How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

grassisjeweled · 13/02/2021 16:44

We lost all our interns.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/02/2021 16:45

None.

One of my friends lost a high level job. She was earning 6 figures and now she’s applying for minimum wage jobs.

None, all WFH

Mintjulia · 13/02/2021 16:50

I know two, me and a friend.

I've just got a new job. Friend hasn't yet.

ZenNudist · 13/02/2021 16:54

Personally, only 1, my next door neighbour.

A school mum found a new job because her place messed her around over furlough making them work in furlough and telling her she was going to take a pay cut.

Dh has laid off a few people but fortunately others saw the writing on the wall and quit.

My dad's friends fishing business is closing but that's Brexit related.

Another school mum quit 1 out of 2 of her jobs because she wasn't allowed to WFH and her dc are off school.

So far we have been lucky I guess

I personally know around 15. We are in the oil and gas capital of UK and they are well known of getting rid of everyond when times are tough. Thankfully its all who you know and most people will be brought back in on short contracts when projects start again but on much worse terms. Also most people in that industry are fed up of being up for redundancy every single year. My husband left for council..much less money but no regrets on how safe and flexible it is at the moment.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/02/2021 16:56

Hundreds. I work in the travel industry and its on its knees. Not only have they been closed with barely any income for a year, they've refunded much of what they made in 2019 and there's no end in sight. Even if people book for next year it won't help much as many more will go under before balances are due. Holidays are about to become very expensive as demand will massively outstrip supply at the end of this.

I don't think the saying ' They will never work again ' is true. They can't have a large section of the population all on UC

My husband is 65 this year and I am over 55. I can’t see either of us ever working again.
My adult children were both in the type of hospitality that will be the last thing to reopen. They also were in another industry that has suffered greatly as well as doing days here and there in jobs that are related to the above industries.
We might as a family have not lost everything but we have lost more than we will end up with. So much so that it has been a question playing on my mind that is it worth trying anymore as we have worked so hard for years doing 12-16 hour days when needed and if we had taken minimum wage jobs and left at 5pm on the dot we would be in a better position than we are now.
It is really depressing.

rosetylersbiggun · 13/02/2021 17:01

Basically almost everyone in my industry.

Dartsplayer · 13/02/2021 17:03

My DH twice

MiaMarshmallows · 13/02/2021 17:14

Maybe for older people it may be harder to find a job but for young people, it seems crazy to suggest they will never work again. With that said, one of my relatives is in her thirties, made redundant , chronic health issues and says she doubts she will ever work again which I have told her is ridiculous.

caringcarer · 13/02/2021 17:14

1, my dd she lost job at end of October after being furloughed from end of March. She got another job starting beginning of January though.

None, fortunately, although a few people we know who run their own businesses are struggling.

icegarden · 13/02/2021 23:00

I know a couple. In the types of industries above where it's common. I also know quite a few people still enjoying furlough. And I mean enjoy.
Educating kids at home but otherwise just riding it out and saving cash just in case. Some on max amount.

My brother who works on live events. His income literally went overnight with idea when it will be back. Also Brexit not helping with that. Another friend who is a make up artist in the fashion industry. Again no work since last February. Devastating for both of them.

thenightsky · 13/02/2021 23:07

Far, far more than have been ill or died with covid for sure.

0gfhty · 13/02/2021 23:26

Personally around 11 although 2 stories were a bit vague, I'm not sure if it was redundancy or personal circumstances. Thousands of job losses on my company staff Facebook group. Quite a lot of stories of job losses in my social circle and people going out of business locally. Some people I know are in dire situations financially. Also a few younger people I know are sofa surfing permanently now after their job loss. I think it's a lot worse than what I read in the media

FredaFox · 13/02/2021 23:29

Friends and family is none
At work we made 100+ redundant/ probation ended early

Bingowin · 14/02/2021 01:30

My DP lost his job in October and I’ve had an 11% pay cut.

Quite a few including DP

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 14/02/2021 06:30

Nobody yet thank goodness

Some furloughed people that could still end up unemployed if we stay closed much longer though
