This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

A statue is a great idea.

@Londonisburningg

So will everyone be clapping for the other 100,000+ who have died of covid, or other illnesses throughout the pandemic? Seriously sick of this hero worshipping shit
So in your opinion he wasn’t a hero?
stillonthattightrope · 02/02/2021 21:33

This is getting ridiculous. You are not grieving OP, you didn't know him.
This hero worship stuff is crazy. It was mawkish bullshit when Diana died and it's mawkish bullshit now. People need to get a grip.

Yes he did a wonderful thing but you know what, we should be fucking angry that a 99 year old man felt he needed to be trotting round his garden to raise money for a public service which should be better funded in the first place. That's where our focus needs to be.
Also, people are getting pissy when it's mentioned that he went on holiday recently. Well, not only is it stupid and wrong for anyone to be flying off on holiday during a pandemic it's also incredibly selfish to travel from a country where Covid rates were so high to an island who had low rates of cases.

People have been bitching about the 'influencers' going to Dubai but this is no better.

@NothingIsWrong

A nation in mourning really is a stretch. He did a good thing, but a short illness followed by death at 100 is hardly a life cut short in its prime.
I mean, if you look at the other threads here...

It's sad for his family and friends. But he lived long and well, it seems.

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 21:35

Another round of clapping to 'bring the nation together' and distract from this shitshow of the government's doing.

No ta.

I must be living in a parallel universe. But it'll probably happen.
cantmakealifeofit · 02/02/2021 21:35

The most lunatic thing I’ve seen is people saying Boris should be held personally accountable for Captain Tom’s death.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the government’s handling of Covid has been absolutely abhorrent but Captain Tom is an ordinary citizen like the rest of us and is no more of a tragedy than the other 100,000 victims.

Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 21:36

@DinosaurDiana

Not for me. I’d have loved a holiday abroad this winter but didn’t. Say no more.
Did you raise 35 million pounds for the NHS this year? Say no more...
MargotLovedTom1 · 02/02/2021 21:37

I'm not in mourning for him.

freedles · 02/02/2021 21:37

Not. A. Chance.

hansgrueber · 02/02/2021 21:37

@tatutata

He was old. He died. We all will.
If that's the extent of your philosophy don't give up the day job Sherlock.
DParse · 02/02/2021 21:39

WTAF?

A nation is not in mourning. I'm sorry for his family, but no more or less sorry than I am for anyone else whose nearest and dearest have died (either with or without Covid - Covid is an irrelevance when it comes to people dying).

I wasn't overwhelmed by Diana dying, either. Again, I was sorry for her family, but no more than that.

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 21:40

@RickiTarr

A statue is a great idea.
A statue of a member of NHS staff who has been working on the frontline, picked at random in some kind of lottery and chosen to represent the whole NHS response to the pandemic, would be better.
Wherediditgo · 02/02/2021 21:40

@FuzzyPuffling

I might be persuaded to clap for scientists though.
Yes!
Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 21:41

Sad and shameful that so many people on here have zero respect for a war veteran of this country who raised an incredible amount of money for our NHS. Shame on you.

How is not wanting to clap having 'zero respect'?
Travelledtheworld · 02/02/2021 21:42

anyone know how the money he raised was distributed ? My Sister
( nurse) has been given an NHS Hero badge, a free Costa coffee and something else (she runs a clinic ), but I don't know if that came via Caotain Tom ?

How does not clapping equal no respect? It’s virtue signalling and nothing more
Quit4me · 02/02/2021 21:42

@BackInNam

I get it may make us feel better in some way, but surely encouraging people to leave their houses, even just to clap on the doorstep, is risking an increased spread of the illness he died of? I'm not sure he would be happy with that...
Erm are you suggesting that people are at significant risk of covid on their doorstep?

Also, he didn’t die of covid

Captain Tom lived a long life and was allowed a dignified death surrounded by his most loved ones. He was 100 years and recently enjoyed a holiday with his family as well. Again, nothing against him but it isn’t a tragedy and the idea that the nation should all be collectively bawling over him is borderline offensive.

I agree. Also, the idea of a statue is ridiculous. He seemed like a nice man and he did some good things during his last year of life, but the amount of screen time his death is receiving you'd think he was royalty.

Also, there is a plus side to this... at least he won't be releasing another Christmas single! (Although I daresay Cliff Richard might... his voice died years ago but he doesn't know when to give it a rest.)

Don’t mix up not wanting to clap with not having any respect for someone who did a lot of good.
WalrusWife · 02/02/2021 21:44

Sadly, the world is a dark place. 15,000 children die every day, largely of preventable disease. 25,000 die from hunger every day.

DParse · 02/02/2021 21:44

A statue? FFS. I think I'm living in a parallel universe.

Doomsdayiscoming · 02/02/2021 21:45

I am going to show my respect by voting for a party that doesn’t decimate the NHS. It’s what Tom would want.

Zero respect - shown by not clapping?
