@MRex

Sunday 19th was 54,940 / 563. So it's worse for deaths Sad
I guess these deaths date from cases around New year when they were up in the 60/70k area Sad hopefully we will get similarly large drops in admissions and deaths start to come through in the next week
Madhairday · 17/01/2021 16:50

I was thinking the same thing. I am just glad deaths are under 1000 which is such a strange thing to say, considering any deaths are a bad thing.

Unfortunately Sundays and Mondays always report lower deaths due to weekend lags. The fact it's more than last Sunday isn't good tbh :(

Really good news on cases though and the covid messenger board is really heartening.

Quarantino · 17/01/2021 16:50

[quote Madhairday]Sorry if I've missed someone posting this, but it's a video from Jon Burns Murdoch at FT going through all the data and explaining why 'winter excess deaths' are not the same thing as excess deaths, so why we cannot compare say the 2018 flu season in the way many sceptics try to. I as someone who is not particularly adept with numbers found it very easy to understand and watch so thought it might be useful here.

Thirded, this is a useful video.

@littleowl1

The table of councils on the www.covidmessenger.com homepage is updated with today's data release.

Thankfully, the new barometer is holding firm: the number of councils with falling cases week-over-week still looking good today.

from that table although rates remain atrocious in the broader context:

the number of Councils with rates over 1,000 per 100,000 has dropped to 6; a week / ten days ago it was closer to 40

We've even got 1 council that has fallen to into double digits for its case rate, and a few more than look might they may be close to joining it.

So a widespread and positive downward case trajectory at the moment.

Sorry to be a downer, I am on the good news thread, and always post positive things on there, so haven't mentioned this anywhere else..... but re: deaths, half of mums care home passed away this week, about 10 of them, including DM and my Step Dad, they were there together and died within 2 days of each other. Such a shock, and just illustrative of how once it get's a hold in a care home, it can be devastating. None went to hospital, so all those deaths will catch up in the ONS stats.

@BigWoollyJumpers, so sorry xxx

PuzzledObserver · 17/01/2021 18:35

Sorry, @BigWoollyJumpers

It’s a similar story at the care home where DH works. He spent most of the couple of weeks before Christmas supervising family visits, after massive pressure for that to be allowed. They found their first case just after Christmas. Now 1/3 of the residents have died and most of the staff are/have been off work. Including DH, who gave it to me.

Our hunch is that it’s the new strain, because they maintained exactly the same procedures as they have all along. It doesn’t appear to be adequate any more.

So sad to hear about these care home outbreaks. Especially as they were so near to having their residents and staff vaccinated and potentially avoiding that scale of trajedy Sad Flowers

Firefliess · 17/01/2021 18:50

And suspect this is the main part of the answer to the question over why the over 80s case rate has been rising in contrast to other age groups. A more transmissible virus is not a threat if you work from home and hardly go out, but a huge threat if you live or work in a care home.
