How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

Tuchel127 · 13/02/2021 12:03

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

@LemonSherbetFancies

I do wonder what will happen. If hundreds are all going for one job, how are we all meant to find anything?
Most people looking won’t find a job. Unemployment is predicted to hit 15% my friend at the Bank of England tells me.

Add in increasing automation and the outsourcing of jobs overseas and I imagine that unemployment will hit 25% in the next decade. Then the government replaces benefits with universal basic income.

LemonSherbetFancies · 13/02/2021 13:29

So loads of people will just be on some form of UC?
Terrifying isn't it and ever so depressing.

biibbiibobby · 13/02/2021 13:35

One but then they got a new job so...none.

Some people will never work again, especially the over 50s.

The public sector can pay very well if your qualified , but in order to pay these wages you need a strong and open economy selling things and making profits. If the smaller businesses do go under , will the public sector workers still keep their jobs? Some Head teachers must be earning close to six figures ( for example) Their job is safe , but someone has to pay this salary and the pensions etc. i did read that council taxes are going to soar in April.
You need a strong economy to fund the NHS and schools and other public services, this is what worries me the most as well.
It is carnage of you start thinking about it too much :(

Bargebill19 · 13/02/2021 13:40

One person - and that’s a friend of a friend.
Everyone I know personally are either, working or on full pay furlough and moaning.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2021 13:46

NDN worked in tourism, another had a small music café - the livelyhood for himself, wife and toddler.
One sadly hanged himself after his life work was destroyed. He could not see his way to start again - too old.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2021 13:50

It this was a daily mail piece, I would be reading comments about the ' new world order' or ' the great reset' which probably isn't as mad it may look on paper given how many more people will be having to survive on UC who may have thought they never ever would do. Would the government bring in basic universal credits? It was carried out in one country once I believe but can't recall where? Not sure if it worked or not.
Some business owners may have saved for all possibilities in life, but many probably haven't or couldn't :(

JaninaDuszejko · 13/02/2021 13:55

In my personal life I know one, they work in the theatre. Most people I know are key workers so their jobs are secure.

I work in the Pharma Industry so professionally it's been a boom time, we are very busy. We have recruited thousands of people worldwide and are working on multiple Covid-19 projects.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/02/2021 13:58

About three dozen on a purely personal basis, but thousands professionally

As PPs have said, it's not entirely about numbers but also who these people are - especially the many who'll probably never work again, and will be in no position to pay the taxes needed

Abraxan · 13/02/2021 14:02

Fortunately I don't know any.

My family and friends are all working in areas which haven't seen a drop in work. A couple were furloughed initially as their work l,aces didn't sort wfh out, but both were back working normal hours, but from home, once the employers sorted wfh out so they could work. Workload was there.

I teach so obviously no issue regarding drop in work there, and dh is a solicitor - his area of law, which also includes wills and probate, has been busy throughout.

Mamapep · 13/02/2021 14:10

One that works in hospitality.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 13/02/2021 14:11

My DH. He was the main earner too.
Fortunately he got another job after about 5 months of applying for anything.
He is utterly miserable doing what he is doing and he is on about 40% less. But it is a job and such a huge relief when he actually got a job.
My job is safe as I'm a radiographer in the NHS.

Most of my friends are also mainly healthcare/teachers/police so they're safe too.
Parents my dad is public service and mum had to isolate due to being CEV but her job is safe.

DollyParton2 · 13/02/2021 14:13

3 that are very close friends/ family, more in friends of friends.

Sinuhe · 13/02/2021 14:36

16 my whole department (they kept 6 on...) charity
+12 DH work place... including DH - entertainment industry so just no need for people

  • 5 from friends and family...

= 33 just like that.

Leodot · 13/02/2021 14:36

Thankfully no one. I feel really sad and worried for all the people that have. A lot of my friends work in the public sector though and their jobs are safe as they are essential, so NHS, police, education, armed forces etc. I also work in education so my job is safe. I’ll be curious to see if there are mass resignations or anything from certain professions when things start to improve eg: if NHS staff will leave because they are exhausted and need a break. I really hope not but it would sadly be understandable.

PotteringAlong · 13/02/2021 14:37

No one. Lots of people who have been furloughed though.

Frazzled2207 · 13/02/2021 14:40

I run a business and I've lost the vast majority of my work .Pressing on for now but likely to give up later this year unless there is a very dramatic recovery which I doubt. I run a kids activity business and I know dozens of people in the same situation - all of us have faced a massive drop in income and many have now given up on it. I've had a bit of grant from the government ,some have done much better in that respect, others have got naff all.

Husband did sort of - took voluntary redundancy except it wasn't very voluntary because they were getting rid of 70% of the team. So his choice was to leave with a package (which is what he's doing) or stick around, hope for the best and potentially get made redundant with no package.

Cornettoninja · 13/02/2021 14:41

I don’t know anyone who has lost a job this past year but I’m very aware how this will likely change over the coming months and there are a number of shops by me that have clearly pulled the plug and won’t be reopening.

I do know one musician who has actually managed to increase his income through virtual lessons but I suspect that he’s the exception to the rule. Plus his income wasn’t particularly stable or high before covid.

Beaniecats · 13/02/2021 14:43

80 in my company
I was at risk but thankfully kept my role

Pumpkinstace · 13/02/2021 14:45

My dad took an early retirement deal.

He was due retire in approx 12 months.

Works in the airline industry.

He's one of hundreds, some too young for retirement and made redundant instead.

Lazypuppy · 13/02/2021 14:47

Bythemillpond · 13/02/2021 14:48

Family of 4
All 4 of us (we have a small extended family and not one of them is now in work) plus loads of others and many more who are in business who have been trying to keep going but are giving up each week or will be throwing in the towel if things don’t improve.
I look at the high street and all I see are shops that have gone, never to return and places we used to go to that we won’t be going to ever again.
It is so depressing

MiaMarshmallows · 13/02/2021 14:53

I don't think the saying ' They will never work again ' is true. They can't have a large section of the population all on UC Hmm

MapleMay11 · 13/02/2021 14:53

None
