It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

OP posts:
@Theunamedcat
I don’t want to be rude but how on earth did you miss the many, many racist comments made by Johnson (and many of his cabinet members)? They were most certainly reported by the BBC, the Guardian, even the Telegraph...
Why are you discussing BJ and not this priest. These remarks by BJ have been requoted on MN hundreds of times. This is something new.

Lordamighty · 04/02/2021 19:27

Whataboutery it’s a form of derailment from the original topic.

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 19:29

I believe that was to me as I said I hadn't heard.
There isn't a thread police (although I'm sure your application to the post will be speedy if there is one) and it is perfectly ok to respond to another poster. Even if they disagree or challenge with, in this case, me.

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 19:30

Not derailment.

A 100 yo dying is not a tragedy.

Back there for you.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 19:34

Whataboutery it’s a form of derailment from the original topic

I'm afraid so - only this time it's more obvious than usual

Fortunately most of us can think of more than one thing at a time, so while we (rightly) deplore Boris's racism, we can focus on this cleric too

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 19:35

A 100 yo dying is not a tragedy

It’s not! The gushing I’ve seen on social media about his .”tragic death” and how “devastated” people are is completely OTT and ridiculous.

I can understand why the cleric made those comments even if I think they were very ill timed and insensitive

bourbonne · 04/02/2021 19:39

I think it's a slightly barking message (the White Nationalist bit; I would otherwise see what he means), but what's with the C of E apologising for him like he's been a naught boy?

I like the idea of an outspoken, opinionated, possibly slightly barking vicar... It's a modern idea that clergymen should be bland and nicey-nice all the time.

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 19:41

His timing was wrong. Same as Jack Monroe had a point when she made those comments about David Cameron's son and the NHS. But she chose a bloody stupid time to say it. And timing really is everything.

Theworldisfullofgs · 04/02/2021 19:46

We were talking about Johnson because the Op said that he should be stripped of his role but Johnson shouldn't

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 19:53

Fortunately most of us can think of more than one thing at a time, so while we (rightly) deplore Boris's racism, we can focus on this cleric too

Yes but isn’t the entire point here that the media is baying for a grovelling apology from this cleric when they HAVENT from boris who is our bloody PM. Can you not see the hypocrisy here???

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/02/2021 19:54

Theres a few people saying they understand what he meant, and he had a point.

Can I ask why it is you think only white people engaged in the clap last night?

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 20:00

Sadly, I think we both know the answer to that.

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:03

Sadly, I think we both know the answer to that

Yes. Sigh

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/02/2021 20:05

Google Boris Johnson racism and you will find hundreds of articles demanding he apologise.

But you knew that, its just whataboutery to accuse everyone of racism except the racist this thread was about.

greycloudysky · 04/02/2021 20:09

Some people think white = racist. I don't think there's more to it than that.

As a pp said up thread. Rashford has been rightly celebrated, also receiving an MBE for his charity fundraising during Covid. Anyone criticising that, would be rightly slated. Yet, because Captain Tom is white and served his country, he's naturally affiliated with the very people he fought against - fascists. I think it's pretty despicable.

It's a race to the bottom arguing about who is more deserving of losing their job because of racist remarks.

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:10

Google Boris Johnson racism and you will find hundreds of articles demanding he apologise

On the front page of the papers?

Lol nope. Nice try though.

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:11

Just did a quick google- couldn’t find one front page demanding an apology from boris.

Found some about his “most contrived comments” but not one single front page demanding he apologise

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:12

Controversial that should be not contrived

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 20:12

Were there any on here? I didn't see the original comments by BoJo , the press or here but that would be the comparable

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/02/2021 20:13

On todays front page, no.

When he made the comments, yes.

But its very telling that you defend one mans racism while attacking another. Why is that? Hmm

DimidDavilby · 04/02/2021 20:14
@PuzzledObserver

and how something can be done to increase vaccine uptake among poorer communities

Well, according to the press, this clergyman openly speaks against the Tory government, so who knows what his advice regarding the vaccine would be
Not following your logic here? Is there any?

Worknoplay · 04/02/2021 20:14

It's a bit rich to mention Rashford as he is constantly being the subject of racist abuse online. Vicious, persistent, targeted and organised racist abuse.

I agree with a lot of points made in the article, and I didn't clap Captain Tom on my doorstep. I'd vote for a party that would increase the pay for nurses and doctors though.

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:14

@PheasantPlucker1

On todays front page, no.

When he made the comments, yes.

But its very telling that you defend one mans racism while attacking another. Why is that? Hmm

It’s also very telling that you apparently accept the leader of our country saying racist crap yet you are all over this cleric- why is that? 🤔
Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 20:15

Because I agree with one person and not the other. You saying it's racist doesn't make it so.
-we can both do head tilts-

Russellbrandshair · 04/02/2021 20:16

Exactly. Well said.
