Would you take your elderly mum to Sainsbury's

So I'm in such a quandary about this. My DM who is 81 has had both her jabs. She hasn't been out for weeks and weeks and I do her shopping each week when I do mine. She has told me she is coming with me to Sainsbury's next week as it will then be over a week since her booster. She knows she has to wear a mask, hand sanitise and socially distance etc.

I'm still not comfortable with taking her though. I've explained that they don't know if she can still transmit the virus but this is something she desperately wants to do, just to have a little bit of normality again and to be able to do her own shopping. She was very upset when I suggested she shouldn't come.

What would you do?

@Handcarthell

And ignore the request to stay at home and only go out WHEN NECESSARY

Shall we all ignore it?

Shopping for food comes under the essential category of the law and guidance. Shall we all make up our own rules that only affect other people?
tootyfruitypickle · 13/01/2021 10:14

Yes! Completely and utterly her choice.

tootyfruitypickle · 13/01/2021 10:15

An 81 year old vaccinated woman going to the supermarket is not going to infect anyone else. These are not the decisions driving the pandemic!!

Handcarthell · 13/01/2021 10:16

Ok let's all go every day to every supermarket and buy one thing in each shop shall we?

I'm off here now.

OP just do the right thing eh?

tootyfruitypickle · 13/01/2021 10:17

She’s not saying that she just wants to go and buy some food ?!! Just like I am sure you do?

Ffs.

This is not about what we WANT to do.

Its about what's NEEDED to get us out of this

What's the deal here? Just make up shit because your point is too weak?

zafferana · 13/01/2021 10:20

I've had an email from Sainsbury's this morning saying that everyone must shop alone from now on, so no you shouldn't take her.

They’re going in separately, aka alone.
DianaT1969 · 13/01/2021 10:21

People saying you must shop alone - they can enter separately and stay separate in he aisles. It isn't rocket science.

nottoday3000 · 13/01/2021 10:21

First of all thanks to all those who have supported the food retail workers and have supported us in a terrifying time. The rest of the idiots on this thread, just so you know... you're spotted a mile off if you think you are being clever by shopping separately you are wrong and security can be notified. It's so sad that your so selfish and put our lives and the rest of the workers and customers at unnecessary risk, I won't scare you with the sheer amount of staff off with covid you don't deserve to know .....op keep your mum at home regardless of the injection please unfortunately food retail workers aren't next on the list for the injection and heaven only knows why not ...remember stay at home save our lives as well please

charliespie · 13/01/2021 10:21

Actually it's about what we CAN do, and what is best for us as individuals, both physically and mentally.

What is absolutely is not about is what other people THINK we should be doing.

They are each doing their own shopping. OP has explained that. They won't be walking round together. They will be the same as any other two unrelated shoppers. The only difference is that they will have travelled in the same car.

I'll be amazed if anyone can pick holes in this, but knowing MN they absolutely will. Fwiw I can't believe how cheerful the supermarket workers stay, they must see so much selfish idiotic behaviour.

How dare you come along and call people idiots for defending a persons right to shop within the LAW. Fuck that shit. You are exactly the kind of jumped up jobsworth with a piss poor attitude I was talking about on yet another thread about older people going shopping.

FYI, I have been taking my Nanna shopping, she is 90. I do t and won't ever attempt to 'hide' the fact she is with me. Fuck that.

DianaT1969 · 13/01/2021 10:24

Anyone on this thread, who has had children at school, or who commutes to work, should really think twice before telling an 81 year vaccinated woman, who has been homebound for 10 months, that she has no right to go shopping in a supermarket, with a mask, on her own. With her daughter nearby. Take a hard look at yourselves.

TheKeatingFive · 13/01/2021 10:24

Oh fgs, no ones suggesting anything remotely like that.

Can you honestly say you have only gone to shops for strictly necessary purchases and when no delivery or click and collect options were possible to access?

Did you explore all options for doubling up on shopping with someone else to minimise everyone’s exposure?

MrsMiaWallis · 13/01/2021 10:24

tootyfruitypickle · 13/01/2021 10:25

@nottoday3000. OP and her mum are two different households. That is totally fine. They are filling different fridges . Independent people. They’re not somehow trying to evade the rules . Shes just giving her a lift .

Stop needlessly scaring OP with your security threats.

Your shop allows a certain number of people in at a time. The fact that OP and her DM travelled together makes no difference to that. They are no more risk to you than any other two people separately pushing their own trolleys around the shop, for good that will be used in their separate homes.. In fact OP's DM is less risk to you.

saraclara · 13/01/2021 10:25

tootyfruitypickle · 13/01/2021 10:26

@charliespie. Well said

charliespie · 13/01/2021 10:26

and there you go.

I know. I 'picked holes' as quickly as you wrote 'I'll be amazed if anyone can pick holes'

Perhaps the speed is an indicator that holes are not hidden 🤷🏻‍♀️

nottoday3000 · 13/01/2021 10:27

She then needs to do her daughters shopping as well as her own while her daughter waits in the car it's total and utterly unnecessary whilst been a prisoner in your own home isn't nice there will be ample opportunity to shop together further on, it's not about a change of scenery at the moment
