This government has well and truly lost the plot now. It’s terrifying.

@SonnetForSpring

Gosh, it seems so many people don't understand the seriousness of these variants. 10 years is completely understandable in terms of the absolute havoc being caused by people being irresponsible. I know it seems to be difficult for some people to accept but this virus is very serious and it is really happening. The government are finally understanding what drastic action needs to be taken to ensure people stop dying in such great numbers.
Dear God you really believe this???

It's so boring to keep hearing about Cummings. You're as good as saying because he broke the rules and got away with it then rules shouldn't exist and it's a free for all.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/02/2021 21:17

I hope it extends to all covid rule breakers who don't see to give a damn about the fines.

Where do you draw the line? Do you imprison someone for going out for a non essential reason for example? Should someone be imprisoned for not being 2m apart from a friend on a walk?

CrunchyCarrot · 09/02/2021 21:21

It's crazy, far, far too long. Even one year sounds ridiculous.

jasjas1973 · 09/02/2021 21:22

@PicsInRed

It'll act as a deterrent to people walking or taking a boat or taxi across borders from a "red" country, then flying from a "green" country (if and when this affects Europe) and/or rorting with transit through green countries.

I'd think twice, wouldn't you?

You could apply that logic to exceeding the speed limit... 10 years for doing 35 in a 30 limit - that'll make them think twice!

Meanwhile we let in anyone and everyone from a whole list of countries where the SA virus is common place.

My friends teenage son was beaten to death, his killers got 12 years each.

morninglive · 09/02/2021 21:23

Calm down. It's a maximum and will be for repeat offenders. It is a bit extreme even then!

AllMyPrettyOnes · 09/02/2021 21:25

What, 10 years in prison for seeing your family? Get real 😂

I'd begrudge my tax on 10 years in prison so I'd suggest a stint on a covid Ward instead.

With no PPE

ktp100 · 09/02/2021 21:26

Wouldn't even need to threaten it if people just stuck to the rules but the country is riddled with twunts.

Haffiana · 09/02/2021 21:28

They haven’t released the names of the hotel chains yet, have they?

Maybe it IS the Nightingales! Might as well put somebody in them!

With ensuite bed pans... Grin

They aren’t just randomly putting people in prison ffs - it’s to stop people from lying about where they’ve travelled from

Provided you do your quarantine when you travel back from a red list country then nothing happens to you?
Do you want people just coming in from all over the place and spreading the virus?

NotFabulousDarling · 09/02/2021 21:43

Funny how this seems to apply mainly to countries that the Home Office is trying to stop people coming to the UK from anyway. Hmm It's like they're using the pandemic as an excuse to stop people coming to the UK from countries they just don't like. And Portugal. For deniability/diversity.

namechange63524 · 09/02/2021 21:45

I read a recent thread where a bloke had flown in from SA in Dec/Jan to start a new job as a carer. He tested positive and knew this before he boarded the plane. He then went on training courses with other carers. OP got a hard time for being fucked off about it. There needs to be some hardline punishment or penalties about this sort of thing. Of course it won't be ten years - that's nuts. I want unnecessary spread stopped though. It is costing us heavily in deaths, health aand money. If this helps curb some spread, so be it.

NotFabulousDarling · 09/02/2021 21:46

If they cared even slightly about that, they would have acted 12 months ago instead of giving it a year to really get into all the corners of the UK.

Dontknowmuchabouthistory · 09/02/2021 21:46

I can't see the problem. All you have to do is tell the truth to the authorities about where you have been travelling and isolate or quarantine accordingly. If you are found to have lied and are found to have visited 'red-list' countries then you deserve to be imprisoned for endangering the lives of others.

No. Its saying that the rules should apply to all (as recommended by JVT Grin)

Remember "we're all in this together"? No?
Me either

You think it's boring. Other people think its relevant.

It wouldn't be needed if the Govt did what is required and just make hotel quarantine mandatory for ALL incoming travellers.

Relevant to what?

So because one was wrong it's ok for the rest of us to follow suit?

A year later have you learnt nothing?!

Porcupineintherough · 09/02/2021 21:49

Good. Why should the majority suffer so a few can take the piss?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/02/2021 21:51

True enough, but there are two major problems with that:

  1. There are too many "exceptions" to make it workable
  2. Enforcement's always been a farce
Staffy1 · 09/02/2021 21:52

They better get building a load of new prisons then, as they don't seem to have room for proper criminals as it is.

Porridgeoat · 09/02/2021 21:53

They should have done this last February

DareIask · 09/02/2021 21:55

@Porridgeoat

Yes they should. And they're constantly criticised for not doing so. Quite rightly so.

But now they are some are still moaning.

No but hypocrisy is never a good look.

Are you in charge of my education now?Grin
