Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 22:31

Must say relieved the next 2 that maybe ready very shortly are being manufactured within the UK given latest debacle

Absolutely

It also increases the chances of at least one of them being really effective, and means we could perhaps share after all (once our own jabs are done of course)

Just don't expect the EU to be grateful ... though it could open up some useful possibilities around trade deals and such Grin

CrotchBurn · 28/01/2021 22:34

@IcedPurple

Don't forget the pasteur fail.

Why isnt the EU and novavax situation clear? The item I linked to said they had been bought 2 days ago but theres no other info anywhere.

Apparently it will be made in Germany for the EU

PinkTonic · 28/01/2021 22:35
@Motorina I have great sympathy for those who are waiting on the Pfizer second jab. I’d hope that steps are being put in place to stop using it for first doses now in light of the news from the last few days so that they can preserve supply. It may already be happening, daily vaccination numbers are down over the last few days and withholding the Pfizer jab for usage on second doses is a plausible explanation.
I had my first dose today. Very pleased to have it, but very worried about getting a second now.

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2021 22:38

I find it quite staggering that there are suggestions those who got first shot of Pfizer might not get second. Surely there needs to be some kind of trial to do that? Agree that If there is any doubt at all they should suspend all 1st shots of Pfizer to ensure those getting 2nd shots are prioritised

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 22:39

Many experts seem to think its likely we will have to have an annual CV vaccine, meaning HI will be impossible, we will vaccinate only the vulnerable, maybe offering Cv to the over 50s as they did this year.

I thought with the annual flu jab we vaccinate young children with a nasal vaccine mostly to protect the elderly. I have a teen so no idea if this still happens.

And fantastic news about Novavax, for individuals and Teeside.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 22:42

I think if the EU are responsible for people in the UK not receiving their 2nd Pfizer jab the shit will really hit the fan. But with a vital component being made near Hull I think that is unlikely.

HelloThereMeHearties · 28/01/2021 22:42

@CrotchBurn

Well the EU have bought 200 million of these apparently so maybe they'll wind their neck in
Ah, but how long will it take them to approve it...
Justthebeerlighttoguide · 28/01/2021 22:44

Anyone can get the flu jab, it's peanuts from all major pharmacies! I've see people running rings and sweating and waiting till after flu season to get it free...yet its 8 to 13 pounds

I'd be more than than happy to pay for it!

Backbee · 28/01/2021 22:44

Amazing news on the new jab, and amazing we will be able to produce a load, partly for security but also how fantastic to be able to support more jobs.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 22:44

ErrolTheDragon an awful thought just occurred ... the science is beyond me, but I see some of the components of the Novavax one are being made in europe

So I'm wondering if the EU could spike the company's guns by banning the export of these components to us?

CherryCherries · 28/01/2021 22:47

I recall reading repeatedly on MN last year that the UK would be screwed regarding the vaccines for Covid if we left the EU and would be on the bottom of the list.. well the UK isn't quite as inadequate as pro EU voters make out. We even managed to create a vaccine on this small little Island.. not bad for a minor player on the world stage...

No we generally vacinate the older generation as young children are petri dishes allow herd immunity with the scientific knowledge of naturual recilliance, it is best to disregard the comment you are repling to though, they have been on some weird agenda and using speculative language such as 'many experts' with an air of authority, these types of posters when asked for data more often than not point to some op ed.

DamnUserName21 · 28/01/2021 22:50

Ah, but how long will it take them to approve it..

More quickly from now on, I'm guessing. God forbid, the UK gets ahead of the Block again.

I would love to have shares in vaccine pharmaceuticals right now with the amount of money being thrown at these companies. Grin

Funny you should say that, I just fell down this rabbithole:

Furries · 28/01/2021 22:53

@Bluethrough

They’re making complete dicks if themselves and rightly so, questions will be asked as to why they didn’t order earlier etc..

Think about that?
If they had, we'd now have less & they'd have more, the supply issues Az appear to have wouldn't have gone away.

No necessarily. The supply issues are scaling-up issues. Not just reliant on the equipment, but also The teams that are being trained in the exact process for manufacturing this vaccine. So issues are site/plant/team specific - and could be different combinations of issues at each specific site.

At the end of the day, it is not the UK’s fault that they placed their order earlier, had time to sort glitches before regulatory approval, and had a contract which stated that UK plants could be used for production for other countries ONCE our order had been fulfilled.

The fact the EU is dragging us into problems they see with their own contract is really not showing them in a good light. Their issue is with AZ, not the UK. And even though the issue is with AZ, they’ve gone about it in the wrong way - they’d better have a very clear-cut case with regards to “broken” contract, because otherwise they have just scored the biggest own goal possible.

And I can imagine multiple businesses (not just pharma) asking their legal experts to double-check their contracts, just to be on the safe side.

Justanotherlurker · 28/01/2021 22:56

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Justanotherlurker I had to smile about Belgium asking the EU to hurry up procurement of syringes

They'll probably end up with enema ones or even the cake icing version Wink

Well the EU are going to 'follow the science' with China's model of anal swabs, those enema ones could become vital!
Justthebeerlighttoguide · 28/01/2021 22:57

Damn

I inherited some of astra zeneka sharez and sold them.

Waspnest · 28/01/2021 22:58

Yes I think you're right. I've started to sort of remember which usernames are generally fair and informed and which ones ....aren't. (Only taken 14 years. but probably still quicker than the EU )

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 28/01/2021 22:58

If anal swabs are cheaper, but those at the 🔝 don't have to use them, they will grab them!!

After all the eu is a black hole of corruption they can't afford the best for their citizens.

Yup, and people were screaming when the UK declined to join the EU vaccine ordering programme last year...

Some of the components for Pfizer are made in Yorkshire. Im hoping cool heads prevail.

CrotchBurn · 28/01/2021 23:04

We can just get the components from America

Let's not forget the constant assertions that we are the "laughing stock" of the world. No one seems to be laughing at us now do they? If they ever were.
