This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4145954-6-3-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to observe our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain and one-legged trousers - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a truly tremendous 10,021,471 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 18.9% (or 1 in every 5.3) of all UK adults.

There’s no doubt about it - there is an unmistakable light at the end of this long, long tunnel and every day it’s getting brighter. Come on folks - let’s do this!! Grin

16.8m people vaccinated already - brilliant!” sounds like a title of a thread that I want to be on!

It could be called 17m vaccinated as its likely that by now there have been 🥳

CaveMum · 19/02/2021 14:30

Ooh, can we hold out until 4pm to get today’s official numbers and then start the new thread?!

2021isgoingtobeasshitas2020 · 19/02/2021 14:34

Excellent. Baby steps to normality Smile

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 19/02/2021 14:36

Maybe make the new thread with a guess number and get mumsnet to change if wrong

How close are we to 1 in 3 adults? How many adults are there in the UK?

There are 53 million adults (over 18s) in the UK, so 1 in 3 would be 17,666,666. At the rate we’re going, I think we should see something near that figure on the gov.uk website on Sunday?

@PuzzledObserver

I came on to post the link and you beat me to it!

How close are we to 1 in 3 adults? How many adults are there in the UK?

54.1 million over 16s in the UK. A smidgeon over 18 million is the milestone.
DdraigGoch · 19/02/2021 15:17

Remember that the vaccine is licensed for those aged 16 and over, not 18.

buttery81 · 19/02/2021 15:20

I didn’t know that. I’m still counting adults as 18 and over, though! Smile

A single dose of the Pfizer vaccine gives you 85% protection against symptomatic illness and 75% protection against asymptomatic transmission.

Whoop whoop!

Figures just released:

First dose: 16,875,536
Second dose: 589,591

That’s an increase of 452,454 first doses on yesterday 🎊🎉

On with the new thread @buttery81!

CaveMum · 19/02/2021 16:13

Can’t see yesterday’s second dose figures so not sure how many of those were done yesterday.

CaveMum · 19/02/2021 16:16

Well the gov.uk graphs show there were more than yesterday, so certainly more than 15,000, one of which was Sir Billy Connolly!

More justification for the 12-week gap between jabs, reported on BBC:

Higher efficacy in Oxford jab with three months between doses

A three-month gap between the two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine results in higher vaccine efficacy than a six-week gap, a new study suggests.

The research indicates that with three months between the first and second dose there was an overall efficacy of 81%, compared to 55% for a six-week interval.

The first dose offered 76% protection in the three months between doses, according to the University of Oxford research published in The Lancet.

FannyCann · 19/02/2021 16:50

I may have missed it but surely we are soon approaching a three month hiatus when second jabs must be given, delaying delivery of first jabs for those further down the queue?

Mumoftwoinprimary · 19/02/2021 16:57

Not for a while.

We vaccinated one million in Dec 2020 so need to do one million by the 25th March. As we are averaging 2.5 - 3 million per week we will barely notice that.

Post 25th March there will be a lot more but the hope is that supply will massively ramp up in April so there should still be quite a few doses left over for 1st doses.

DdraigGoch · 19/02/2021 17:06

First jabs for groups 1-9 will be virtually done by the time that the second dose throughput needs to ramp up spectacularly. Hopefully supply will increase by then to allow us to keep administering first doses. Either way, the vulnerable will be protected.

Lubiluxe · 19/02/2021 17:07

When will first 9 groups be vaccinated? I saw reports today that all over 40s may be offered vaccine by end of March... is there truth in that?

CoffeeandCroissant · 19/02/2021 17:10

Good news for Billy Connolly, but he lives in Florida, so won't be part of the UK figures. Smile

I did not know that Blush Grin

@buttery81 where are you?! We’re almost out of thread!

FannyCann · 19/02/2021 17:18

Hopefully Mumoftwoinprimary but the increased availability of supply needs to be matched by increased wo/man power to deliver the doses. Fingers crossed someone has planned for that.

CoffeeandCroissant · 19/02/2021 17:23

Looking out the window at the Scottish weather, Florida sounds very appealing right now (although Seville or Canaries would appeal to me even more...)
