This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

Ilovemypantry - people have the right to think and feel whatever they want, despite what you think.

LunaHeather · 02/02/2021 21:45

@MissyB1

I wish people would stop all the virtue signalling. We can all pay our own private respects to this amazing man without having to prove it by standing on our doorsteps. If one more person asks me to clap for something I will clap them around the head!
😂😂
Sunnydays999 · 02/02/2021 21:46

No more clapping - and I work for the nhs

User133847 · 02/02/2021 21:46

I agree. Also, the idea of a statue is ridiculous. He seemed like a nice man and he did some good things during his last year of life, but the amount of screen time his death is receiving you'd think he was royalty.

I seen it mentioned for a hospital named in his honour which might be better than a statue.

@Ilovemypantry

Sad and shameful that so many people on here have zero respect for a war veteran of this country who raised an incredible amount of money for our NHS. Shame on you.
No, shame on successive governments who have underfunded our health service.

It's not about not respecting him but this hero worship is embarrassing.

Viviennemary · 02/02/2021 21:48

No more clapping. Captain Tom did a wonderful thing. He doesn't need clapping.

CommanderBurnham · 02/02/2021 21:48

I wouldn't clap, but I'd raise a glass.

Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 21:48

@Brunt0n
I didn’t mean because some people think that clapping isn’t a good idea. I’m talking about the general comments made which show lack of respect.

I had every respect for him.

I have zero respect for the grief vampires and virtue signallers trying to dictate what people should and shouldn't to in his memory, like they have some kind of right to speak on behalf of his family.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 21:49

Perhaps you could be more specific?

XenoBitch · 02/02/2021 21:49

@DParse

A statue? FFS. I think I'm living in a parallel universe.
Oops, I am one of several who suggested it in place of a clap. I thought it would be a little less worth cringe and virtue signalling. Saying that, I just peeked on FB and my newsfeed is pull of awful poetry and painted rocks with his image on. I make plushies and I would not be surprised if someone in one of the groups I am in comes up with a Sir Tom soft toy. I think I would be absolutely done at that point.
MargotLovedTom1 · 02/02/2021 21:49

Nothing to do with respect: I'm not mourning him because I didn't know him. He was an extremely elderly man who died. Condolences to his family. Quite frankly though, I'd rather have the clap than go down that clapping road again.

cantmakealifeofit · 02/02/2021 21:50

@User133847

A hospital or even just a ward being named after him, I could get behind. It actually makes sense and is less virtue signally than a statue. A statue would be inappropriate I think, when so many NHS workers are criminally underpaid.

Yes, of course people have the right to be disrespectful, doesn’t make it right.
Rockbird · 02/02/2021 21:51

God no, no more clapping or anything like it. I'm sure he was a lovely man, he did a great thing and condolences to his family. But over 1400 other people died today in the UK alone. We don't even know their names, but they were just as special to their families.

cantmakealifeofit · 02/02/2021 21:51

@XenoBitch.

I’d prepare yourself, some people will be seeing £ signs and ways to profit from this already.

ammary · 02/02/2021 21:52

I won't be clapping. It will not bring the country together.

TastyTicklemore · 02/02/2021 21:52

It's a no from me - just not my colour.

LemonSwan · 02/02/2021 21:53

I dont think its appropriate to clap someones passing.

KnobblyWand · 02/02/2021 21:53

If I was a member of his family I'd be absolutely fucking baffled by all this virtue signalling bullshit.

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 21:53

I would imagine somewhere right now the t shirts and teatowels are being printed and maybe a mug or two in production. Sad

Yes, see also trying to.position themselves as the guardians of Tom's memory and receive plaudits for arranging a clap / statue / whatever

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 21:54

@PurpleDaisies

It would be better if they opened up a specific place where people could donate to charity in his memory.

I don’t think people are up for clapping again.

That's a lovely idea

Would people really sink that low?

Probably best to give GMB/Lorraine/This Morning/Loose Women a swerve tomorrow. It will be relentless.
