I'm sure I read that they have tested some of the vaccines against some of the new strains. Did I make that up?!

GoldenOmber · 16/01/2021 20:55

@alreadytaken

You are right - just England and sorry for omitting that.
Which is brilliant of course, because it means the real figure will be even higher. Glasgow just opened a new huge vaccine hub at the Louisa Jordan (temp nightingale hospital) and that alone was supposed to do 5000 vaccinations today.

Is anyone in Wales? Do we know what is happening there? It all seems a bit slow so far?

My mother and stepfather live in south Wales in their late 70s. So I am hoping things are happening there. They say not heard of anywhere near them started up yet.

@MarcelineMissouri

I think it’s a really common misconception that some groups of people either elderly or vulnerable are guaranteed to be seriously ill or die. Every you look there are stories from ecv people saying it was fairly mild for them or from people saying their elderly Nan just had a bit of a headache. From the repeated statistic that every 20 jabs in the over 80’s saves a life I’m assuming from that that in fact 19/20 over 80’s do not die from it anyway.

Very important to remember these things when it all feels like it’s pressing down on us. Lots of people are very ill simply because so many people have it - it’s not that the rates of death/serious illness are incredibly high. In addition it is still accepted that as many as 1 in 3 will have no symptoms at all.

Ah yes I forgot to mention my auntie who has COPD. She had Covid over Christmas and whilst she felt quite rough she didn't need any medical intervention and she's recovered fine now 😊

I think vaccine take up may be better than the survey.

A couple of months ago our grandparents were a definite no and a wait and see. Now one has had it and the other is waiting on the call!

tobee · 16/01/2021 21:49

Great news @TJ17 !

DMIL had a call earlier to go for her vaccine tomorrow!! She's 76 and in London!

That’s great that they changed their minds.

Not saying this is the reason per se for your grandparents, but I do think that the seriousness of this current wave will have been a wake up call for many who were sitting on the fence about it.

My friend is BAME, type 1 diabetic and 55. She had Covid, felt rough for a week but then recovered fully.

@tobee

I was just imagining a "stuff you are doing to cheer you during lockdown" thread. Starting off nicely and then posters coming on to say "you're not supposed to be cheered in lockdown, sorry. There's a pandemic on! People are dying! Stay the fuck home!"

Thank god for this (🤞) misery free zone. Smile

I just stupidly wondered on to one of the ‘when will things be normal’ threads. I just couldn’t believe what I was reading! Lots of “it’ll NEVER be the way it was” with the phrase “I’m afraid” thrown in here and there for good measure. I feel sorry for anyone who reads it and takes it seriously.

I’m currently working up to booking a UK break for August, just looking at Airbnbs in various places - Airbnb were so easy to get a refund from so they have my business 100pc from now on.

Think this must point to 24 hour vaccinations ? Which is completely right I think .

Just woke up to this news! Brilliant! They do seem to be really picking up the pace with vaccines now don't they.

Also, that's only with two approved vaccines. There'll be more approved and supplied by spring too.

I do feel that with cases slowing down (hospital admissions and deaths will take a couple of weeks to follow suit) and vaccines speeding up, we're beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Pomegranatespompom · 17/01/2021 08:53

@tootyfruitypickle oh I feel so cheered by that - so nice we are doing well with the vaccinations. 1 thing people can’t be negative about. I couldn’t be prouder.
I did my vaccine training (nhs) but they’ve had so many volunteers, I’ve not needed to go to clinic so far. People are amazing.

MarshaBradyo · 17/01/2021 09:21

Listening to radio hearing more about vaccine centres and people working there made me cry a bit. Really feel the collective surge to get us out if this. So grateful to everyone working so hard.

Just a reminder that it was politely requested upthread if posters could avoid the ‘my MIL is 78 and is having her vaccine tomorrow’ type posts. While it’s delightful to hear how many people are being invited for theirs, it’s distressing to those of us who are still very concerned about loved ones who are still waiting to hear. It’s clear there are huge disparities across the country which I’m sure will even out in the coming weeks but if we could avoid highlighting them that would be great.
