This government has well and truly lost the plot now. It’s terrifying.

What needs to be accepted by everybody including all scientists governments and all citizens is that once groups 1-9 have been vaccinated we have to get on with life.

Ultimately if the vaccines mean we have 20-30 thousand die every year due to them not being particular efficient , we have to accept that is an acceptable price for the right to have a life.

I have been touched twice by the current Covid crisis losing 2 friends in there 60s and a cousin from this Covid Pandemic one was directly due to catching Covid . The other two were due to the shutdown of the NHS services. 1st my cousin was in desperate need of Alcohol support via a place at a rehab center , this of course was not available so she sadly died in December of a weak heart !

The other friend found a lump on her breast but was denied an appointment with her GP in March last year . She finally got to see a specialist in August she died from Breast cancer also in December.

Very very worrying because the 10 year sentence has nothing to do with lying about location from which you came from or lack of isolation.

It is to with making sure the Government can use such terrifying power to ensure people are unable to protest or 'RIOT' against never ending restrictions to freedom hiding behind SAGE and lunatics like Ferguson !

Matt Hancock, like many historical dictators started out as a laughable 'buffoon' but he is man who is a severe threat to the well-being of every person in the UK.

Remember this:

First they came for the Cafe owners who opened up to feed their families and avoid becoming homeless.

Secondly the state gave police the right to enter people's houses on nothing more accurate than gossip from busy body's .

I am very concerned of what comes next .

Wake up everybody the Coronavirus is of course real and a threat to people everywhere , but is being used as cover to implicate many sinister agendas ....

Absolutely on the money. Well said

Do you understand that the reason we were locking down was actually in order to try to stop all those non-covid deaths and issues because the NHS was overwhelmed?

So if going forwards people die from variants that is yes, a personal tragedy for them and their families and yes, maybe we have to accept that as a background death rate from now on.

The problem for the rest of us is that we won't be able to access healthcare so easily, exactly as you have described happened to your friends because those services will still be tied up with covid patients. Because for every 20-30 thousand that die, 100s of thousands get ill.

So life will go on but all of us will be in a much more vulnerable position. That is why the government and scientists are working their butts off trying to find a way round the issue.

@Wtfdidwedo

On that basis 10 years seems like a reasonable given the potential impact. This would be true if 1) we already had robust sentences in place for serious crimes such as murder, rape and human trafficking, and 2) the government had acted to restrict movement in February last year when it most counted.

For a recent example of our woeful sentencing practices, see the 39 Vietnamese victims of a people smuggling ring. The driver in that case was sentenced to 13 years.

Yes government should have closed borders 11 months ago and yes other sentences are woeful.

Just because they Gov have done other things poorly & didn't take robust actions early in the pandemic doesn't mean they shouldn't introduce stronger measures now.

It will be a deterrent and is unlikely to ever be needed.

The point of it is if people travel back from the Red Zones and being back a covid variant which is unaffected by the vaccine, it means the entire country is yet again at risk and everyone will need another vaccine, another major lockdown, another massive hit to the NHS and the economy.

Basically we would be back to square one. Hundreds of people will die and thousands end up in hospital.

Looked at like that the 10 years and £10K isn't enough.

Chloemol · 10/02/2021 10:23

Typical MN hysteria here

It’s about travel from abroad. If you are stupid enough to go abroad on holiday in a pandemic accept you do this on your way back. Agree it’s difficult if you have had to go and see parents abroad for an emergency but it is what it is

As another post says lots have been saying boarders should have been shut earlier, quarantine should have been done earlier, enforced better and now it is its draconian,

No one is stopping you from travelling, just saying add this cost and time needed to your holiday ( although international travel is banned at the moment for mist anyway)

There are some nasty variants out there. What would you prefer more cases? Longer lockdown?

Let’s look at this with logic instead of hysteria, someone comes into the country from South Africa bringing the variant with them, they are asymptomatic . They decide not to quarantine because why the heck should they, they feel ok.

They go to family, go to a work meeting or whatever. Let’s say they are in contact with three others, those three others catch it, and spread it amongst their families, so in total say 10 are infected, 2 need hospital treatment but subsequently die, is that acceptable, would you, if that was your family member who died be happy they were only fined £10k?

That’s why actually a £10k fine is acceptable to me, it’s,hopefully, a deterrent

You could make that argument against any number of criminal or civil offences that don't attract a 10k fine, let alone a 10 year jail sentence.

The Govts argument falls flat because post 15/2, they are still letting in travellers from 165 different countries without enforced quarantine, many of which have had many different CV variants.

What this "deterrent" does show is that the govt can and will introduce extreme jail sentences and that we the population, will go along with.

Its a very dangerous precedent.

It's as much about the optics as the reality. Certainly got people talking about it if that was the intention.

Goodbye2020Helllo2021 · 10/02/2021 11:21

They don't even give rapists, paedophiles it major dealers of Class A drugs ten years. It's totally pointless to pretend this would happen.
Agree! This table of max sentences says it all!
www.thelawpages.com/court-cases/maximums.php

cupofdecaf · 10/02/2021 11:22

It's up to 10 years.
That would only be after a trial with aggravating features and likely where they've caused a death/ deaths.
Compared to similar harm it's inline with other maximum sentences.
