How are people still catching the virus?

Numbers are still so high, are people catching it from supermarkets? Does 2 metres apart still stop you catching it? Are you still pretty safe outside if you stay at least 2 metres apart?

The current lockdown only started 4 full days ago so it's still a bit early to judge whether the current measures are adequate

A lot of the people testing positive in past few days may have caught it before the lockdown started (or caught it from a member of their household/bubble who caught it before lockdown started)

starrynight19 · 09/01/2021 20:00

Schools have only closed for two weeks over Christmas not four.

10storeylovesong · 09/01/2021 20:01

I'm a police officer. One of our response teams, a team of 25 officers, has just had 4 test positive and 13 are now isolating.

felicitywishdoll · 09/01/2021 20:01

Some workplaces, I noticed when getting a drive-thru at McDonald’s the staff are all working quite close together, if you think how many branches of McDs are operating across the UK each with dozens of staff members. Ditto Dominos Pizza, you can see them working through the window in my town and the kitchen area is cramped with them all squished in together.

Baileysforchristmas · 09/01/2021 20:02

So hopefully as long as me and my family stay 2 metres apart from everyone and sanitize our hands we shouldn’t catch it? It’s freaking me out a bit when people on here are saying they are catching it and haven’t been out since March, they think they have caught it of the delivery driver or there shopping.

It’s only 9 days since New year. Lots of people were mixing over Xmas and New Year..

SquirmOfEels · 09/01/2021 20:03

It's probably more transmissible outdoors than people allow for, especially in cool damp weather. So stopping for a chat with a friend/neighbour you happen to bump in to might not be safe, especially as there seems to be a heck of a lot of underestimating how far 2m actually is.

And anti-mask/it's all a hoax demos like the one today in Clapham probably don't help. Not when the estimates of how many in the capital are infected are at 1 in 20, and the people who are prepared to gathe rlike thta are probably mixing in all sorts of other circumstances too.

AcornAutumn · 09/01/2021 20:04

@Bilgepumper

I listened to a hospital consultant saying many people are catching it in hospital. They come in with something else and end up with Covid.
This is a huge proportion.

And yet, the people I know who were hospitalised with Covid were all on open bays.

Life can't stop. I took my mum to be vaccinated today. She can't go alone. I took the Tube to her place and we took a cab to the centre.

Lots of people have to use public transport for work and caring duties.

CremeEggThief · 09/01/2021 20:05

Far too many of us still having to go to work.

Public transport where social distancing and mask wearing for the whole journey aren't being enforced properly.

Too many people still mixing. I went for a walk on my own along the edge of a popular recreation field this afternoon, but there were 20-40 people sledging down the hills. To be fair to them, they all had some distance between them, but it looked like a mini- Winter Olympics!

Swishswish26 · 09/01/2021 20:07

@TheHoneyBadger sorry yes, schools have been closed for three weeks, not four. All the same, my DS finished school on Thursday 17th December so 23 days ago, as did the majority of secondary schools. I can’t think how that is still contributing to today’s infection rates.

AcornAutumn · 09/01/2021 20:08

Creme you were there too.

Outdoor sledging seems a reasonable activity at the mo.

Persianparadise · 09/01/2021 20:08

I have known 5 people all youngsters aged approx 19-26 who have had it but not known it. Only got tested through work. People aren’t taking it seriously enough, supermarkets are still busy, people not wearing masks, going out for non essentials.

bigbluebus · 09/01/2021 20:09

I've just seen a post on Facebook from someone who drove to our county town today and was dismayed to see that town was heaving. What on earth are people doing - there's no supermarkets in the town centre.

Kazzyhoward · 09/01/2021 20:09

@Bilgepumper

That's a very brave NHS worker finally telling the public the reality of the situation. Nearly everyone I know who has caught covid, has caught it in a hospital or care home. Those in hospital caught in whilst they were in-patients, and hadn't taken in it with them. Sadly, some staff really don't understand about cross contamination and basic hygiene. That was highlighted a few years ago re doctors & nurses moving from patient to patient without washing their hands, and wearing long sleeves. My OH goes to a day treatment centre for his cancer treatment and nearly every time has to remind the nurse to change her gloves and wipe the blood pressure cuff and finger oxymeter as they go from patient to patient. Some staff still havn't got the message!
Al1langdownthecleghole · 09/01/2021 20:11

We've been careful for months to protect a family member.
They were then admitted to hospital, caught covid and have been sent home to us.

