It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

Tolerance does indeed work both ways.

I think it was a horrible comment to make.

For what it is worth (nothing really in this context I suppose) the man who made my life an absolute misery at work for over 4 years (including making very serious allegations which were untrue and malicious in the extreme) was very involved in the church.

I’m not sure what they are teaching in some churches nowadays but it isn’t the love and tolerance that was taught in mine.

cinammonbuns · 04/02/2021 18:11

@username44416 well apparently the majority of the U.K. doesn’t agree. I guess there is no consensus that people who say racist things should be fired.

Most people are fired. It's considered a hate crime. Those that aren't tend to have connections in the right places. Johnson has done nothing but fuel division and hate with his vile opinions. He's also using the death of Cpt Tom as way of diverting attention from his appalling record as PM. Like I said earlier, those with an agenda will choose causes to suit them.

I think it's sickening that someone with such views became PM.

@PuzzledObserver

and how something can be done to increase vaccine uptake among poorer communities

Well, according to the press, this clergyman openly speaks against the Tory government, so who knows what his advice regarding the vaccine would be
@Theworldisfullofgs I did ask the op what they thought of people saying racist things being stripped of positions of leadership re Boris but unsurprisingly I received no reply.
Telling, that.

Honestly, if there were such a thing as a closet racist bingo card, the OP's posts would tick every box.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 18:17

@cinammonbuns

I did ask the op what they thought of people saying racist things being stripped of positions of leadership

In this case he is supposed to be representing the Church (of E) so it makes it 100x worse

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 18:21

Given that he is a man of God I am surprised - nay, dismayed - at his comments

I take your point, but unfortunately churches aren't exempt from attracting their share of the, shall we say, ill advised

You might hope they'd be a bit more careful but the current drive for wokeness, allied perhaps to a bit of naivety, can be a poor combination

Why?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/02/2021 18:23

Worse than the PM making remarks that actually are racist??

Theworldisfullofgs · 04/02/2021 18:24

Johnson is representing a nation - 4 countries.

He is meant to embody british values.

It's a tiny bit more influential than a vicar of a church that only some people belong to. Johnson represents all of us whether we like it or not.

DarcyJack · 04/02/2021 18:26

Would we not have had a clap if Marcus Rashford had died of coronavirus then? You know, that young chap who has raised £20 million (based in part on who he is)? I mean I doubt the blond git would have suggested it, as Marcus has had to shake him for every penny he has begrudgingly coughed up, but I think ordinary people would have wanted to honour him. Most people see Tom and Marcus as coronavirus hero's- though in many ways they are very different people.

AgeLikeWine · 04/02/2021 18:27

In my view, the hysteria surrounding Tom Moore has got completely out of hand over the last 48 hours. That isn’t in any way a criticism of the man himself,

Robinson-Brown’s comments, however, were blatantly racist. If a white cleric had called the BLM protests ‘a cult of black nationalism’ he would immediately have been sacked and prosecuted for incitement. The double standards around these issues are a disgrace.

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/02/2021 18:31

Agree the comments were entirely racist, and the "whataboutery" whinging about Boris is pathetic.

Of course Boris Johnsons comments were racist, and he should never have become PM. But thats completely irrelevant to what this idiot has said.

Theworldisfullofgs · 04/02/2021 18:45

What Johnson said is not really irrelevant if your view is that the vicar should be stripped of his job.
The same standards should apply to everyone (but of course we know they don't).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 18:47

If you think this guy is discriminatory and should be 'stripped of his position' then I presume you also think the same should apply to Johnson for his remarks like calling black people 'picininnies with watermelon smiles' or women who wear burkas 'letter boxes'

Yes, of course - and I'm no more impressed by his "apologies" than I am the clergyman's

..you know the prime minister is supposed to represent the entire U.K.?

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/02/2021 18:52

The problem with your argument about Boris is youre now implying every idiot who makes racist comments should be excused.

Which isnt acceptable to anyone.

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 18:59

Did not know BoJo said those . That's awful from a leader of a country.

I never voted for him in the first place your right if he is racist he shouldn't be in number 10 (I'm saying if because I haven't googled so I don't know the story)

The thing is why hasn't anything been done about it?

username44416 · 04/02/2021 19:05

The thing is why hasn't anything been done about it?

The right wing press, which is owned by a handful of billionaires, wanted Johnson in power. That's why you didn't hear about it.

JeansNTees · 04/02/2021 19:06

Dr Peter Tun was, I believe, one of the first doctors to die of Covid, after asking for and being denied PPE early on in the pandemic. Many, many healthcare staff have died and yes BAME staff are dying in larger numbers. Lets have a petition for them to receive recognition for their actual sacrifice of their lives and get a memorial, statue, bank holiday in memory of them. Oh wait, they barely even get a mention in the media. Guess they didn't have good PR.

Idocaredoyou · 04/02/2021 19:12

Exactly. I lived by him and he was a lovely man. Utterly despicable.

80sMum · 04/02/2021 19:17

He should have just not said anything. The clapping wasn't compulsory. If he didn't like it then he didn't have to join in.

I can't see the point of all the clapping myself, so wouldn't join in with this clapping, nor any of the other clapping, banging of pots and pans etc that went on a few months ago.

BaconandWaffles · 04/02/2021 19:17

@Theunamedcat
I don’t want to be rude but how on earth did you miss the many, many racist comments made by Johnson (and many of his cabinet members)? They were most certainly reported by the BBC, the Guardian, even the Telegraph...

I agree. I think his comments were rather ill advised and his timing was awful but can we just turn it down a notch with the captain Tom hysteria?

It’s ridiculous. He did a good thing but so have MANY MANY people during this pandemic but they don’t get claps do they? The man got to age 100- fgs, enough with this tragic death crap. Lots of my family would have given their right arm to get to age 100., my friend lost her daughter at age 5.

A 100 year old dying is not a tragedy.
