How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

3, DH and his 2 colleagues.

ParkingProblemo · 14/02/2021 22:27

No one. Most people I know are in the public sector though.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/02/2021 22:59

None although have lost some self employed income as SEISS let me down

AudacityOfHope · 14/02/2021 23:14

About 100 - a fifth of the company, including me

DawnAnn · 14/02/2021 23:21

I personally don't know anyone who has lost their job since Covid.

RedRidingH00d · 15/02/2021 00:03

None. None of my close family/friends group are furloughed either. Most are working from home.

I personally have applied for so many jobs and I am lucky if I get a reply. My husband the same. We are on Universal Credit and I can’t remember the last time they called to check that we were seeking work

HerRoyalNotness · 15/02/2021 00:36

Only me. And a friends husband had to take a 20% paycut. Same hours, same bills, less money.

HerRoyalNotness · 15/02/2021 00:38

Sorry no. And our neighbour and her husband. They worked for the same company. He found something after 4 mths and she got a contract position at her old company after about 9mths. This pisses me off. Let’s get rid of loads of staff, but oh whoops we actually need them so let’s waste money on rehire costs

Porcupineintherough · 15/02/2021 15:59

Just thought of another one - my neighbour who worked for the National Trust. They've lost a lot of staff, almost all the new recruits where I work are ex NT .

fortyfifty · 15/02/2021 16:11

1 person made redundant last November. He is employed again - in a different job role. He's fortunately been able to take it as an opportunity to reassess his life. Lots of friends of my 18 year old daughter have lost their part-time student jobs.

worlybear · 16/02/2021 04:25

82 including me.
Worked at a very established language school.
No international students therefore no work.
I doubt it will ever reopen.
Also a knock on effect to other businesses in the town e.g. fast food, entertainment , coach hire and tourism.
Not just seasonal either as school was open 11 months of the year.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/02/2021 04:50

My eldest lost her job when they closed the charity shop. Luckly she started a new job in January.

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 16/02/2021 04:56

None that I know of...all "professional" jobs, and my work has been fine. Feeling very grateful.

Woebegonad · 16/02/2021 05:15

None, and none furloughed either.

Camomila · 16/02/2021 08:49

2, DHs friend who works in events (but luckily got a new job straightaway) and mums neighbour who worked in the same place for 25 years, he's in his mid 50s so I hope he can find something else.

Oldsu · 16/02/2021 08:52

Only my Nephew who is a chef and he went out next day to get agency work cleaning hospitals

Shehz21 · 16/02/2021 09:29

6 in total.
4 are neighbours and 2 are DHs childhood friend.
Dh lost his job back in March but thankfully got another one by May and a better paid one.
Many others have not been this lucky unfortunately.
I know few whose jobs are currently holding by a string (events).

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 16/02/2021 09:46

Dozens. I used to work for a retailer that's just gone bust....lots of ex colleagues now out of work.

noblegreenk · 16/02/2021 09:51

Just my husband got made redundant twice. First from a job had been in 2 years, he then got a new job, they put him on furlough for a month and then he got made redundant again.

My workplace has made a lot people redundant too. Around 50.

KevinSausage · 16/02/2021 09:53

Personally I know 3 but all are back in work now . Professionally a handful more but from what I understand are mostly in new jobs

CKBJ · 16/02/2021 09:54

None thankfully.

Kljnmw3459 · 16/02/2021 09:56

I only know 1. But couple more people with reduced salaries. Quite a few people with their own business that is functioning but in a limited basis. Majority haven't been affected in terms of job losses.

onlychildandhamster · 16/02/2021 09:58

only 1 with loss of income. my SIL who is a musician. But she wasn't earning much before the pandemic either. She is teaching online instead of in person. i think my MIL had loss of income at the start of the pandemic but things have picked up since then. Everyone else I know is salaried and wfh.

I think you are more likely to be affected if you are self employed even if you don't work for hospitality.

Sweetener12 · 16/02/2021 10:01

I know several people who used to work as djs before the pandemic and lost their jobs, and also there is a friend of mine who was a full-time photographer. He started online photography school during the lockdown, but his own photography had to stop. He doesn't seem upset about that, though, he says teaching people how to use brushes and tools in Photoworks is much more interesting than he thought it would be.