Currently isolating & hoping. But wanted to say sometimes circumstances are beyond our control.

arthurdaly · 09/01/2021 20:12

DH caught it from work. He was working on a site and the owner was there, the owner had to do a lateral flow test to return to work as a teacher on Monday just gone and tested positive. He had no symptoms.
DH had a bit of a cough so booked a test and positive, same for me on Tuesday.
If the owner hadn't tested we would never have known and neither would he.

GabsAlot · 09/01/2021 20:12

@ftb30

I am in Essex. We've been tier 4 for weeks and now in lockdown. There's been no change. Shops and roads still busy and lots of people socialising outdoors. It's nothing like March lockdown
so am i have noticed the same it was so quiet a year ago now it seems like people just dont care and its 1 in 18 here too
Maverickess · 09/01/2021 20:12

If I get it, although it's far more likely to be when, the prime candidates would be work or public transport.

Work because my colleagues children are at school as they need the childcare to be able to come to work, we all wear ppe because we want to protect the vulnerable people we work with and each other, but it's not foolproof and care homes are not designed to keep everyone in sterile isolation despite our best efforts, and we have dementia patients that wander, short of physical or pharmaceutical restraint, It's pretty much impossible to stop that completely. We also need support from nurses, doctors and other proffessionals that need to come in, even though as much as possible is done virtually. We've had 4 staff cases, 3 of them had children that were in popped school bubbles and who caught it from them, one their partner tested positive on their routine asymptomatic test. Then any new admissions we get too, less risk now with lateral flow tests being faster but obviously not as accurate.

Public transport because unfortunately there's a lot of people still using it at the moment as more is open, and people coughing, sneezing etc while not wearing masks correctly or at all. The Windows should be open but at this time of year they're being closed again. I wear a mask, sanitize etc but those are the places for me I'd say are higher risk.

SunKeepsShining · 09/01/2021 20:13

The amount of people with kids still in school.

Hospital staff only wearing surgical masks and no FFP3 masks/respirators.

Supermarkets.

Coffee shops for takeaway.

People believing outside is a magic forcefield so getting well under 2m. (Can still catch it at 2m outside)

People still meeting up to let their kids play together in the park.

Schools - necessary evil for key workers kids but some are nearly at capacity

People believing that the vaccine gives you a forcefield and not realising you can still catch it and you will still catch it and get it mildly

CremeEggThief · 09/01/2021 20:13

No I wasn't, Acorn. They were all together, I was on my own, about a 10 minute walk from were they were AND I have never previously seen anyone sledging there before, as I haven't walked over there in the heavy snow before.

AND who are you to imply whether I found it positive or negative anyway? I made an observation and spoke of it as an example. You chose to attach a value judgement to a neutral observation.

Whodofthunk · 09/01/2021 20:13

So many workplaces expecting their staff in when they could wfh. This also has an impact on early years settings as parents will still be sending their kids to nursery in this case and staff there are not even in ppe.

Schools are still seeing lots of kids in.

For the most part you are still only officially eligible for a test with a cough/fever/taste change and none of the people I have known with a confirmed case actually started off with these symptoms.

GabsAlot · 09/01/2021 20:14

also my dh who has to travel into work on the train says loads of people arent wearing a mask even less than when we first had to

GypsyLee · 09/01/2021 20:14

schools, nurseries, costa and Starbucks (however did we manage before) TAKE A FLASK or wait the short time it takes to get home.
Everywhere that should be closed, basically.

SunKeepsShining · 09/01/2021 20:14

Oh, and workplaces thinking they are covid safe with people thinking it’s fine to talk in a room with no ventilation sitting 1m apart when they have those choice or face the sack.

Covid marshals in the street believing outdoors is magical and getting within 1m of everyone they talk to, without wearing a fucking mask!

chubbycheese · 09/01/2021 20:17

I work in a dentist, we are all still at work and we have people ringing up trying to get their whole family booked in for a check up... I don't think people are as scared/ taking it as seriously this time round.
