It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

@MullinerSpec

The man deserved recognition for raising so much for charity. What I'm actually peeved about is the call for raising a statue of him, sure good idea but what about a statue of Indian soldiers who faught during WW2, there's no statue to my knowledge of the sacrifice made by them to this day.
but what do Indian soldiers have to do with Capt Tom? I totally agree we should have a statue(s) of Indian soldiers but isn't what you say a bit like saying "all lives matter" when at a black lives matter protest? The issue is the racism towards capt Tom and white people - why bring up unrelated matters?
CayrolBaaaskin · 04/02/2021 15:33

@Puzzledandpissedoff

I think they need to remove him ASAP before he causes further damage. Then he will be truly free to have an 'opinion'

But if they do that there's every chance he may damn them as a bunch of white supremacists too - and who knows, with some of them he might even have a point

No doubt accepting a gay black activist for training in the ministry looked like a terribly good idea when they were trying to show how inclusive they are ... I just wonder if they feel the same way now

I imagine they don't feel the same way now - not because he is gay and black but because he has expressed these racist views.
trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:34

@Puzzledandpissedoff

he may damn them as a bunch of white supremacists too

He's already doing this. So they have nothing to lose by removing him. He cannot continue spouting hate and division in the name of the Church

@username44416

Dabiral Choudhury raised £150k which is pretty amazing but Captain Tom raised 32 million. I think that's perhaps the difference.
He raised more as it goes. But not as much as Cap Tom. But Cap Tom was only able to raise more because some famous people did stuff with him. Why did they choose him? What was it about him that made him, and not one of the Asian fundraisers, media-worthy? That's the systemic stuff I'm talking about. And what the Rev was talking about.

Happy to agree he prob tweeted for his own publicity! But his message wasn't wrong.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:35

@CayrolBaaaskin

has expressed these racist views

Exactly. His views are the problem, not who he is

Comefromaway · 04/02/2021 15:36

Captain Tom only raised more because the national media took it on and he went viral.

PuzzledObserver · 04/02/2021 15:36

When someone becomes a public figure, there is always the risk that others will use them as a figurehead for something which they themselves would not support. Sad, but true.

I don't see Captain Sir Tom's story as anything to do with nationalism, white or otherwise. I see it as a story of human desire to do something to help in times of great need. He couldn't do much, but what he could do, he did, and it took off.

But I'm white, so maybe I don't see or experience things that black people do. When a black person says something is racist, perhaps we should ask why they think that, rather than shoot them.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 15:37

Piers Morgan, just saying.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:37

@titchy

Why did they choose him

Captain Tom did it first and was followed by Mr.Choudhury. This was probably the reason. Nothing wrong with either of them obviously

But why? Why him that the media took on? Why not the Asian hundred year old?
Xenia · 04/02/2021 15:39

Captain Tom was not supported because he was white. He was an old man who did a brave thing and raised a lot of money for the NHS.

I remember a Bishop of Durham saying he was not sure God existed. The C of E has always been full of slightly strange clergymen - there is form there.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:39

@PuzzledObserver

But I'm white, so maybe I don't see or experience things that black people do

Well, you soon will - if some opinions on this thread are anything to go by

Yes but WHY was there such a difference? I am certain it was because Cptn Tom (without any wrongdoing on his part) fed into a certain narrative
trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:41

@titchy

Why him that the media took on

Because he was there first

He was inspired by World War Two veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised nearly £33m for charity

@titchy It says in this BBC news page that he raised £150k for a Ramadan walk. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-52757533 His walk was inspired by Captain Tom's walk and he made the national news with it.

Captain Tom raised nearly 33 million. Both achievements are amazing, as stated above, but 33 million is huge sum of money. His feat took off because he was the first to do it, it went viral on social media and captured people's attention in the first lockdown.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:44

@Xenia

I remember a Bishop of Durham saying he was not sure God existed

Blimey!

@Hoppinggreen see the post above. Cpt Tom was the first to do it.

Hoppinggreen · 04/02/2021 15:46
@Hoppinggreen see the post above. Cpt Tom was the first to do it.
That may well have been partly it

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 15:46

The C of E has always been full of slightly strange clergymen

I wouldn't disagree - though TBF it's hardly alone in that

derxa · 04/02/2021 15:46

There was a wee white woman who walked up and down her stairs. Somewhere in Scotland. She didn't raise as much as Tom Moore either.
That must have been misogyny.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 04/02/2021 15:48

Captain Tom inadvertently captured the zeitgeist

That’s how it goes sometimes

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:49

@Puzzledandpissedoff

though TBF it's hardly alone in that

Exactly. And when that happens repeatedly (as it seems to be the case here), these leaders should be removed

OP posts:

Was he trying to say that he had the cult of White British Nationalism behind him because he was a war hero?

Bluebelle41 · 04/02/2021 15:52

I don’t disagree with the tweet in question, but I do think it was unnecessary to post at this time.
