As far as England goes spec date wise

Monday 1st.
12264 added as compared with 16857 last week. After two days Monday at 15846 as compared with 20454 this time last week. Last Monday overall came just over 27000.

Sunday 31st
1315 added today as compared with 1760 last week. Sunday three day total now 13242 as compared with 14549 last week.
Sunday just gone maybe topping out at 14500 max

Saturday 30th
524 added today as compared with 736 last week. 4 day total 14718 as compared with 19361 this time last week.

Friday 29th
566 added today as compared with 170 last week. However Friday now totals 19558 significantly less than the 26656 at this time last week.

If I'm not too late, I predict 19201

The fact that the number of tests is creeping up due to the LFTs - will that be blunting the downward trend at all? How could we know?

MRex · 03/02/2021 16:34

More LFTs are very likely to lead to a higher proportion of cases, ideally a blip of higher rates for no more than 10 days (infecting household but not others). I guess we could look at the specific highlighted postcodes for the extra SA LFTs to see if they are varying out of proportion from their neighbouring MSOAs, but there were quite a few and I'm not sure how we separate than from the variant increases.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 03/02/2021 16:39

That makes sense, thanks. Would love to attempt the analysis if only there were more hours in the day!

MRex · 03/02/2021 16:39

We know Woking has one big focus area, I guess monitoring the positivity and test volumes, comparing last week with this week might give an idea? coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/testing?areaType=ltla&areaName=Woking

Hmmm, bit late...but very very close!
StrangerHereMyself · 03/02/2021 16:45

I’m pretty sure that Newscast said that the door to door testing was PCR not LFT?

JanuaryChill · 03/02/2021 16:59

Yes it's PCR ... which I heard being reported somewhere as "the 100% accurate tests" 😮 🤦🏻‍♀️

littleowl1 · 03/02/2021 17:01

The table of cases in each council in England and latest rates per 100K etc are updated on www.covidmessenger.com

Click the county column to sort and see a quick county snapshot.

I've also started a new mail list - I will send 2-3 emails a week with short, easy to digest analysis.

It's free and you can sign up on the homepage if interested!

Firefliess · 03/02/2021 17:05

More LFTs should mean that we're catching more of the asymptotic cases, which we'd previously have missed. As long as it's not masking a fall in lab based tests, I think it's a good thing (and may even mean cases are falling faster than the stats show)

We have seen a bit of a fall in PCR testing lately - I think the most likely explanation for this is that actual rates of Covid are falling so fewer people are going for tests - the rate of PCR testing has fallen less than case rates, I've heard no reports of people being unable to get tests, and we know that tests are coming back more quickly currently. But it is one to watch. There's clearly a risk of vaccinated people thinking their symptoms can't be Covid so not getting tested - DH was speaking to a friend yesterday who had started getting "bad side effects from the vaccine" a week after being vaccinated and didn't seem to have considered she might have Covid.

tootyfruitypickle · 03/02/2021 17:11

Chris Whitty's graph on the briefing now seems to indicate to me that 45-50 is not that much different to 50-54? Hope they extend to 40s after the 50s.

tootyfruitypickle · 03/02/2021 17:12

Outcome from hospitalisation I mean isn't much different

JanuaryChill · 03/02/2021 17:13

I'm a bit concerned that people are less likely to bother getting tested in lockdown - no school/employer/conscience re meeting up with others to tell them to.

Firefliess · 03/02/2021 17:16

@JanuaryChill

I'm a bit concerned that people are less likely to bother getting tested in lockdown - no school/employer/conscience re meeting up with others to tell them to.
If that was the case though we'd have seen a sudden drop in PCR tests at the start of lockdown though, rather than a gradual fall.
JanuaryChill · 03/02/2021 17:28

Ah OK, fair enough @Firefliess !

MarshaBradyo · 03/02/2021 17:32

Whitty doing well at briefing as per usual

Can you see this? Very interesting graph from this evening's briefing showing how vaccination should affect deaths and numbers in hospital

ceeveebee · 03/02/2021 17:50

I wonder why 40-44 year old women are less likely to be hospitalised than 35-39 or 30-34? I do take some comfort from this as I am in that age group!

slidingdrawers · 03/02/2021 17:52

Thank you for sharing that @Firefliess I found it interesting to see hospitalisation rates are significantly higher in women as compared to men in the under 40s. Impact of being a main carer to children and/or older family members, risk associated with occupation, increased likelihood of seeking medical care?

Firefliess · 03/02/2021 17:59

I wonder whether that could be women who are in hospital for maternity related reasons and just happen to have Covid, or catch it in there? Would explain the drop off in the over 40s that @Ceeveebies has just noticed

This might be a mad idea - and just because it's always on my mind at the moment! - but could it be because of pregnancy? Not just because of raised risk necessarily, since that seems to be fairly small, but also all maternity admissions are tested and so presumably would count if they tested positive?
Hardbackwriter · 03/02/2021 18:02

Cross-post, sorry, @Firefliess!

Firefliess · 03/02/2021 18:03

If I'm right though, it does highlight the need for better data on people in hospital because of severe Covid, and those who are there anyway.
