How many people do you actually know had COVID?

Out of curiosity, how many people do you actually know had COVID or sadly died with it?

So in our company of about 1000 employees, 40 people (including their immediate family) have had COVID and recovered.

OP posts:

I think at its highest rate of transmission, it was reported as being 1 in 50 people infected. Yet the official number of people testing positive is around 4 million. Out of a population of 65-70 million. Which equates to one in every 17 people.

The only people who don’t know anyone who has had covid are probably the same people who deny it even exists. “Oh they just had the flu”

Someone I know is a covid denier. She said to her own mother (who is in her 80s), that if she (her mother) gets the vaccine then she won’t ever speak to her mother again.

To answer the OP’s question, I have known numerous people who have had covid. One of them described it as being an “onslaught”. Another ended up in hospital. Another is still struggling despite getting over it before Christmas. Another said it was nothing. Another died.

I haven’t had it yet (or if I have I’m asymptomatic). What scares me about covid is, should I catch it, I have absolutely no idea which category (from those listed above) I’ll fall into.

I'm a HCP our trust has tragically lost 2 members of staff. Outside of work I personally only know of 1 person who's tested positive, I do know of a couple of people at the beginning who had symptoms and who now have anti bodies thus had it but no tests were available. I also know of another 10ish friends/relatives of friends who've over the last year have tested positive including a couple of elderly (80+) with very significant underlying health conditions diabetes hypertension coronary heart disease asthma etc who haven't even required hospitalisation.
Apart from the two staff mentioned above I know of no one who's required hospitalisation.

LimitIsUp · 13/02/2021 20:29

So sorry to hear about the impact on your dd Bonnevacances

Tellto · 13/02/2021 20:32

know personally well as in close family/friends about 20 and know of (through work) another 75.

3 deaths
4 with life changing consequences following icu stays.

and its about 50/50 with the rest as to whether they have ongoing long covid issues or have recovered.

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 13/02/2021 20:36

Or they just don't know anyone? I don't know a single person who has tested positive. I actually hardly know anyone who has had a test. None of my large family, friends or colleagues, or certainly that they've told me about.

I know of a few people but they are people like my mum's client, or DHs colleague's mum. That sort of thing - so I don't actually know them.

delilahbucket · 13/02/2021 20:37

Lost count of how many people, but most very mild or no symptoms. Only two very poorly people, one who spent three days in hospital and one who was close to hospitalisation. The latter lived with her 93 year old mum who didn't get it or was asymptomatic (it was before widespread testing was available).

PracticingPerson · 13/02/2021 20:38

A lot at work, so over 20.

flippertygibbit · 13/02/2021 20:41

Central Scotland here - personally I know no one who has had it far less died of it. I know of 4 people indirectly (ie relations of friends). My area is also the highest numbers of positive tests in our NHS area.. I guess I'm lucky!

Dotinthecity · 13/02/2021 20:41

I know one person who’s had it. I’m not a Covid denier/anti vaxxer. I’m just being honest.

Tangledtresses · 13/02/2021 20:43

Only 3 people.... all mild

Trumplosttheelection · 13/02/2021 20:45

So so many but I'm nhs so expected I guess.

Xmasbaby11 · 13/02/2021 20:47

Loads, at least 20, but I know a lot of people.

walksen · 13/02/2021 20:47

At work about 40.

Outside of work 2.

ripples101 · 13/02/2021 20:50

@StopTouchingYourFairyGarden

Ok, you don’t “know” them, but you do know “of” people who have had it.

If you know anyone who has had covid (regardless of how close or distant they are to you), then you are not the kind of person I was referring to in my post.

You don’t sound like the kind of person who is denying that covid even exists for example...

HarrysWife · 13/02/2021 20:51

Directly I know 2 people, a couple. Both 40s with slight health conditions. Both had a rough 3 weeks but now are ok.

Indirectly I know a courier/driver for my office died from it (overweight single man in 50s), a friends brother is currently in ICU with it (single man in 60s) and the girlfriend of a young man at work (20, mums a nurse) who was sick for a few weeks with no typical covid signs (V&D with stomach pains) but is fine now.

Porcupineintherough · 13/02/2021 20:52

I know of around 30 who've had it. And 3 who have died.

starfish4 · 13/02/2021 20:52

Ten.

One lost his life to it, one has long Covid. Others caught it more recently, one just home after five weeks in hospital/rehabilitation, one needs an x-ray as ongoing chest pain, one struggled with his asthma, three said it felt like an awful cold, two mild.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/02/2021 20:56

3 of them died.Sad

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 13/02/2021 20:57

No, I'm definitely not denying it exists - I work for the NHS and have been heavily involved in the response at times (behind the scenes, not front line).

It is, however, quite a remote thing for me. I don't live in a heavily populated area, I don't know many people in high risk occupations and the doctors and teachers I do know haven't had it.

There isn't an even spread across the population, meaning there are people out there like me, who just don't really know anyone who has had it. My DH's colleague's mum, who lives 600 miles from us, and I've never met the colleague never mind his mum, I don't count as 'knowing'.

I do agree that covid-deniers are the absolute pits though.

unbotheredbutbewildered · 13/02/2021 21:09

Only one who is 70 and recovered fine (has COPD).

Don't know anyone else who has actually...

Very weird.

Fireflylane · 13/02/2021 21:10

9 all recovered including 1 with terminal cancer who had it twice with other strain

imnottoofussed · 13/02/2021 21:13

2 of my immediate family same household had it but didn't need hospital, the other two of us in our household don't know if we also had it because we didn't have symptoms so no test allowed.

1 friend of a friend had to go to hospital for oxygen

Several family members of a friend had it with mild or no symptoms. They only knew they had it because of the Liverpool testing.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/02/2021 21:14

That must be so shit @BonnesVacances.SadFlowers

WomanInYellow · 13/02/2021 21:17

Around 8 people I know well actually tested positive.

I of those was hospitalised via ambulance and on a ventilator. Aged 25 and one of the fittest in that group of 8! The rest were very mildly affected.

DirtyDancing · 13/02/2021 21:17

Gosh loads now..
3 people at work + their families (about 9 in total)
16+ families & teachers at the school (guessing at least 36-50 some unknown)
Local families / households / friends about 14 total
So I guess 60 ish in total that I personally know, have spoken to.

This is all from the most recent ‘second wave’ I knew very few in wave 1.
