This government has well and truly lost the plot now. It’s terrifying.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

It wouldn't be needed if the Govt did what is required and just make hotel quarantine mandatory for ALL incoming travellers

True enough, but there are two major problems with that:

  1. There are too many "exceptions" to make it workable
  2. Enforcement's always been a farce
IF these variants pose such grave risks, as we are being told, then a closed border policy is the only response.

Overwise, it looks just like a PR exercise, even the right wing of the troy party are saying its 11 months too late!

midsomermurderess · 09/02/2021 22:03

If you get 10 years for breaking travel quarantine rules, what should the sentence be for taking almost a full year to introduce them?

nordica · 09/02/2021 22:04

It's obviously intended as a deterrent.
There would be little point in setting up the quarantine if someone could just travel in through a country that isn't on the red list and avoid the quarantine.

I am sorry but I agree with the 10 year sentence!

Jellykat · 09/02/2021 22:11

Agree midsomermurderess, was about to say exactly the same!
They've done bugger all so far, bit bloody late now!

Lotusmonster · 09/02/2021 22:18

If the selfish actions of one person breaking quarantine regs produced another year of hell like the one we’ve just been through, then 10 years is just fine by me.

scaevola · 09/02/2021 22:18

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

many people don't understand the seriousness of these variants

The horse has well and truly bolted on these 'serious variants'.

Some are here.

But where will the next one brew up?

Surely no-one can seriously believe that the variants we know about now are the only variants that there will ever be.

peewitsandy · 09/02/2021 22:18

Very very worrying because the 10 year sentence has nothing to do with lying about location from which you came from or lack of isolation.

It is to with making sure the Government can use such terrifying power to ensure people are unable to protest or 'RIOT' against never ending restrictions to freedom hiding behind SAGE and lunatics like Ferguson !

Matt Hancock, like many historical dictators started out as a laughable 'buffoon' but he is man who is a severe threat to the well-being of every person in the UK.

Remember this:

First they came for the Cafe owners who opened up to feed their families and avoid becoming homeless.

Secondly the state gave police the right to enter people's houses on nothing more accurate than gossip from busy body's .

I am very concerned of what comes next .

Wake up everybody the Coronavirus is of course real and a threat to people everywhere , but is being used as cover to implicate many sinister agendas ....

lljkk · 09/02/2021 22:19

Is the £10k fine only for arrivals to England? Or truly all UK, or just GB.
I'm a bit confused...
What are the rules about arrivals to Scotland or Wales?

What happens if they arrive in Norn?

peewitsandy · 09/02/2021 22:22

In controlling a virus ...

LeaveMyDamnJam · 09/02/2021 22:23

The hysteria on this thread is bloody ridiculous.

If you try to avoid quarantine by deliberately trying to hide where you have travelled you will be prosecuted. It doesn’t mean you will end up with a 10 year sentence, that is the maximum proposed tariff for repeat offenders who are deliberately breaking the law. As with any other criminal case.

If you want to travel, then you need to factor in the cost and time of quarantine. If you do this then there is no problem.

This isn’t a removal of human rights. It is to protect society from a bloody hideous virus, that today recorded over 1000 more deaths.

The government are not trying a social experiment. They aren’t competent enough for that. They are,11 months too late, trying to bring in policies to reduce ongoing risk.

boredwiththeoldname · 09/02/2021 22:23

You really don't get it, do you?

It's terrifying that thousands of travellers from all over the world would otherwise be able to come here bringing fuck knows what variants of this virus with them. And considering that they really couldn't give a shit about bringing it here, not self-isolating and maybe killing tens of thousands more people, then we have to show just how serious this is.

It's even more terrifying that there are so many people out there who don't get it.

You do realise that this virus could wipe out the human race if it mutates, don't you?

fluffi · 09/02/2021 22:24

If someone lies about where they have been or doesn't fully comply with all quarantine requirements, they could bring and spread a variant that forces us to shut hospitality / business / schools and lockdown again. It'll be terrible for people and the economy.
On that basis 10 years seems like a reasonable given the potential impact.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 09/02/2021 22:28

A lot of patronising nonsense I this thread. If you start saying things like 'surely people...' or 'you really don't get it..' then ssshhhh.

I agree its probably one of the first sensible things they have done . I mean we can’t see anyone but yes you can freely travel the world is madness . A friend of mine went away just before Christmas which was allowed but when we went back to lockdown was blaming others for it . So nothing to do with no border controls enforcing quarantine/ making people haves tests . No it’s because people like to blame people for mixing households. Now I get there are people that have family in other countries , but it’s a pandemic if we can’t even visit our family in the next street then you can’t get on a plane and visit family then so be it . Now if these new quarantine rules will be enforced is another thing.
Miljea · 09/02/2021 22:52

I read the OP. Only.

I don't by any means usually not read TFT. As it's bloody annoying when someone cuts in 500 posts in to reply to the original OP. And repeat.

So I apologise. I came on here at 18:05 to see if anyone else thought the way I did; but, having 'stepped back' from the Covid Crayzee that one sees over and over on MN, now, I didn't have the energy to be Thread One.

But. Here I am.

Our government is actually, certifiably batshit crazy. Beyond help.

10 years in prison? I'd be better off killing my most annoying neighbour, with an axe, as I'd get way less than that!

What are they actually thinking?

Who is advising them?

Have they learned nothing about 'persuasive powers' over the past 4 years? They need Dominic Cummings to do a PowerPoint. This is what it's come to.

I am actually speechless.

How, but-,why? But? Who the fuck is advising them? (Please don't tell me 95% of previous respondents think death is too good for these 'selfish' peeps!)...

This is a government who really want to be out of power for a generation, don't they?

'Let's close the borders! Let's be firm! let's do it a week next Thursday! (or thereabouts). That'll show 'em how we mean business! (10 months later!)

And yes, I will, once again, wearily, email my MP (Con).

What have we become?

tanguero · 09/02/2021 22:57

Like the majority of folk I'm sick & tired of Covid & lockdown but if this is one of the things that it takes to get out of this nightmare, then so be it. I'd rather have short term pain for long term gain e.g. life & the economy back to normal again.

Though obviously someone who's selfish & stupid enough to lie about where they have flown from & not quarantine actually wants sectioning for their psychopathic behaviour.

Freedoms removed!!!!!!...................

Get a grip !!!!!! Its for a short time!
Noone needs to go away and IF you do, follow the damn rules, Is it that difficult????????

Wtfdidwedo · 09/02/2021 23:02

On that basis 10 years seems like a reasonable given the potential impact.
This would be true if 1) we already had robust sentences in place for serious crimes such as murder, rape and human trafficking, and 2) the government had acted to restrict movement in February last year when it most counted.

For a recent example of our woeful sentencing practices, see the 39 Vietnamese victims of a people smuggling ring. The driver in that case was sentenced to 13 years.

Miljea · 09/02/2021 23:02

@tanguero

I agree its probably one of the first sensible things the Government have done .

That statement comes from a very low bar.

Ask yourself why 'the government' didn't do this 11 months ago?

That might have been sensible. But doing it now? Can't you see it's a populism ploy that evidently some 😉 have fallen for?

We are way, way past this sort of action.

Please don't be duped.

Or take note that many have been hoist by their own petard.

Where's your evidence fair 'for a short time?' Out of interest?

A member of SAGE has already suggested we'll be in and out of lockdown for years.

JengaJanga · 09/02/2021 23:22

@Miljea

Noone NEEDS to travel to ‘red countries’ and if you really must, Then isolate!

Its not hard
