I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

I just saw one of him with his walking frame, badly photoshopped into shit picture of heaven.

But yeah I'm the disrespectful one for not clapping Hmm

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 22:40

@Thewiseoneincognito

He served the country well, He was decorated and honoured whilst he was alive which is what matters. Clapping for him is just printing off virtues to signal post to everyone who’ll see.

Christ the guys reached 100 what the hell do people want? I will not be clapping, no.

Deepest condolences to his family but seriously this guy swanned off to Barbados which j think is very selfish in a pandemic where his age group is the very reason the world is fucked right now.

I'm not even going to Barbados as a thirty year old, I could but am very aware of brining back COVID and spreading it to vulnerable people so I don't.

Sorry but, no,

No, but Captain Tom’s family had a huge publicity outlet and absolutely should have declined on principle. And encouraged people to enjoy a low-key Christmas at home with their household.

Can’t have it both ways. Going on the holiday undermined Tom’s work in itself.[/quote]
This.

I don't understand why @Ilovemypantry has so much disdain for those who are mask exempt but still need to go shopping and use public transport because they have no choice, but a man travelling unnecessarily and against guidelines half way around the world to contribute to a spike in infections in a country previously doing well is fine.

Was it this one? One of my former colleagues has just made it their profile picture Confused I've logged off FB for the next few days because this kind of mawkish tat really lowers my opinion of people.

Of course Tom and his family weren’t the only ones to go there at that time but with all of the publicity they absolutely should have declined on principle. There was NO need for it.

This. I'm utterly pissed that a 100 year old person chose to go last month when we know he had a very high likely hood of needing ICU treatment (which he got) if he ended up sick with COVID. It's taking the piss.

Sorry, but literally I have the money and time to do the exact above but on the 0.001 percent chance ill need icu I have declined, as I don't want to take up a bed someone else might need or pass this crappy virus to someone vulnerable.

Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 22:46

@BoredBeforelEvenBegan
Did he have Covid when he went to Barbados then, thus contributing to a spike in infections there? I’m surprised he was allowed to travel there with Covid.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 02/02/2021 22:46

I will raise a glass to him out of respect 🍷

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/02/2021 22:47

@tinytemper66

Don't want to be disrespectful but no.
I feel the same.

I really don't think it's something he would have appreciated. He wasn't from a generation that made a fuss about things.

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 22:47

@PurpleDaisies I know, bizarre comment

Mind you, this is Mumsnet

Maybe she worried about all the snapping and farting going on around those candles

BananaPop2020 · 02/02/2021 22:47

@BlowDryRat that is truly, truly awful, and disrespectful to him and his achievements. Don’t blame you for logging off FB, there is a quickly mounting set of posts on my local community group. I see Michael Ball has jumped in the bandwagon too, which is absolutely no surprise.

KnobblyWand · 02/02/2021 22:47

@BlowDryRat no, it was this one, but that one is spectacularly shit Shock

It makes me think this whole pandemic is just utter bollocks and the NHS we may as well just let overflow. Because people - sir Tom included - are not taking the virus seriously enough.

What's the fucking point? Of a half arsed lockdown, not only are we having countless deaths but we are killing the economy too - better to save at least one of the two but people, sir Tom included, don't seem to understand.

Same here. I would much rather eat, drink and be merry than spend 10 mins in the cold and dark clapping.
nancyclancy123 · 02/02/2021 22:50

I hate the idea of clapping on our door steps for absolutely everything. It’s fooking ridiculous now!!

RIP Captain Sir Tom

I

My DiL pointed out that if they all stood out on their terraced street they would all be far too close to each other!

I have seen this one too. First thing that came to mind was the Stephen Hawking one where he is at the bottom of the stairway to Heaven saying "oh shit". I am clearly going to hell.

Who knows? Just as you don't know whether all those who aren't wearing masks in M&S do or not.

So to be clear... You think international travel is ok? Or is it only ok for some?

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 22:52

I'm sorry but those Facebook pictures look like something out of Viz!

I cannot help but think the clap shamers are privileged types who live in detached houses with big gardens. Nothing wrong with that, but at least own your privilege and stop shaming people who may not have the same!a

Highest covid rates have been in parts of the U K where homes and families are crammed together. No prizes for guessing why

Toddlerteaplease · 02/02/2021 22:54

The poetry hung around on social media is absolutely nauseating. 🤮🤮

Flesh · 02/02/2021 22:55

I cancelled our family trip to Barbados because I didn't think it was right to go and put anyone at risk this Christmas.

RIP Tom but I think people should at least be allowed to acknowledge it was foolhardy to travel anywhere on a plane let alone an 11 hour flight.

Lepetitpiggy · 02/02/2021 22:56

@moonpig23

The daughter will be all over that. She loves her 15 minutes of fame.
Yep. I always found her wholly distasteful. And as for Michael Bloody Ball....
WaterBottle123 · 02/02/2021 22:56

@FuzzyPuffling

I might be persuaded to clap for scientists though.
@FuzzyPuffling

And me.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/02/2021 22:59

The village Facebook has a message on it from a family friend that says that family has essentially asked for people not to do this

You'd think people would honour Tom by respecting his family's wishes, but this is turning into the Diana thing all over again

Since when was it appropriate to make someone else's grief all about yourself?
