Thought some of you might be interested in this. Obviously we had smaller intakes.
tested in around 15,000 people in the UK, with 435 of these from the Aberdeen site. Research staff from NHS Grampian were all pulling together to make this study happen in Aberdeen. It was a huge collaborative effort given the tight timelines we were given. Although it was stressful everybody was proud and excited to be part of this. Even more so now, that we see that the hard work has paid off.
The study was a placebo controlled study which means that half the participants got the vaccine and the other half got a placebo. A placebo looks exactly the same as the trial medicine, the vaccine in this case, but contains no medicine. Neither the participants nor the study staff who saw the participants knew if they got placebo or the vaccine. This is called ‘double blinded’. There was a team within the study who administered the placebo/vaccine. They knew what the participants were getting but couldn't tell the other staff working on the study.

• 106 Covid-19 cases were observed: 10 in the vaccine group and 96 in the placebo group.
• 5 severe cases were observed, all in the placebo group (1 hospitalization). Four of the 5 severe cases were attributed to the B.1.1.7 variant (commonly known as the UK variant).
