How are people still catching the virus?

Numbers are still so high, are people catching it from supermarkets? Does 2 metres apart still stop you catching it? Are you still pretty safe outside if you stay at least 2 metres apart?

OP posts:

@JinglingHellsBells

Most of that is outside so not the reason.

@Gwenhwyfar Sorry but you are mistaken if you think it can't be spread outside. Hmm

Of course it can be!

Do you not understand that the virus spreads through droplets, which are spread when people breath, talk, laugh, shout?

There is research showing that in a wind, it can spread 30 feet, so the 2mtrs guidance is just that- a guide.

Even masks only reduce the risk by a small amount as the particles can go through masks.

Most people also don't seem to know what 2 mtrs looks like.

I've seen too many people standing 1 mtr apart.

It is rare for it to be caught outside. If you know better, give us a few links.

I went to the supermarket today and felt that it wasn't as covid-safe as it could have been. In the first lockdown there were queues outside, as the numbers allowed in the store were limited, people were strongly discouraged from shopping in groups and customers seemed to be more aware of social distancing in the aisles. Today it just seemed to be a normal Saturday, loads of people in store, lots of families, kids not wearing masks (I know they don't have to wear them, but they can still transmit the virus), adults wearing masks with their noses out, people not giving others space or social distancing.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:45

" I overwhelmingly get told that a lot of people haven’t broken any rules and I’d say majority are right. However they would tell me that grin"

Of course. The person who said people had no reason to lie...
But I'm sure most are not lying and caught it through legal activities such as work that still has to go on, hospitals, care settings and then through the family.

m0therofdragons · 09/01/2021 20:45

Df just messaged saying her dh is at work at the army base and there’s no testing, no distancing and only occasional mask wearing. If one does get it the whole base will go down with them 🙄

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/01/2021 20:46

I know two people who’ve had positive test results today. Both teachers who haven’t been anywhere but (different) schools since before Christmas.

doireallyneedaname · 09/01/2021 20:46

Some data was released from track and trace showing that the most common last place to be visited by people that tested positive was the supermarket.

Aerosols are a big problem and aren’t talked about enough. Anywhere indoors is a big risk. 2 meters isn’t enough anywhere either, if someone exhales, coughs, sneezes, it’s been proven to travel further than 2 meters.

Yes, it's not nice I know, but I've read time and again that we shouldn't worry too much about people passing us quickly in the supermarket. I'm sure it's possible to catch it there and some people do, but I don't believe ALL the stories of 'I've only been to the supermarket'.
whensmynexthol1day · 09/01/2021 20:47

A family member of mine was sent from hospital with COVID and Told to get a taxi home or use public transport (had no other option- no one in household that drives and far too far to walk.) I was just flabbergasted that this was the case - I had imagined there would be some sort of transport provided.

toocold54 · 09/01/2021 20:50

I listened to a hospital consultant saying many people are catching it in hospital. They come in with something else and end up with Covid.

Someone I know has died from it recently. They worked in a school but was in hospital for 2 weeks but so they would have caught it from one of them.

Covidcovid · 09/01/2021 20:50

Schools were still open 5 days ago. So allowing for a lag for incubation I reckon still from that. Plenty of people still being told to go to work and mixing with colleagues.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:51

"Some data was released from track and trace showing that the most common last place to be visited by people that tested positive was the supermarket."

Yes, but if it's the same data I'm thinking of, it relied on people's own accounts, which may not be true, and also didn't show where people caught the virus - it might have been from a family member for example.

Yes, but the amount of time you stay somewhere is also important.

fireplaceburning · 09/01/2021 20:52

@Swishswish26 not here. School didn't break up until the 19th January and key worker children were in on the 5th January. Usual two week holiday

Where I live you have to go and get tested physically and there's no home/mail order tests so if no car, you take public transport.
AcornAutumn · 09/01/2021 20:55

@CremeEggThief

No I wasn't, Acorn. They were all together, I was on my own, about a 10 minute walk from were they were AND I have never previously seen anyone sledging there before, as I haven't walked over there in the heavy snow before.

AND who are you to imply whether I found it positive or negative anyway? I made an observation and spoke of it as an example. You chose to attach a value judgement to a neutral observation.

They might not at all have been together.

But apologies for assuming your view on it.

Porcupineintherough · 09/01/2021 20:55

Oh and it's doing the rounds of the care homes again. Teo friends of mine have lost parents in the last couple of weeks. Sad

TheFlis12345 · 09/01/2021 20:55

Stupid things I saw today include a load of blokes who had ignored the closure signs, pulled the fencing aside and were working out at an outdoor gym in the park, groups of a dozen parents stood together chatting while their kids played at a playground, a group of teens all getting on Boris bikes without sanitising them or their hands, and a group of 10 people in their early 20’s playing frisbee. And that’s without even going into the dozens not even attempting to social distance on paths.

Shudawuda · 09/01/2021 20:55

Tinder if my idiot friend is a anything to go by.

Swishswish26 · 09/01/2021 20:56

@fireplaceburning assuming you mean 19th December? That was a Saturday so I doubt it. Anyway I’m sure people will still be blaming schools in the weeks and months to come. Heaven forbid it could be coming from anywhere else.

As the supermarket is one of the few places most people can go, if there were any data it would almost certainly show that the most common last place to be visited by people that tested negative, or had no reason to test, would also be the supermarket.

Just because you've been to a place it doesn't mean you caught Covid there, but it's a very handy place to blame when you don't want to admit to an illicit meeting.

And I would guess that the sort of person who prides her/himself on being a rule follower, would be particularly likely to wish to conceal a 'one off' transgression.

benedicto · 09/01/2021 20:57

Public transport in urban areas. People are being required to go to work in non-essential businesses, some of them use public transport to get there and some of them will be exposed to the virus at work as well.

In hospitals - staff and patients. A hospital with hundreds of Covid patients is not going to be safe for anyone. I am bemused that outpatients are running in these same hospitals for non-emergency appointments (I know not same part of building, need to clear waiting lists etc, but this is a highly contagious new variant).

Not on walks in the countryside for certain.

Unsure33 · 09/01/2021 20:58

Ones I know ...workplace .

But as previously mentioned once it is in household seems to spread to everyone more quickly .

benedicto · 09/01/2021 20:58

Christmas - 44% of the population took up the government's relaxation of restrictions to mix households indoors.
That was 2 weeks ago - correlating perfectly with the current increase in case numbers and hospitalisations. To be followed in a week or two by another big increase in deaths.

FightingWithTheWind · 09/01/2021 20:58

Some examples I've seen/heard today alone:
a woman I know - who works with vulnerable people - stating that she will not get the vaccine even though she has been offered it, and that she thinks the whole world is over reacting.
3 people ok my facebook posting conspiracy theories.
Multiple groups of people huddled together whilst I was walking to work.
I work in a take-away, every day we have customers placing very large orders (for 10+ people), customers trying to move the perspex screen between us to take their order from our hands rather than the table, customers fitting their face through the gap either side of the screen/over the top of the screen and removing their mask to talk to us, customers complaining about our contact free policy and some of the people who I work with are also very careless with social distancing as well.

I am in Essex, it really doesn't surprise me how high the numbers are.

PaddingtonsSister · 09/01/2021 20:58

Work because as People having to work because their managers want them in
Schools because schools have to take so many children
Nurserys

Irishgal20 · 09/01/2021 20:59

@JEE87
I agree, some people are not isolating as they think they ‘just’ have a cold, sore throat etc but in fact it turns out to be Covid so therefore they have more than likely passed it on without realising.
