I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

I always think of Tinker Bell when the talk of clapping comes about

Ditto! And the little tinker never appeared!
PutTheBathOnPlease · 02/02/2021 23:09

The only appropriate clapping is slow clapping for this absolutely disgraceful and incompetent government Angry

That shite Tinkerbell never came! It's been months since the last clap and I'm so bitter
Chimeraforce · 02/02/2021 23:09

No I won't be doing this.

cansu · 02/02/2021 23:11

It is pretty awful in my opinion. It implies that people knew him. He did some amazing charity work which was recognised. He is loved by his family who will mourn him. It should not be turned into a circus.

PeggyHill · 02/02/2021 23:19

I haven't lived in the UK for a few years but I'm sure I don't remember this clapping on your doorstep thing.

Is it something that's started up during covid?

truthisalie · 02/02/2021 23:23

Lighting a commemorative candle.

slashlover · 02/02/2021 23:23

This popped up on FB. I'm going to have to unfriend them, aren't I?

@tatutata

He was old. He died. We all will.
True.

But some of us do a bit more while we live and leave a bit more of a legacy than others.

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 23:26

@slashlover

Puts me in mind of this

(And yes, unfriend them. And move, just in case.)

Clapping is very cheap and tasteless, sorry. It's simply showing off. Light a candle, raise a glass of wine, plant a tree or a house plant to commemorate Sir Tom and other people who lost their battle because of Covid19. Do something meaningful.

NoddyMcPintsAlot · 02/02/2021 23:27

Good grief those pictures are absolutely awful. They are downright insulting to him and his family. People need to give their heads a serious fucking wobble with the mourn porn carry on.

LakeGeneva · 02/02/2021 23:28

Yeah after there was footage of some folks clapping on balconies in Spain everyone in the UK tried to show how warm hearted and Mediterranean they were while simultaneously leaving the EU by clapping the world beating envy of the planet healthcare system that chucked thousands of covid+ patients into nursing homes to die.

And if you didn't do it then you might as well have just surrendered your own and your mother in law's arse and net curtains to Hitler 25 years before you were born.

Reports are that it was a very positive and unifying experience.

LakeGeneva · 02/02/2021 23:29

That was to @PeggyHill.

@Misandrylovescompany

Nation in mourning for an old bloke who had a nice sunshine holiday?! Really?!
FFS is this turning into some sort of sick competition about who can be nastiest about an elderly man who has just died. Is that seriously what you reduce his life down to ? Even before Covid he fought for this country and like countless thousands put his life on the line and I’m sure he would have been the first to say that he was one of the lucky ones but in debasing him like this you debase so many others. I am not one calling for clapping on Thurs or a national memorial or anything else but surely we can all say that he loved this country, tried to do something in a time of despair and brought a little solace and hope to a lot of people when it was desperately needed.

Ah, I see.

It sounds stupid. No offense meant.

Redbrickwall · 02/02/2021 23:50

@Londonisburningg

So will everyone be clapping for the other 100,000+ who have died of covid, or other illnesses throughout the pandemic? Seriously sick of this hero worshipping shit
Snap!
SquirtleSquad · 02/02/2021 23:51

This is much more disrespectful than anything posted on this thread.
No clapping. His family don't want it and nor do most sensible people.
Of course it's sad that he's passed away after raising such a great amount of money for the NHS but he was 100. It could have happened of any cause at any time.

Please stop the Diana references, it's entirely different.

I would happily do this. I'll probably have a tear in my eye for all the other people who've died and their loved ones mourning them.
Costs me nothing and it feels nice to do something at a time when we're fairly helpless/powerless.

And fuck off with the virtue signalling bollocks, I have massive fences and no one will see or know, or probably care, that I'm doing it.

I'm not in mourning for Captain Tom. I don't even know the bloke. I'm in mourning for my wife who died 7 months ago today. I'm certainly not taking part in any ridiculous clapping for him or anyone else. Get a grip!

I’m struggling with the reactions towards Captain Sir Tom. Not to distract from his accomplishments over his lifetime and the grief that those who know and love him will experience. But there’s something about the tears face on Facebook and BBC obits I’m ambivalent about.
