Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

lovelemoncurd · 27/01/2021 13:48

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

Amusing (and staggeringly naive) how posters are saying we’d have been allowed to go our own way with the vaccine orders if we were still in the EU as well. We’re not even in the EU and they’re still putting a shit ton of pressure on us to hand over our vaccine. Imagine the pressure we’d have been under if we were still IN the EU!

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 28/01/2021 22:09

My link hasn’t worked for some reason but it’s a Reuters article dated 17/12/20 if anyone is interested.

Dongdingdong · 28/01/2021 22:12

100 million apparently, with an option for another amount the same

Well that’s good news for the EU! Let’s hope they don’t sue the company behind it if there’s a delay for any reason Hmm

IcedPurple · 28/01/2021 22:14

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Have the EU ordered any I wonder?

100 million apparently, with an option for another amount the same

They'll probably get around to approving it next October or so if they're feeling energised.

Massive boost for Teeside where bulk will be produced...

I think teeside is set to make 60 million which would be the U.K. order, but novovax is also going to be manufactured by the Serum Institute in India, somewhere in the Czech Republic, and also somewhere in Germany from what I can glean from a quick search. Maybe elsewhere.

Boulshired · 28/01/2021 22:16

According to the link it’s dated yesterday with New Zealand having a date of Mid 2021, no date on the EUs.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 28/01/2021 22:18

Liking the Minnie and Andy Pandy analogy!
There's some more milage there...

Motorina · 28/01/2021 22:18

I'm trying to find this and failing. Can anyone tell me:
*How many doses the UK has ordered of Novavax, and when the order was placed?
*Same for the EU?
*Where it's going to be manufactured?

Thank you!

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2021 22:20

The novavax will be manufactured in Teesside so availability of Pfizer will potentially be less important now. No idea of timescales though. It needs to be approved first. I think it is already in production.

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2021 22:21

Uk gov ordered 60 Million (it is a double dose so 30m people)
No idea about EU. Possibly not at all.

Motorina · 28/01/2021 22:21

Ahhhh, I'm seeing it will be made in Teeside. So, if the EU decides to put an embargo on exports of Pfizer, they might find that they're not the only ones holding a good run of cards.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 22:21

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Justanotherlurker I had to smile about Belgium asking the EU to hurry up procurement of syringes

They'll probably end up with enema ones or even the cake icing version Wink

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This article confirms the UK have ordered 60 million doses and that it will be manufactured in Teeside.

Where are all the posters who repeatedly said again and again, ‘give me one good reason for us leaving the EU, I still haven’t heard ONE good reason’ and ridiculing leavers who dared suggest that the red tape, bureaucracy and ‘one size fits all’ model was a fucking good reason?

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2021 22:22

EU are in talks to order novavax but have not ordered any yet. Uk ordered it in the summer.

Tbf the EU have ordered other vaccines that we haven’t.

Furries · 28/01/2021 22:23

@CaraDuneRedux

What I'm saying is that if EU signed up to "best efforts" not knowing that UK had a first dibs contractual obligation from AZ then I can see why EU would be pissed off, because the commitment to them is lesser than they believed it to be when they signed.

But surely normal business practice is that whatever contract you've signed with customer A is commercially sensitive, and customer B has no right to know what it is.

I need to re-read the article from the CEO again (or I may have seen it somewhere else, apologies for being vague), but I’m pretty sure it was mentioned that the EU would only receive vaccines produced in the U.K. p,ants once the auK order for 100 million had been met. After that, the UK plants could be used to produce orders for elsewhere.
PronounssheRa · 28/01/2021 22:23

UK agreements made in August last year. Production in the UK.

Not entirely clear on the EU situation.

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2021 22:24

@CrotchBurn

Why has the entire EU only ordered 100m and UK 60m?
The UK has order more vaccine per head of population than any other country.

It was the best way to hedge your bets in case vaccines didn't come through, were slow to be approved or had production issues.

Motorina · 28/01/2021 22:24

Thanks, @Frazzled2207 - we cross posted.

Yes, the superb Sanofi vaccine which isn't set to declare results for several months, if ever.

Vive la France!

FOJN · 28/01/2021 22:25

Amusing (and staggeringly naive) how posters are saying we’d have been allowed to go our own way with the vaccine orders if we were still in the EU as well.

Quite. Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands formed the Inclusive Vaccine Alliance and negotiated a preliminary agreement with AZ in June last year (at the same time as the UK), the commission intervened and insisted it was their job to negotiate for the whole bloc. Despite no material changes to the agreement it took them until August to sign contracts and the vaccine they're so upset about has STILL not been formally approved.

The EU has actually hindered rather than helped and individual countries were powerless to make their own arrangements. I'm grateful we're not in the same position as EU citizens.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2021 22:28

Here's some more info on where the novovax will be manufactured, though I'm not sure it gives timescales. I think because it's a small company which had some problems and actually had to close some of its own facilities in 2019 it has sought many partners,

ir.novavax.com/news-releases/news-release-details/novavax-announces-covid-19-vaccine-manufacturing-agreement-serum

And Baxter in Germany since then.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 22:29

🤦‍♀️

And are any of their other order apart from AZ and Pfizer which are delayed likely to happen?

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 28/01/2021 22:30

Dong ding, what's happening now, happened in micro cosm though with the horror at the battaclan.

The then French president said borders are closed and whilst he said that actually physically reeling in shock the terrorists were flitting over the borders Confused

Then eu person came on and his absolute first priority was insisting Borders were open Confused that's all he was worried about.

That said... One we are not a nation state any more, we can't act swiftly to protect our citizens, the other screamed... No matter what happens in the eu the ideology is more important than anything or anyone, the project is all...

Then, the da speigal (sp) report came out, claiming warning about guns from recent wars were being converted and sold to dubious people and were a huge worry...

That report sat on a burocrats desk for nigh on 7 years...
