Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

@Bluethrough

They’re making complete dicks if themselves and rightly so, questions will be asked as to why they didn’t order earlier etc..

Think about that?
If they had, we'd now have less & they'd have more, the supply issues Az appear to have wouldn't have gone away.

No, it doesn't work that way. We had three months to ramp up production capability. That's what the EU is behind on.

Funny you should say that, I just fell down this rabbithole:

Doesn't surprise me. Wish I had those shares!!! Interesting reading the comments.

Let's not forget the constant assertions that we are the "laughing stock" of the world. No one seems to be laughing at us now do they? If they ever were.

I'm sure most people were way too busy worrying about their own governments' mistakes and shortcomings to spend too much time laughing at Britain.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 23:09

Yes but until about an hour ago Puzzle we didn't even have the bonus of the Novavax vaccine. Smile assuming it's approved Remember we have a vital component of the Pfizer vaccine. I hate this tit for tat thing but fuck it if the EU want to play hardball I think we should do the same. But hopefully it won't come to this, I don't want any EU citizens to suffer because of this row but don't give a toss about the EU itself.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2021 23:11

@Puzzledandpissedoff

ErrolTheDragon an awful thought just occurred ... the science is beyond me, but I see some of the components of the Novavax one are being made in europe

So I'm wondering if the EU could spike the company's guns by banning the export of these components to us?

It looked like they also being made in the US. And the partner manufacturer in the US is FDB, same as Teeside, so I'd have thought there's a fair chance they'd use the same suppliers.

The fact is, all this vaccine manufacture is a marvellous global enterprise with lots of pieces coming from all over, lots of inter-company agreements, lots of unprecedented cooperation.

Pixxie7 · 28/01/2021 23:11

This is a global pandemic so we vaccinate all British people and COVID continues to spread and mutates in Europe and the vaccine isn’t effective. Does that mean we can’t go abroad in case we bring it back so it never ends. I think we should aim to vaccinate all our vulnerable and then be prepared to help other countries out.

Motorina · 28/01/2021 23:14

Agreed - we should be pouring all the resources we can into Covax. It is both ethically correct, and pragmatic.

As should the EU. And the US, for that matter.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 23:14

I'm sure most people were way too busy worrying about their own governments' mistakes and shortcomings to spend too much time laughing at Britain.

Yes there were plenty of threads about this and I agree, why would the rest of world give a toss about the UK. Hopefully the vaccine development has raised our reputation in terms of our capabilities but really, the world does not revolve around the UK.

The irony is that the 'laughing stock' folks are themselves guilty of the 'British exceptionalism' they accuse others of.

Unless someone has a connection with the UK, why would they give a shit about what's happening there?

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 23:18

The irony is that the 'laughing stock' folks are themselves guilty of the 'British exceptionalism' they accuse others of.

Precisely.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 23:18

I think we should aim to vaccinate all our vulnerable and then be prepared to help other countries out.

And I don't believe our vulnerable are safe until as many people as possible are vaccinated.

3asAbird · 28/01/2021 23:18

I did some digging.

Is phizer in Europe producing anything in Europe right now for anyone?
Or are the factories shut down?

Not sure how many Oxford can deliver I thought they said reduced quantity so they have something go to Europe providing they approve it.
I guess Oxford AZ could remove its application until ema approval until this is resolved.

If norovax was signed late could take a while.
Moderna already know its later.
Johnson and Johnson on way but may take many month's.
Don't know anything about curevac and we know Sanofi very delayed so fear Europe won't get any vaccines until April or May as this rate.
This must make Europe feel very desperate which leads to more desperate measures.
I don't think this a is a threat they fully intend keep existing phizer stock hostage.

Backbee · 28/01/2021 23:18

That was the interesting part, the posters who kept posting about us being a laughing stock also repeatedly said how we are insignificant and no one gives a hoot about us- sure there's a bit of contradiction in there.

I do hope something is resolved as it isn't the fault of the citizens in the EU, but the powers that be have acted pathetically over this, and just made a divide rather than attempting to work together to achieve something. The irony is not lost on me.

Sunsun21 · 28/01/2021 23:19

We are all Only as healthy as our neighbours .

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 23:22

Does that mean we can’t go abroad

Yes, you can forget Italy or the Maldives for your summer holidays. Skegness here you come.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 23:23

I don't want any EU citizens to suffer because of this row but don't give a toss about the EU itself

My attitude exactly, though as said it's EU citizens' place to take this up with the organisation and not ours

And thanks to Errol and everyone else for the explanations about the component thing ... hopefully the EU involvement shouldn't create problems then

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2021 23:23

@PronounssheRa

I'm still a bit worried about some components of the Novavax one being made in europe though

Some of the components for Pfizer are made in Yorkshire. Im hoping cool heads prevail.

I think there is a good chance that a combination of the media and a small number of mouthy people are making the issue seem a much bigger one than it actually is. Hopefully those in authority will approach it with cool and pragmatic heads.
Backbee · 28/01/2021 23:24

And the US, for that matter.

To be fair they have given over $2 billion, and it was one of the first things Biden did when he took office (as trump had previously refused to be a part of it). As I understand it seperate deals are being done for agreement, and so there will be a guaranteed number for those countries in their own right, rather than counties donating vaccines when they have finished their programmes, although I'm sure that will also happen as part of the effort.

Backbee · 28/01/2021 23:25

Does that mean we can’t go abroad

A lot of people won't be able to afford it anyway...

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 23:25

I don't want any EU citizens to suffer because of this row but don't give a toss about the EU itself

Agree.

BelleHathor · 28/01/2021 23:27

@MRex I am hoping that the Government is currently COBRAing and has a plan in place to divert all the Pfizer for second shots utilising the Army if necessary. 🤞

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 23:28

I think there is a good chance that a combination of the media and a small number of mouthy people are making the issue seem a much bigger one than it actually is.

Mouthy people like the EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides?

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 23:29

Stella isn’t just some ‘mouthy person’. She holds a senior position within the EU.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 23:30

Skegness here you come

Maybe not Skeggy but actually I have a soft spot for Hull/Beverley/Spurn Head etc.
