It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

@drivinmecrazy

username44416 you miss the point. Captain Tom was a media construct because he was white. Had he been any other race we'd never of heard of him.
No, I just don't agree with your opinion. I think we'd have heard of anyone who raised 33 million.
Helmetbymidnight · 04/02/2021 16:56

He was foolish to wade in.

Massively respect Captain Tom and think his dying of Covid is incredibly poignant - but wouldn't clap at Boris's behest. 100000 dead - partly because of Boris's failings...Millions fund-raised for the NHS - partly because of the Cons screwing the NHS. Where's the £350 mil a week, Boris?!

However, I wouldn't go public on this on FB because I know people would deliberately misunderstand it - and pretend that I was angry with Captain Tom.
@MolyHolyGuacamole Ah, so it's ok for the Scots, but not for anyone else? A bit like how other populations are praised for their patriotism but if it's us then it's awful nationalism? Right.
Can you...not read for comprehension?

Oh and there's a huge difference between patriotism and nationalism. A quick google will clear this up for you

The cult of Captain Tom is a cult of White British Nationalism

I think someone who tweeted this should be stripped of their position of Church leadership

Very dangerous and offensive message

It's about our fetishism for the second world war more than anything.
Frodont · 04/02/2021 16:59

I hate this (the fetishism of the 2nd ww).

Bibidy · 04/02/2021 17:00

I don't know why it's 'white british nationalism' either. Just because he is white and fought in the war?

He was an old man who did a great thing when he didn't have to bother himself at his age. People warmed to him and wanted to show a bit of respect for his passing. I can't see how it's nationalism at all?

Justforphoto · 04/02/2021 17:00

No, I just don't agree with your opinion. I think we'd have heard of anyone who raised 33 million.

Without the media using him as a poster boy he would not have raised 33 million. The point is that he wouldn't have got the media attention if he had not been who he is.

username44416 · 04/02/2021 17:02

@justanotherneighinparadise

Is a ‘person of colour’ an acceptable term? I thought that was racist.
It's not racist at all. Just like being born white isn't racist.

That's pure conjecture on your part.
derxa · 04/02/2021 17:04

Scottish Nationalism may be an imperfect name for seeking the independence of this imperfect little nation. But don’t let its detractors kid you that there’s any equivalence with English nationalism or what Britishness has lately come to mean.' I'm Scottish and proud to be so.
But there is a dark underbelly of anti English sentiment here. Plus sectarianism and racism despite what Nicola would have you believe. Plus the SNP don't know what a woman is.

DedlyMedally · 04/02/2021 17:06

The tweet was certainly insensitive and it probably didn't need to be tweeted when he tweeted but I don't necessarily think it had no basis in reality.

reformedcharacters · 04/02/2021 17:14

derxa I was in Scotland visiting my aunt and had my DC with me, an SNP supporter handing out leaflets asked if I was English and when I said yes he “we’ll go home” (nastily) right in front of the DC.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/02/2021 17:19

I think it's interesting that you perceive him as full of hatred based on absolutely fuck all evidence. I wonder if you would feel the same way if he had been white?

He's actually said he will pray for Captain Tom, and has described him as a kind and generous soul. Not exactly hateful.

He has also since apologised and deleted the tweet.

He has been receiving racist abuse (now that IS hateful) and I wouldn't be surprised if he's in personal danger. Why can't you leave him alone?

aliloandabanana · 04/02/2021 17:34

@holymolyguacamole the difference between patriotism and nationalism was my point.

derxa · 04/02/2021 17:37

Pet8 · 04/02/2021 17:42

@Radio4Rocks

I agree with him. There was no criticism of Captain Tom implied just of a certain type of admirer, They are to be found all over facebook. Racist to the core. Surely you have seen that?
This ^
Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 17:46

It is indeed - completely unacceptable no matter what the circumstances

Toptotoeunicolour · 04/02/2021 17:50

I'm neither here nor there with the clapping but the above comment is just bonkers and only provides information about the person who is saying it.

PurpleRainDancer · 04/02/2021 17:52

@Lordamighty

I think it’s a vile comment to make.
Absolutely he should be bloody ashamed of himself.
Glenchase · 04/02/2021 18:01

Won't be any calls for statues for them though will there
They haven’t died of Covid though. Captain Sir Tom’s story is particularly poignant because not only did he become a symbol of the fight against Covid, he also sadly succumbed to it.

Some posters seem to think that the fact that given that - allegedly- a small number of white nationalists have made racist comments off the back of Sir Captain Tom’s achievements, that means that ALL white people who celebrate him are racist.
And this is the exact problem I have with the tweet in question. He didn’t say that SOME supporters are using Captain Sir Tom to support white nationalism. He equated the two, i.e. anyone who supports Captain Sir Tom is a white nationalist.

IrmaFayLear · 04/02/2021 18:07

Given that he is a man of God I am surprised - nay, dismayed - at his comments. Very ill-judged and sweeping . Does he think poorly of his congregation? I am not a church-goer, but if I were and had supported/clapped Captain Tom I would be a bit Hmm about how he regarded his parishioners.

Theworldisfullofgs · 04/02/2021 18:07

If you think this guy is discriminatory and should be 'stripped of his position' then I presume you also think the same should apply to Johnson for his remarks like calling black people 'picininnies with watermelon smiles' or women who wear burkas 'letter boxes'.

And to be honest I think he has a point, however clumsily put.

I think Johnson should have been sacked from the paper for his disgusting views and should never have been PM. I think he's a piece of shit.
cinammonbuns · 04/02/2021 18:10

@Theworldisfullofgs I did ask the op what they thought of people saying racist things being stripped of positions of leadership re Boris but unsurprisingly I received no reply.
