How many people do you know that have lost their jobs since COVID?

Tuchel127 · 13/02/2021 12:03

For me it is about 5-6 people. And many others who have seen a huge loss of income so they are on the bring of losing their business.

To think we could see a lot of restaurants , pubs, hairdressers and other businesses not reopen due to lack of funding.

Has COVID impacted your job?

One of my friends lost a high level job. She was earning 6 figures and now she’s applying for minimum wage jobs.

Why is she applying for minimum wage jobs? If she was earning 6 figures she must have transferable skills surely?

My husband is 65 this year and I am over 55. I can’t see either of us ever working again

Obviously it depends on what you do, but I’m in my early 60s and I’ve found a new job after being made redundant during the pandemic. I did encounter some fairly blatant discrimination but not from any organisation I’d really want to work for.

MiaMarshmallows · 14/02/2021 17:40

This is all very doom and gloom really. People saying they don't expect to work again.
Lockdown is said to be eased completely by May, plenty more businesses can open and a lot more can then get back into employment.

Ok so thousands of people fighting for limited opportunities With so many businesses going to the wall where are these jobs exactly? I really wish people would get realistic

We made 1/3 of our staff redundant (part of our work was in supply chain for cruise ship tourism). I professionally know a lot in travel and catering industry who have been on furlough for coming a year, and just waiting.

In my wider family, two others (oil & gas).

User594022452 · 14/02/2021 17:53

None

DavidsSchitt · 14/02/2021 18:06

2 but one got a different job 3 weeks later and the other thinks he's above most jobs so doesn't bother applying for them.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/02/2021 18:13

Me. Head office retail - we went into administration the month before lockdown and then lost our buyer on 18th March due to Covid uncertainty. I actually can't believe that's almost a year ago. I have a new job but I took a paycut.

One of my friends lost hers at Christmas. She worked in for an association in charge of events in a summer sport.

mum2jakie · 14/02/2021 18:28

None. I don't know anyone has been furloughed either. Majority of friends and associates are public sector or self employed in the construction industry. I know a taxi driver who has diversified into delivery work. A public sector worker who was redeployed to a different role and now their original role has gone.

Hexinthecity · 14/02/2021 18:31

I work in theatre, put industry has been decimated, I’ve had to move into a totally different arena and have been lucky to have that open to me, many of my colleagues are fucked. Incidentally as a freelancer I got zero financial support due the the 5050 paye rule for self employment grants so have been screwed over massively, no furlough, no grants and no work...

MaverickDanger · 14/02/2021 18:36

Personally, 1 but her company were looking to get rid anyway.

Professionally, we offered voluntary redundancy to 10 people out of a workforce of 5000+. My team worked 60 hour weeks all last year to ensure as many jobs were saved - we have been told by the business that we saved 580 jobs.

Ironically most of these people (who were on furlough for most of the year) will still get a higher bonus than me.

AIMummy · 14/02/2021 18:39

None.

Hophop26 · 14/02/2021 18:39

Within friends/family none, and actually quite a few have gone the other way and in a better position with work, hours, salary etc than there were last year, across several industries.

Professionally, small redundancy process early summer last year, very much a deadwood exercise only so would have happened sooner or later but do feel for those that went.

I suspect it depends very much what people in your immediate circle do and sector you work in etc

stopgap · 14/02/2021 18:57

Three who were employed by companies, plus two people I know have lost their businesses.

The 50:50 rule is insane - there's so much wrong with it. Whichever fool thought it was a good idea needs their P45.
Dobedohdahdee · 14/02/2021 19:49

None due directly to COVID

EachBleachBlairTrump · 14/02/2021 19:52

My mum and my cousin, but I work in the public sector in an area we are increasing recruitment and I live in a town where the biggest employer is the NHS, so my experience is very skewed. I do know a number of people who have lost their lives though, including colleagues and friends of my parents (sixties not old) 11.

Chimeraforce · 14/02/2021 19:54

1 so far but I don't know many people

EachBleachBlairTrump · 14/02/2021 19:54

DM just found out she has a new job with DWP at the job centre ironically, very different to what she was doing before but she wants the change and to try and help others back into employment.

Anawi · 14/02/2021 19:55

None luckily, but thinking about it I think I know an unusually high proportion of public sector workers, so that will be a big factor. I am worried about what the next few months are going to bring jobs wise for a lot more people though. Sad

Jijithecat · 14/02/2021 20:00

Two friends, one in IT, one in finance.
The company DH works for has just entered their third round of redundancies since Lockdown.
My hairdresser is self employed and is feeling pretty desperate now too.

Sleeplessinsaltend · 14/02/2021 21:15

I’ve made two people redundant in my team, the company has made another 15. Sil works in theatre so she lost her job, friends in charity sector have lost jobs. Thankful every day we are still working. I hope that the ecvonimy bounces back quickly, I’m frightened how many businesses in this area have closed down.

Theluggage15 · 14/02/2021 21:23

I know three people. Two of them were husband and wife but husband has got new job recently thank goodness.

Theluggage15 · 14/02/2021 21:26

My daughter got a new job a month ago ( not made redundant just changed jobs), last week she said her old firm had announced a second wave of redundancies. First wave was December.

mopphead · 14/02/2021 21:35

7 in immediate circle.

2kool4skool · 14/02/2021 22:02

Not a single one. Not heard of a single one either
