I hope it's just headlines, surely no one would get 10 years for this when plenty of horrific crime committers are out in far less time.

The stupid thing is that when you go through immigration in our airports they have no idea where you've just arrived from. I flew in from a hot spot, but my flight went via Doha so it looked like I had arrived from Qatar. There wasn't a single check point anywhere.

It'll act as a deterrent to people walking or taking a boat or taxi across borders from a "red" country, then flying from a "green" country (if and when this affects Europe) and/or rorting with transit through green countries.

Yes, I guess if they bring in a new mutation that gets past our vaccines they could sink the country into more lockdowns and deaths.
I can definitely see other countries introducing high penalties like this. Imagine getting into Australia from South Africa and pretending you'd arrived from New Zealand? In reality that wouldn't happen because they have better border control than us, but the significance of lying stands.

I feel the same. The government is constantly dangling the carrot of better times meanwhile taking away more freedoms.

I'm a supporter of stringent measures to contain the virus and can't understand why the UK gov has been so lax but this is massively out of proportion. Worrying.

This is fucking madness. 10 years and people support this? Who the fuck sits in that cabinet and goes oh yea fabulous idea 10 years in prison 🤦‍♀️ and the point upthread about killing millions of people. In that case the government would never see the light of day again!

Gosh, it seems so many people don't understand the seriousness of these variants. 10 years is completely understandable in terms of the absolute havoc being caused by people being irresponsible. I know it seems to be difficult for some people to accept but this virus is very serious and it is really happening. The government are finally understanding what drastic action needs to be taken to ensure people stop dying in such great numbers.
