This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

I think people might be clapped out?
I think a different idea would be better like plant flowers or something.

tinytemper66 · 02/02/2021 20:47

Don't want to be disrespectful but no.

Londonisburningg · 02/02/2021 20:47

So will everyone be clapping for the other 100,000+ who have died of covid, or other illnesses throughout the pandemic? Seriously sick of this hero worshipping shit

FuzzyPuffling · 02/02/2021 20:48

No, not for me.

TiddyTid · 02/02/2021 20:49

Lighting a candle? For Sir Tom and all those lost?

FuzzyPuffling · 02/02/2021 20:49

I might be persuaded to clap for scientists though.

SeldomFollowedIt · 02/02/2021 20:50

What @FuzzyPuffling said.

XenoBitch · 02/02/2021 20:50

Nooo thanks. Maybe a statue or something.. but weekly enforced (the shaming for people not taking part was unreal) remembrance... just no.
At least with the NHS clap, someone who appreciated it and got comfort from it was likely to hear it.

Scottishgirl85 · 02/02/2021 20:51

Sorry but no. Why recycle a show of appreciation for NHS and turn it into something else. I think the biggest show of appreciation for Captain Tom would be quiet reflection and gratitude and to raise another £40m for charity.

tatutata · 02/02/2021 20:51

He was old. He died. We all will.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 20:51

It would be better if they opened up a specific place where people could donate to charity in his memory.

I don’t think people are up for clapping again.

He was a great personality, but no more clapping please.

Absolutely agree!

I think it's too late now, it's all over social media for the clap on Thursday.

Wilsonwilson · 02/02/2021 20:53

No. I didn't clap, I will never clap. Tom was 100 years old ffs. What the fuck good does anyone clapping do.

MissyB1 · 02/02/2021 20:53

I wish people would stop all the virtue signalling. We can all pay our own private respects to this amazing man without having to prove it by standing on our doorsteps.
If one more person asks me to clap for something I will clap them around the head!

CoffeeWithCheese · 02/02/2021 20:53

Surely the best memory would be to fund the NHS to the point a pensioner doesn't have to do laps of his garden and be orchestrated into being a "viral" phenomenon to raise money in the first place?

And please no more clapping past young kids' bedtimes - it was bloody hell for some of us during the mandatory claps last time around. If you want to do one - make it at noon on a Sunday and a one-time only thing so the kids can at least join in - lots of us are trying desperately to keep ours into a routine at present.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 20:54

I wouldn’t be clapping for scientists either. Clapping is done.

The only time I’ll be clapping on the street is when this is all over.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 02/02/2021 20:54

Lighting a candle quietly for everyone who has lost their life is a nice idea.
It’s not performative.

I hate the idea of clapping on the doorstep on Thursday.

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 20:54

I will not be doing that. Actually I'll be at work so I don't have to.

Wilsonwilson · 02/02/2021 20:54

Is that just clapping for any random scientist?

XenoBitch · 02/02/2021 20:55

@Wilsonwilson

No. I didn't clap, I will never clap. Tom was 100 years old ffs. What the fuck good does anyone clapping do.
Virtue signalling. Nothing more.
BananaPop2020 · 02/02/2021 20:55

If we are going down this road, wouldn’t two minutes of silence be better for everyone that has died during the pandemic?
