How are people still catching the virus?

Numbers are still so high, are people catching it from supermarkets? Does 2 metres apart still stop you catching it? Are you still pretty safe outside if you stay at least 2 metres apart?

Schools seem to have been the worst place. Also, workplaces where people are neither socially distanced or masked.

2m apart is by far the best defence.

People sending their children to school with Covid symptoms be cause they are either ignorant or feel their need for childcare is more important. That's one example of how I have been exposed this week.

Bluebellpainting · 09/01/2021 19:47

I’m currently isolating awaiting my test result. If positive I will have probably got it from work- I work in a hospital and on my shifts last week I was seeing positive patients. I had the correct PPE on but that doesn’t include an FP3 mask. I’m not the only one of my colleagues off at the moment and there are concerns that our advised PPE is not protective enough for this new strain. The only other place I’ve been in the last 10 days was to pick up my click and collect so that is a possibility but on balance work seems much more likely.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/01/2021 19:49

Loads of people are still going out to work. I work in a factory and it would be easy to catch Covid in these conditions.

Baileysforchristmas · 09/01/2021 19:50

It’s frightening if PPE is now no protection against the virus

Naked scientist said today that a lot are with household, one person catches if and b then over the next week everyone else in the house catches it

Baileysforchristmas · 09/01/2021 19:51

I thought all schools are closed accept for key workers?

MarcelineMissouri · 09/01/2021 19:53

Well I haven’t had it YET but I still have to go to work and have close contact with around 40+ kids everyday sooooo.....

Some of us are just not actually able to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives as we have no choice in the matter and a huge amount of kids are still being sent in to schools. Doesn’t take a genius to work out how people might be catching it still does it??

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/01/2021 19:53

@Baileysforchristmas

They are but key worker uptake is much higher than the first lockdown so there are more children in.

This mostly, same as in the first lockdown. Workplaces and other environments will still be a major factor but generally it will work its way through households and group living situations.
Swishswish26 · 09/01/2021 19:54

Secondary schools have been closed for almost four weeks. They only opened to keyworkers on Monday so I really don’t think we can still blame schools.
I would guess there is a lot of non-compliance. People aren’t as scared as they were back in March. For the most part, they have seen family and friends catch the virus and recover quickly with only very mild symptoms, if any which is why we now have Whitty telling us to ‘Stay Home’ .

You didn't think a mask would protect you against a virus?

With all the face touching going on - i understand that - i think they might be doing more harm than good.
Jenny Harries mentioned that in March but it got ditched.

MarcelineMissouri · 09/01/2021 19:54

@Baileysforchristmas the list of jobs classed as key workers is huge. Plus vulnerable kids. My school of 450 has 200+ in every day now, compared to about 20/30 per day in the first lockdown.

School staff are very much still at risk and many schools are very much still open.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 09/01/2021 19:55

It doesn't stop COVID spreading in a school, just reduces the risk. We've already heard of 2 nearby schools closing keyworker bubbles. Both high schools and they have the students separated by year in small groups. In one of the school a pair of siblings came in whilst waiting for test results, which came back positive on Friday morning. I shudder to think about primaries that were in on Monday.

AcornAutumn · 09/01/2021 19:56

Also, it's a virus. If we all stayed home forever, it would infect people till it had run it's course.

starrynight19 · 09/01/2021 19:56

@Baileysforchristmas

Which means they aren’t closed as lots of primary schools have 50% or more of their children in so that’s most / all staff in school.

We are waiting to hear about a bubble popped in school.
My friend just tested positive she works in a children’s home. Lots of them have tested positive in the home.

TuxedoPantherSheHer · 09/01/2021 19:57

Schools aw still the major thing I think. Some schools are at over 50% attendance. Also people are breaking rules or interpreting them incorrectly.

I also think a lot of people are using PPE ineffectively (e.g. reusing disposable masks. not covering nose, not washing after every use). And the efficacy of different types of masks varies quite a lot.

ShizzleMyNizzle · 09/01/2021 19:57

My grandparents still need to be cared for. Now they have it.

ShizzleMyNizzle · 09/01/2021 19:58

For me it will be from the 20 people I share a classroom with daily.

ShizzleMyNizzle · 09/01/2021 19:58

My parents are pretty certain they got it from a supermarket as hadn’t been anywhere else.

ftb30 · 09/01/2021 19:59

I am in Essex. We've been tier 4 for weeks and now in lockdown. There's been no change. Shops and roads still busy and lots of people socialising outdoors. It's nothing like March lockdown

Not the case here. I'm a secondary teacher. We closed for Christmas for two weeks and back in with keyworkers and vulnerable kids on the 4th.

Where were schools closed for four weeks? By the way I was getting text messages telling me of kids testing positive for the first week of the holidays so school infections were still hitting families at that point.

AnnaBegins · 09/01/2021 19:59

The only people I know who have had it since November have caught it in the workplace where they are either prevented from distancing or the culture makes it "not cool" to do so. Only 1 person I know got it from teaching. All the others are quite open that their workplaces discourage distancing or home working.
Not certain we can continue to blame schools when they've been closed since 18th Dec...

Idontbelieveit12 · 09/01/2021 19:59

Plenty of people still having to go to work. Nurseries still open.

Bilgepumper · 09/01/2021 19:59

I listened to a hospital consultant saying many people are catching it in hospital. They come in with something else and end up with Covid.
