How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

I know two men who have had to take pay cuts or reduce their hours. I know one woman who has had to take unpaid leave from a very decent career job to homeschool but I don’t know anyone who has lost their job.

Beforethetakingoftoastandtea · 13/02/2021 12:26

None.

Twickerhun · 13/02/2021 12:26

rawalpindithelabrador · 13/02/2021 12:28

Our friends lost their business - a gym which they’d given their heart and soul for years to get going and was finally succeeding. Devastating the amount of hours they put in with small children thinking it would all pay off - and it should have.

However my business - a gift website has absolutely exploded beyond all belief. Presumably everyone needing to buy gifts online and not able to use the high street.

There have been winners and losers and it’s utterly unfair. However when we are able to we will be spend spend spending and hopefully many of the struggling industries will benefit from those of us who are doing ok being desperate to spend money on leisure and niceties.

Few people who have lost jobs. A lot who have lost large proportion of their work.

farwin · 13/02/2021 12:34

5 parents in my DS group of friends have lost their jobs. All in graduate level professional jobs. One family have been forced to sell their home and are relocating to another part of the country as can no longer afford to live in London. One single parent has moved overseas for lockdown as couldn't afford rent. They are hoping to come back once schools return.

Myself
Daughter in her 20s
Niece in her 30s
Several friends

Awful. Really worrying times.

Emeraldshamrock · 13/02/2021 12:35

Me and all my colleagues.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/02/2021 12:38

Most of my business contacts, all self employed, are hanging on in there. But us self employed are finding other ways to earn if our 1 man bands can't earn.

DHs parent company has let a lot go, he's waiting to see what happens to his bit.

One large client must be struggling as they have made some very odd decisions that don't bode well for the long haul.

Basically we're all just waiting...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/02/2021 12:40

No one. Pretty much all of my family apart from me work in public sector jobs - 2 NHS, one in the armed forces, one teaching assistant, one outreach worker. So their jobs are secure. Another family member is a supermarket manager so also pretty secure. Amongst my friends there is another NHS, another teacher, and a solicitor so again fairly secure.

I work in furniture manufacturing. At the moment business is booming, due to the fact that no one can go on holiday so everyone is doing home improvements instead. So my job is secure for now but that could change at any point.

I feel lucky right now.

Quite a few, a number of friends work in the music industry and some in TV/film production.

One of our neighbours opened a gym in December 19, he has lost his business and he had to sell his home and move in with family.

MarcelineMissouri · 13/02/2021 12:45

Loads because my husband works in the cinema industry. We are lucky in that he has not yet lost his job but he had a pay cut months ago that will go on for the foreseeable and of course no guarantee that his company will make it through.

It is all unbelievably shit.

Devlesko · 13/02/2021 12:46

Me, I lost my business in entertainment.
Dh lost a lot of business but has been able to diversify.
Lots of musician colleagues are working in supermarkets, care homes, and delivering.

Kazzyhoward · 13/02/2021 12:47

About 20-30 of my small business/self employed clients have had to cease trading, some are unemployed, others have got driving/supermarket jobs. I'm sure some will try to return to self employment, but quite a few have lost too much (had to sell equipment, give up premises leases etc), so won't be able to start again. Heartbreaking how so many people havn't been supported through covid. Rishi needs to be taken to account for his scattergun approach to support/grants etc.

Redhead95 · 13/02/2021 12:51

My husband lost his job due to covid and know of 10 others that have sadly (we live south west)

gegs73 · 13/02/2021 12:52

I’ve lost a lot of work (self employed). I’m probably earning a quarter of what I did pre covid, my job depends on people being able to travel. DBil has being made redundant and found new jobs 4 times since March in the car industry. His new job is now NHS related so probably secure but not far off minimum wage. My other DBil has been furloughed since March, worked probably 3 weeks since then and been made part-time for if he ever does return, travel industry.

Smileyoriley · 13/02/2021 12:52

Three including my DH! They have all managed to find other jobs but one had to take a massive pay cut (not DH thankfully!)
I also think employers are taking the chance to look at the bigger picture too. Lots of changes to roles, working practices etc.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/02/2021 12:54

458...that's how many were working in the factory when we were all made redundant.

Donoteatthekittens · 13/02/2021 13:01

It’s an awful time to be job hunting. I recruited for an admin officer recently, £20k. A couple of years ago, I might have got 20-30 applicants. This time I got over 500! Some very qualified people applying. Teachers, HR officers, PAs, project managers, self employed etc who had previously earned more money.

We have just had a huge re-org at work (civil service) but so far it seems everyone has been redeployed to new roles. There are loads of internal jobs going across the wider civil service too. The issue is that we will only be advertising jobs externally once nobody internally have accepted them. External recruitment is very limited so far fewer jobs for the millions of unemployed to apply for. Sad

DuchessofHastings1 · 13/02/2021 13:10

One has been made redundant after 13 years.

One is self employed beautician and has no income.
One is self employed labourer.
I have had my hours cut due to lack of custom. Less people out etc.

Then people from work, they have told me about their friends and family losing jobs.

LemonSherbetFancies · 13/02/2021 13:11

I do wonder what will happen. If hundreds are all going for one job, how are we all meant to find anything?

TimeToCloseTheDoor · 13/02/2021 13:17

Me and another 200 colleagues across the company as a whole.

Completely depressing and the fist time I’ve been unemployed. I’ve applied and heard nothing back from 100’s of job applications over the last couple of months
