How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

Tuchel127 · 13/02/2021 12:03

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

My husband is self employed so not a job loss exactly but basically zero work.

Jenasaurus · 14/02/2021 06:45

I know 2 pilots who are on furlough but look increasingly likely to lose their jobs sadly. Living near Gatwick, I know a lot of airline staff that havr also lost their jobs, but have managed to find other jobs not travel related.

countrygirl99 · 14/02/2021 06:47

More than I know who have had covid

WanderingFruitWonderer · 14/02/2021 06:54

Sadly loads. My background is in the arts, and apart from travel & tourism, it's possibly the most affected industry Sad

WanderingFruitWonderer · 14/02/2021 06:58

But I was still in favour of this third lockdown, as I didn't see an alternative. There are no easy answers unfortunately...

ItsSnowJokes · 14/02/2021 06:59

14 of us were made redundant in January at work. 20% of the employees. I know numerous other friends and acquaintances (circa about 18) that have also been made redundant. It sucks. The worst thing I have ever been through professionally. I have been offered another job now, not my dream job by any means, and less hours than I wanted but here there is just not many jobs coming on the job market and I have a mortgage and bills to pay!

AMSAIM · 14/02/2021 07:08

None professionally. Thankfully my organisation didnt even need to enter into the govt. Furlough scheme and everyone has worked throughtout

DH work quite a few had to reapply for their jobs (sales) 2 people i know through him were made redundant

Personally i know of one mum who quit to focus on homeschooling 3 kids walking away from a great job and 1 very close friend who has worked years to build her beauty buisness is now doing delivery driving

ammary · 14/02/2021 07:15

Literally not one.

Everyone I know works for local authority, school or is a key worker except for DH but he's busier than ever.

Parky04 · 14/02/2021 07:24

16 in the company I work for, including me. Know plenty on furlough and would expect more job losses when furlough ends. It is thoroughly depressing.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/02/2021 07:24

Only people who worked for travel companies 🙁

MiaMarshmallows · 14/02/2021 07:56

Very surprised at the people who know nobody who has been made unemployed.

BobsDouble · 14/02/2021 08:06

Only one so far, working in IT for a very large global company.

Knows lots on furlough in the hospitality and aviation sectors. Whether their jobs will remain at the end is unknown.

Stokey · 14/02/2021 08:09

Around 10 who have been made redundant across various industries. Many more freelancers who haven't had any or barely any work for months, mainly in theatre, film & TV, & music.

feelingverylazytoday · 14/02/2021 08:12

No one. My son is a graduate and has been unable to find a job though. I'm getting worried about him now.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 14/02/2021 08:12

Nobody, not one person.

MargosKaftan · 14/02/2021 08:13

We have been lucky. We know people who have their own businesses holding on by the skin of their teeth, but not gone under yet.

Our fear is how well paid DH is for a role that has been proved to be perfectly doable remotely. Why are they paying UK wages if someone can do that role from anywhere in the world? He thinks he'll be ok for the next 5 or so years while a project continues, but anyone who leaves will be replaced remotely from overseas.

I'm fascinated by those saying they'll leave the NHS, what are they going to do instead? If the rest of the economy is shit, will there be lots of demand for private health care?

I see a lot of people trying to retain as teachers or those who went private trying to get back into secure work.

Oblomov21 · 14/02/2021 08:19
  1. All work for Airlines ie BA (2) , Virgin (1).
Bythemillpond · 14/02/2021 09:02

I think it depends where you live and what you do.
We know loads because we are in London and know a lot of people in hospitality (the big events type) and Tv/film/theatre etc and those areas have been devastated by this virus

I only know one person who works for local government who has kept working and one couple who own a chemist otherwise everyone is struggling and having to make difficult decisions

emmathedilemma · 14/02/2021 09:38

Two - our office receptionist got made redundant as the office has been closed. Elsewhere in the business we're recruiting though. Other friend worked in events at a venue which has also remained closed for months.
Don't know of anyone else but most of my friends work in the sort of roles that can be done from home or teaching / medical profession type jobs.

AllMyPrettyOnes · 14/02/2021 09:41

Err, none really.

My FIL was made redundant in December. He always knew he was going to be made redundant though, however, COVID did push the date forward by a few months.

I'm very thankful though that my DM and DP's jobs are very secure.

User7458 · 14/02/2021 09:42

1 NDN one side and 1 NDN the other side, they are both near retirement age though and have pensions they can access so will be retiring slightly early rather trying to get new jobs

Pyewhacket · 14/02/2021 09:47

My neighbour was a 747 pilot for 20 years with BA. His redundancy just about cleared their mortgage. He’s now working in B&Q.

Lemonsyellow · 14/02/2021 09:49

Loads. I know lots who work in the performing arts - musicians, dancers etc. Also those who work in bars and clubs, senior managers, not just those on the floor.

tootsytoo · 14/02/2021 16:45

A friend of mine who's a DJ, can't see them getting back into work for a very long time and also a sound engineer used to work on concerts and live events. Apart from that most of my friends and family are in sectors like nhs or local government so no impact in terms of job losses

Iootraw1 · 14/02/2021 16:49

No one
