Irritating Covid Phrases

GoldenPenPot · 14/02/2021 12:21

Now we’re about a year into the pandemic, we’re in a good position to assess what new phrases and words are the most irritating.

I’ll start with the obvious ones - “Covidiot” and “New Normal”. However, I also hate the “Stay safe” at the end of emails (suspect that’s just me).

Another one i hate is "mitigation measures"

unmumsymummy21 · 15/02/2021 10:13

@OhTheTastyNuts

My MIL is always reminding me to stay safe and keep my DC safe. Like I'm about to send them into ICU to lick door handles or something. Of course I'm keeping them safe!!

She does it in non-COVID times too though, especially if we are driving somewhere! I sometimes tease her by saying that I'm actually planning on driving blindfolded after a bottle pinot noir. Luckily we get on well and she can take a joke!

Hahahah send them to ICU to lick door handles. This is so funny. Also driving blind folded.

The one I hate is the people who watch others walking around on the street and say : ' you would think there is no lock down ' ' look how many people are walking around '. Or when they see people queuing up for something, they get angry at seeing people just out and about. Like how dare they !

This behaviour gets worse as things start opening up- like how dare people go outside now and meet up outside or go for coffees etc. This really really really really winds me up. Just leave people alone.

poppycat10 · 15/02/2021 10:15

I forgot, alongside "selfish" the other word that needs to be banned is "safe".

No such thing as safe. Stay indoors if you want to, but make sure you don't fall down the stairs or scald yourself making a cup of tea.

poppycat10 · 15/02/2021 10:17

I hate "rona" too. Yuck.

And I actually stopped following someone on Strava because every run he did he put "solo, safely distanced" on it as if the coronastasi were checking everyone (and would just take his word for it anyway).

GetOffYourHighHorse · 15/02/2021 10:24

'Civil liberties'

'Dictatorship'

'Curtain twitcher'

'Myob'

'The stasi'

All from flouters, obvs.

sashagabadon · 15/02/2021 10:34

I hate bubble too! And “hunkering down” and stay safe.

AradiaGC · 15/02/2021 10:34

Bubble. It sounds ridiculous, especially talk of people being in each other's bubbles, bubbles big enough to include entire school year groups, and bursting bubbles. Enough.

Jabbed. Odd connotations of childishness and violence. The word vaccination always makes me think of cows, but jab is much worse.

Self-isolation used to describe what is actually quarantine (and the redundant 'self' there as well), but that has been irritating me for the better part of a year and isn't going away.

RedcurrantPuff · 15/02/2021 10:35

“key workers”
“Stay the fuck at home”
“Protect the NHS”
“Shielding”

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 15/02/2021 10:58

The word vaccination always makes me think of cows, but jab is much worse.

Well yes, it comes from the Latin "vacca" which is "cow" 👍🏻

unmumsymummy21 · 15/02/2021 11:34

Priority groups
Joe Wicks
Banana bread
Walk
Protect the NHS- I haven't seen this motto used in other places. Why not just say ' adhere to rules to save your life and others in order not to overwhelm hospitals '
Sticking to the rules ( kind of hypocritical seeing my last point )
Flouting
Bubbles
Essential
Covidiot is probably the worst one by far
Cases
Curve
The R ( said like this )
Restrictions
Travel corridors
Quarantine
Self isolate ( when used in the wrong way )
Socially distanced
Meeting ' outside '
Rule of 6
Households
Mixing
Spread
Variants
Working from home
Testing testing testing
Jabs in arms ( this is horrible )
We are in the midst of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC ( Priti Patel loves this one )

In Scotland we say 'jag'
Iliketeaagain · 15/02/2021 11:51

"Stay safe" has pissed me off since the end of March 2020. I remember I started a thread on it, and the general (small sample) consensus was that people were using it to be nice and it was a nice thing to say.

It generally comes on emails from those who haven't so much as seen a patient, never mind in flimsy PPE, for the whole time. And at the time, we were fighting for PPE, had limited masks and care homes were being forced to take people from hospital with known covid to empty hospital beds.

Now it still pisses me off, because "stay safe" still means a whole load of nothing and is just said by people to make them feel better rather than making any different to those who have to leave the house.

Loungewear

HUCKMUCK · 15/02/2021 12:20

Mine is a work one and it grates on my very last nerve. When on a teams call and someone has still got their virtual hand raised after they've spoken, the chair will say 'Alan, is that a legacy hand?'

What the actual fuck is that all about?! Wankers.

What’s the banana bread one about!?
MrsMauryBallstein · 15/02/2021 12:50

Risk assessment, eg: I'll carry out my own "risk assessment" (no doubt utilising my considerable powers of "critical thinking" Hmm)
Cowering/crack on, eg: You can "cower" at home, the rest of us need to "crack on"
Jabs in arms

I quite like 'Rona - have heard teens talking about Auntie Rona Grin

PracticingPerson · 15/02/2021 13:08

Oh, yes, had forgotten bloody 'crack on' - annoying in all settings really but especially when meaning 'ignore minimal public health requirements'.

Pinkmarsh · 15/02/2021 13:26

I laugh at posts on Facebook when they’re talking about a family walk and they feel the need to point out that they “socially distanced” and stayed local or “permitted walk”..

I never want to hear the words socially distanced again after this!

Also “I’m a front line worker ”. From the receptionist at the doctors surgery 🙄

GoldenOmber · 15/02/2021 13:28

Hahahah send them to ICU to lick door handles. This is so funny.

Playgrounds were closed for a long time okay, don’t judge.

Yes definitely to ‘crack on’!

Dongdingdong · 15/02/2021 13:29

“Lockdown 3 point 0”.

Why do you need the .0?

unmumsymummy21 · 15/02/2021 13:37

@ColdBrightClearMorning I'm not sure. It just annoys me. Oh and everyone became obsessed with sourdough. Hahah

They just want brownie points and enjoy feeling smug. I also think a not insignificant number of people get a bit of a thrill from using the lingo and perceiving themselves to be part of some thrilling exciting novel new experience.

🤣 I used to make banana bread a lot, haven’t made one since the pandemic started though!

MangoButterFingers · 15/02/2021 13:38

@ReachedTheEndofCake

“These unprecedented times”
This.

I am sick of bloody hearing this one...
