Out of curiosity, how many people do you actually know had COVID or sadly died with it?

So in our company of about 1000 employees, 40 people (including their immediate family) have had COVID and recovered.

OP posts:

I had it. Was in hospital with it in October.

About 20+ staff at my school had it around the same time.
I know several parents had it too, plus some of the children, so aged 4-7y.

My nana caught it in hospital in May. My nana died but not of covid.

A distant relative caught it in the care home she works in. Sadly she wasn't very responsible when she had it though and passed it to friends of hers. I only know her case through social media.

I know of some older people who had it via dh's work and MIL's neighbours but don't know them personally.

Mixture of levels of illness. All have recovered on the whole, though some have 'long covid' type issues, myself included.

SilverBirchWithout · 13/02/2021 18:14

3 family members of friends who have died. I acquaintance aged 53, who I know quite well.
Probably about 10+ people who have had it and recovered. 2 people still suffering from long Covid. We live in a fairly rural area with fairly low rates.

DS works in critical care and ICU, he is seeing deaths most days (and stopped counting at around 50) he has had experienced so much now he can barely cope, he’s under 30 years old and feels helpless and angry - he has seen too much.

UnusuallyUsual · 13/02/2021 18:16

I had it mildly
Dad with underlining health condition had it mildly
Brother and sil in law were off work ill for several weeks (as in unable to wfh)
Friend in her 80s with dementia sadly died. I was told she stopped eating and drinking ☹
A few workmates were poorly
This was all in the recent wave, so since before Xmas

rooarsome · 13/02/2021 18:16

Not including patients or colleagues it's 14. Sadly one death

ILookAtTheFloor · 13/02/2021 18:16

I was thinking about this the other day.

This is all family, friends, acquaintances, colleagues- probably in the region of 60. Ages between 4 and 72. Only 2 friends of friends (not people I knew myself) I'm aware of have died, both older with pre existing conditions.

No one I know has long covid.

knittingaddict · 13/02/2021 18:17

Husband's office - was hospitalised Mid March, put on a ventilator and came out of hospitalised 3? months later. He was in his 50's.

Husband's aunt - just been told she has it, but not sure how badly. In hospital though. She was living in a care home and very elderly.

My adult children know numerous people who have had it, but my social circle is tiny.

There is a very real possibility that both my husband, myself and one of our adult children had it back in January/February 2020, but no tests then, so who knows. In January loads of my husband's colleagues had chest infections. My husband had a cough that went on for weeks when he was ill and I almost went to the doctor's with a possible chest infection, but it got better eventually.

Meredithgrey1 · 13/02/2021 18:17

None personally.
A handful of people at work that I don’t know, a teacher my mum works with, a couple of friends of friends. All recovered but I don’t know any well enough to know any details.

Australia77 · 13/02/2021 18:18

About 5 altogether. None seriously ill.

feelingverylazytoday · 13/02/2021 18:18

Only one, my exhusband, who has it at the moment. He only has mild symptoms.
I don't know a lot of people though, and have no elderly relatives.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 13/02/2021 18:19

6 and one died.

Kitewoman · 13/02/2021 18:19

5 family members had it and in my street I know of 8 people who had it. also a couple of friends and colleagues and actually quite s few more in the wider circle of friends. So all together I probably know about 25-30 who had it (and only 3 work on a hospital/care setting)

I don't know anyone personally who passed away but a friend's bother did not make it (healthy and in his 40s) but I know of several people who had friends and neighbours who sadly died.

Iwant2move · 13/02/2021 18:20

None.

borageforager · 13/02/2021 18:21

Only people I know directly are my friend who is a paramedic, & his partner.

Various friends of friends type relations - my best friend’s brother, my husband’s colleagues etc.

InFiveMins · 13/02/2021 18:21

I know of one person - a colleague who works in another office.

She's in her late 50s and recovered after 3 days of feeling a bit shit. Her husband and kids didn't contract it.

Other than her, I know nobody at all.

Pinkmarsh · 13/02/2021 18:22
  1. 5 mild symptoms. 1 hospitalised but not ventilated. 1 who sadly died- she was 69 with chrons x
Delatron · 13/02/2021 18:23

About 10 friends all had it quite mildly and were better within a week or two.
Brother had it and felt a bit fatigued and chesty for 10 days then completely better in Oct. His wife lost her sense of taste and smell in March but no test then and she didn’t get it when he has it.

I don’t know anyone who has died or been seriously ill.

elp30 · 13/02/2021 18:23

Three of my nephews had it and one was hospitalized. All have recovered.

My DH had light symptoms so he recovered.

A cousin unfortunately died from it last week.

sylbunny · 13/02/2021 18:25

A lot. Probably around 30 or 40 which includes me!

iolaus · 13/02/2021 18:27

Friends and colleagues - about 30-40 (most mild cases, 1 death) - do work in NHS so may be skewed

Family wise cousin died in first wave, aunt is currently in hospital with it but seems to be improving touch wood

Daughter's friend, a few of DH's friends (they are al fine but one of them lost both his sisters)

A friend (who did have it herself but is fine) lost both her grandmother and uncle - several other family members did have it but recovered (I think most of them caught it when seeing the dying grandmother)

nimbuscloud · 13/02/2021 18:28

Currently know a 21 year old on a ventilator- critically ill. No underlying health issues.
Otherwise I know maybe 8 who have had it and fully recovered.

Namechangegame123 · 13/02/2021 18:29

My brother, 20 - mild.

My friends son, 6 - mild.

My friends sister, 35 - hospitalised but recovered. No underlying health conditions but was obese.

My uncle, 60s - mild.

My friends husband, 38 - mild.

Eaumyword · 13/02/2021 18:30

Nobody until October. Then a spate of cases at the school I work at (a couple of asymptomatic pupils and then their families being infected.)
I now know of about 30 people across friendship groups/in the village who have been infected to varying levels of illness.
One elderly gentleman and one woman in her 30's who have sadly died from it.

megletthesecond · 13/02/2021 18:30

3 are school staff, 2 are NHS.

ReginaPhalangee · 13/02/2021 18:30

Around 40. 4 sadly died, all of whom were elderly with underlying conditions. Others ranging from simply a loss of smell to being hospitalised on oxygen and steroids. Currently waiting on a test result myself.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 13/02/2021 18:31

My niece had it mildly at university last autumn, that’s it.
