I am beyond broken if this means we can't get to any kind of normality.

I think the poster above who suggested China helping get the third world vaccinated is really on to something. Would also be a great project for our tech billionaires who have profited so much from this chaos.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/01/2021 16:18

I think referring to it as stockpiling vaccine capacity is a bit rich when we have invested more than most other countries in both developing and producing vaccines and are working on building capacity to produce the vaccines we need here.
Vaccines aren’t a natural resource that exists in fixed quantities, they are something we are currently making shitloads of to stop people dying. 1200 people have been recorded as dying within 28 days of a positive test in the last 24 hours in the UK. 1200! The Guardian can fuck off.

FTMF30 · 30/01/2021 16:18

@Beaniecats

No. Sorry we need our lives and freedoms back. Now. So vaccinations have to proceed
Why are so many people under the impression that restrictions won't be lifted until everyone is vaccinated?Confused

The priority/urgency has always been about protecting the vulnerable.

Orangeblossom1977 · 30/01/2021 16:18

On a population levels surely having more people in general vaccinated is good in terms of protection of the vulnerable?

In the same way that it was not possible to just shield the vulnerable, everyone had to play their part.

It's not as simple as 'why should a young healthy person have one' is it really.

Perfect28 · 30/01/2021 16:19

@IrishMamaMia
And you seem to have an attitude more fitting of the colonial period. Help ourselves first so we can then help others? Lol.

We are no better than any other country. We are a global community facing a global crisis. Viruses do not respect borders or passports.

I get why you care more about people you know than those you don't but it's absolutely no good to think of ourselves as somehow different from the rest of the world. It's fairly analogous to climate change actually, the effects of which impact the poorest first but eventually screw us all over. We have one planet. That is our shared interest.
Personally I think that the naive thinking is from those who perceive ourselves to be seperate.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 16:19

Why are so many people under the impression that restrictions won't be lifted until everyone is vaccinated?

I thought because that have no idea re transmission & the vaccine won't prevent all deaths.

Affor · 30/01/2021 16:20

@Bookriddle

My wife has witnessed enough under 45s with no underlying health conditions die in the last few weeks!

I'm 28 I want my vaccine, asking as there is a risk I want it

Less than 400 people under the age of 60 without underlying health conditions have died since March 2020.
Rummikub · 30/01/2021 16:20

Post brexit though the U.K. govt want to build worldwide trade deals. Can’t have it both ways.
If the view isn’t global then travel will need to continue to be restricted. Risk of variants coming here is too high otherwise.

ChippyDucks150 · 30/01/2021 16:23

I work in a school, normally with hundreds of children attending. I also know a woman in her forties, with no underlying conditions, who died recently and has left a heartbroken husband and 5 children.

I want the fucking vaccine rolled out as planned.

lovelemoncurd · 30/01/2021 16:23

Why are we coming under so much fire at the moment for being efficient? I know plenty of 40 year olds who have been debilitated by this virus. I'm sure they want to be able to function normally and care for their young families!

Wildswim · 30/01/2021 16:23

My children and I have given up a year of our lives.

We need to get back to normal ASAP.

So, sorry no.

No more lockdown.

Floralapron · 30/01/2021 16:24

@marbellamarc they’re not keeping restrictions in place until there are zero deaths, why do people keep saying this?
There’s a flu jab every year and people still die of the flu!

Wildswim · 30/01/2021 16:24

Yes, both great ideas. Wink
IcedPurple · 30/01/2021 16:26

@Perfect28

Self centred, priotising (short sighted and misplaced) self interest, yes. Selfish. Inward looking. Nationalistic. Why should a healthy young person have a vaccine before an elderly vulnerable one on account of where they live?
Do you live on bread and water and donate all the money you save to poorer countries? Why should a healthy young person have excess food while others go hungry on account of where they live?
CheesePleaseLoueese · 30/01/2021 16:27

@Quartz2208

Its not quite as simple as that though is it - the biggest risk we have at the moment is a variant coming along and causing the vaccines we have/have given already to no longer work. The most obvious places for that to happen are those that have not yet started vaccinating.

Vaccinating Britain wont give us complete normality - it may give us New Zealand but they are not living in complete normal.

We need to do both - continue vaccinating whilst supporting COVAX. The Novovax and J&J vaccines will help with that as well

Exactly this.
Mintjulia · 30/01/2021 16:28

Given our levels of infection, we need to keep vaccinating the uk population. The UK can only help other countries once we able to re-open the economy and generate funds. Our medics can't help abroad if the NHS is on it's knees.

Rowenasemolina · 30/01/2021 16:29

@Bookriddle

Were they obese Please?
Aspiringmatriarch · 30/01/2021 16:30

What about further mutations of the virus? It's my understanding that the fewer people we vaccinate, the more likely they are to occur. So on that basis surely it's responsible to vaccinate as many people as possible in the UK given how densely populated we are. I'm sure people in developing countries won't appreciate having further, potentially more lethal forms of the virus to contend with. Not to mention, in terms of need we are a high priority due to our death rate. And we have invested in the Covax scheme to a greater degree than many other nations. I think we should crack on with the vaccine roll-out and give extra doses other countries when we can do so without putting our population at risk. For both selfish and pragmatic reasons wrt new variants, the prospect of which worries me a lot.

Aspiringmatriarch · 30/01/2021 16:32

And if they were, then what? Perhaps we should put the entire country on a compulsory emergency crash diet, or just shrug our shoulders and say the obese can die?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 16:32

they’re not keeping restrictions in place until there are zero deaths, why do people keep saying this?

I never said restrictions would stay in place that long but we will still have restrictions for some time. Why do you think otherwise?

Aspiringmatriarch · 30/01/2021 16:32

Sorry, that was to Rowenasemolina.
loveyouradvice · 30/01/2021 16:32

I HATE THIS.... you do realise that underlying conditions can be as simple as low thyroid or mlld asthma? Not normally life threatening conditions and certainly not disposable

midgedude · 30/01/2021 16:32

The virus mutates the fewer people worldwide who have not been vaccinated

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 16:35

@Floralapron

this is what I've read

If our understanding of the virus doesn't change, if the roll out of the vaccine programmes continues to be successful, if deaths start to fall, and critically if everyone plays their part by following the rules, then I hope that we can steadily move out of lockdown," the Prime Minister said.

They don't know & it's going to take some time to vaccinate the vulnerable/priority groups.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 16:36

I think mask wearing will continue for a long time for example.
