A continuation of the thread for those of us taking part in the Vaccine trial.
Never had a thread continue to part 2 before so quite excited.

ah right I see what you're saying. It might be coincidence but when I've been before there have been lots of older folk and this was not the case on Thursday. Assume that many people who would have been eligible for the vaccine in recent weeks/months would have been unblinded for obvious reasons and don't blame them.

andadietcoke · 02/04/2021 23:38

Yes @Frazzled2207 I noticed this too. Although there's a couple that I seem to see every time I go and they've clearly opted to stay in the trial which is lovely. I'd say they're in their 70s so would almost certainly have been offered a vaccine. Ironically they'll have their two doses before my parents will have done on the NHS programme though so it was probably a good call.

JPLeeds · 03/04/2021 22:05

Got my vaccine letter in the post today, I had emailed them but they hadn't replied so was a nice surprise.

Is that a letter confirming you had it? Presumably it also goes to gp? That’s good

@Frazzled2207 have you had your test results back yet?

Frazzled2207 · 04/04/2021 09:54

@andadietcoke
Yes I did yesterday late afternoon. Negative. You still waiting?

OP posts:
andadietcoke · 04/04/2021 10:20

Yes, still waiting. I'll do a manual look up if I can find the flyer - am hoping she put the barcode on it. I'm sure it'll be negative but I know they need it for the study.

Frazzled2207 · 04/04/2021 10:26

ok fingers crossed. That will be annoying if it doesn't come through but not your fault. My phone failed to scan either barcode and we had to put both in manually which was a right pain but clearly worked.

I had my first cross-over jab yesterday. I have had no reactions at all. None. Last year I had tenderness in the injection sites afterwards, followed by very sore arms. This, together with other things, reinforced my conviction that I had the real vaccine last year. I am mildly worried that my protection may wane earlier than the general population. I am crossing my fingers they will give us a booster at the end!

I had the vaccine in October and have thought the same.

That's why I shall continue to go for follow up bloods as I'm sure they will be looking at antibodies

ItsSnowJokes · 06/04/2021 19:07

Been and had first crossover. Really glad I stuck with novavax here as 80% of participants have unblinded at Bournemouth! They are so grateful for the ones who have stayed in.

I did ask about booster vaccines and they said there may be another kind of trial where all vaccine trials (Novavax, Pfizer, AZ) get given 1 type of booster.

I also asked when the next follow up will be and they said its just looking like the 12 month follow up (November for me).

Easeljeasel · 07/04/2021 00:07

First crossover jab for me today. Arm super sore tonight which is more than I can say for the first two jabs whenI noticed absolutely nothing at all!

That’s a shame about so many dropping out Snowjokes. I definitely found it a tricky choice when offered an NHS jab last week.

I asked today about when they were expecting/ hoping for approval and the doc said this month!!

werekitty · 07/04/2021 07:48

I had my first crossover jab yesterday, arm doesn't hurt nearly as much as the first two jabs so I suspect that I had the real thing in October.

ItsSnowJokes · 07/04/2021 08:55

I had a pounding headache and a really sore arm last night. Arm is sore this morning so I am of the conclusion I had placebo last time (which I suspected anyway) and the real thing yesterday.

I have such high hopes for Novavax and I love the back story that they have never got a vaccine to market and have smashed it at the time that matters. Novavax are also working on a combined flu and covid booster shot all in one so I hope that one works!

Frazzled2207 · 07/04/2021 09:06

Great crossover news! I still have zero side effects after three jabs so don’t know what to think really but not complaining.
Meanwhile loads of people I know have had Az and basically been in bed for two days.

Dr Baxter said he expected novavax to get mhra approval “within the next week or two” and that was a week ago. Fingers crossed.

If Novavax is approved in a week, when would we expect it to start being administered?

Torvean · 07/04/2021 09:57

Thought some of you might be interested in this. Obviously we had smaller intakes.

tested in around 15,000 people in the UK, with 435 of these from the Aberdeen site. Research staff from NHS Grampian were all pulling together to make this study happen in Aberdeen. It was a huge collaborative effort given the tight timelines we were given. Although it was stressful everybody was proud and excited to be part of this. Even more so now, that we see that the hard work has paid off.

The study was a placebo controlled study which means that half the participants got the vaccine and the other half got a placebo. A placebo looks exactly the same as the trial medicine, the vaccine in this case, but contains no medicine. Neither the participants nor the study staff who saw the participants knew if they got placebo or the vaccine. This is called ‘double blinded’. There was a team within the study who administered the placebo/vaccine. They knew what the participants were getting but couldn't tell the other staff working on the study.

The results*:

Vaccine n=7,020

Placebo n=7,020

Total Covid-19 cases

10

96

Mild Covid-19 cases

1

28

Moderate Covid-19 cases

9

63

Severe Covid-19 cases

5

• 106 Covid-19 cases were observed: 10 in the vaccine group and 96 in the placebo group.

• 5 severe cases were observed, all in the placebo group (1 hospitalization). Four of the 5 severe cases were attributed to the B.1.1.7 variant (commonly known as the UK variant).

June onwards is the scheduled delivery of vaccines.
whatswithtodaytoday · 07/04/2021 10:09

@Torvean Very interesting! What does Moderate mean in this context - would that suggest a hospital/paramedic visit? Or just that they were actually ill rather than just feeling under the weather?

andadietcoke · 07/04/2021 10:34

@whatswithtodaytoday I think it says severe = hospitalisation.

Last night I finally got my test results back from Thursday. Negative, predictably, but a long wait.

I was fairly sure I had the active vaccine in October and now am convinced of it. Hopefully they'll get those boosters sorted soon!

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/04/2021 10:59

@andadietcoke Thank you.

Frazzled2207 · 07/04/2021 11:33

June is the date to start with it apparently which seems a bit slow to me as in production already.
But the first doses won’t necessarily be for the uk even if made here sadly

OP posts:
ATieLikeRichardGere · 07/04/2021 12:26

@Frazzled2207 what information do you have suggesting first doses won’t be used in the UK? I sort of assumed that was why the government had moved to ensure the fill and finish was also being carried out here.

Frazzled2207 · 07/04/2021 12:44

I don’t. But just because it’s made in the uk doesn’t necessarily mean all doses made here are for here. Many countries have ordered it and most don’t have their own manufacturing.
Also it is also being made now and our dr told us not going into arms until June so just a thought really.

Snap @Easeljeasel my first crossover today. I've been feeling sick at the thought of the throat swab.

It's weird it was snowing on my April appt and it's snowing today too.
