Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

@Justanotherlurker
For buyers of the vaccine, however, there was a drawback because EU states face the prospect of paying the price of six doses for each vial, regardless of their ability to extract a sixth shot.

“We will fulfil our supply commitments in line with our existing agreements – which are based on delivery of doses, not vials – and in accordance with locally approved labelling,” Pfizer said after the EU drugs regulator’s decision to shift to a six-dose label.

You see, this Pfizer action alone should have been the heads-up to the EC not to play silly buggers with people who have better lawyers than yours. But no, they started on the next one. I await the next AZ step with interest.
@BelleHathor - it's true that it will worry some people and that's awful. I agree with MHRA/ JCVI on delaying the second dose to get more people vaccinated at minimal risk to original vaccinated people, BUT I worry that we shat on our chips as far as Pfizer are concerned by telling instead of discussing it with them. I expect they'll make good our order from elsewhere eventually, but worry we might be waiting a long while (and not even need it by then).

For contrast, DP are delighted because they wanted the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine but got Pfizer (slight mRNA nerves, though they went ahead), appear today to have happily decided that one of each is probably far superior anyway. DM suggests the NHS should offer anyone who got Pfizer to pick if they want second dose Pfizer or Oxford AZ, which might reduce the problem. (She doesn't seem remotely phased that this isn't tested.) Possibly not a bad idea if it comes to it, at least it might reduce the total number of people who are actively upset.
To be fair to your DP it will probably work just as well or better. We might find out if EU block Pfizer and all the boosters have to be AZ.

If i can get generic pain killers etc, Cv vaccine should also be treated in this way.

New drugs aren't available as generic versions as soon as they are released, there's a long wait.

Why should UK orders be prioritised, Cv doesn't prioritise

Because the UK ordered first. The EU haven't even approved the sodding vaccine yet so why should we be offering it to them as they may not even want it?

Wildswim · 28/01/2021 21:25

From Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in today's Telegraph:
"The UK and the US invested seven times as much public money per capita to accelerate the vaccine breakthrough, acting with war-time energy while the Commission remained stuck in its bureaucratic box-ticking subculture, catering to the lowest common denominator of 27 states.

Ouch.

BREAKING: Novavax Covid vaccine is 89% effective after trials
-Britain has 60million doses ordered
-Massive boost for Teeside where bulk will be produced...

Got to be approved now...

FOJN · 28/01/2021 21:27

Bookriddle

Hence the exclamation mark. Grin

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2021 21:27

Fergus Walsh @bbcferguswalsh
Breaking: Novavax Covid vaccine shows 89% efficacy in UK trials. Half the cases on the trial were the new ‘Kent’variant so this is first vaccine to show it is effective against the new more contagious variant

CrotchBurn · 28/01/2021 21:29

Wait what? Novavax? Is this a new vaccine?

MRex · 28/01/2021 21:29

Yeehaw! Awesome news! That should help settle nerves everywhere.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 28/01/2021 21:35

@redtootbrush is that the one dose one ? Or is that another one

MRex · 28/01/2021 21:38

No, that's Janssen by Johnson & Johnson, that one is expected soon.

Mrgrinch · 28/01/2021 21:41

This makes me pleased I voted Brexit. I always knew when shit hit the fan things would quickly change. One of the few things we have got right is these vaccinations and there's no chance of us giving them up.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/01/2021 21:42

I'm hoping the Janssen one will be approved for when I have it. As much as I want the vaccine I'd rather only go through the trauma of an injection once!

Boulshired · 28/01/2021 21:48

EU citizens must be thinking WTF, hopefully if approved as well as other and vaccines are created a surplus will happen. Especially as at this rate it will be time for next years vaccine program.

Empressofthemundane · 28/01/2021 21:52

Loads of good news starting to come through!

CrotchBurn · 28/01/2021 21:53

Well the EU have bought 200 million of these apparently so maybe they'll wind their neck in

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 21:56

Actually some of us came to that realisation years ago, but I take your point

@Puzzledandpissedoff Oh, absolutely.

PronounssheRa · 28/01/2021 21:57

@CrotchBurn

Have they? Im seeing suggestions the EU are only in exploratory talks for Novavax.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 21:58

Justanotherlurker I had to smile about Belgium asking the EU to hurry up procurement of syringes

They'll probably end up with enema ones or even the cake icing version Wink

@RedToothBrush Well that is good news. Have the EU ordered any I wonder?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 22:04

Have the EU ordered any I wonder?

100 million apparently, with an option for another amount the same

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 28/01/2021 22:05

Good news👍🏻

Not sure if EU have actually negotiated/completed a contract for this or not yet (article dated 17/12/20). At this rate we really will have to step up and help out.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN28R1HOThe

CrotchBurn · 28/01/2021 22:06

Why has the entire EU only ordered 100m and UK 60m?

3asAbird · 28/01/2021 22:07

@CrotchBurn

Well the EU have bought 200 million of these apparently so maybe they'll wind their neck in
Well all depends on when they ordered I how far behind uk and the actual European medical agency's giving approval for the vaccines to be given. Hopefully they approve more speedy at the Oxford AZ one!

Must say relieved the next 2 that maybe ready very shortly are being manufactured within the UK given latest debacle.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/13882266/novavax-covid-vaccine-89-effective/?utm_medium=browser_notifications&utm_source=pushly

I don't get why EU is not furious with phizer.
Apparently phizer made vaccines for Canada in Europe and shipped they have more than enough for their entire population.
Also I wonder where Israel doses were manufactured why they only moaning about UK.

I don't get if they not prepared to use AZ on over 65s then how are they vaccinating their most vulnerable elderly people in significant speed?
We can't possibly share until we got least all of over 50s but even then there's a lot of 40 year old in hospital.

Wonder how many valderna they have on order as assume its part french.
Surprised how much made in Belgium.
