How are people still catching the virus?

Numbers are still so high, are people catching it from supermarkets? Does 2 metres apart still stop you catching it? Are you still pretty safe outside if you stay at least 2 metres apart?

@ScrumptiousBears

People are not staying at home. They are manipulating the guidelines to suit themselves. You only have to drive though a town centre to find the world and his wife walking round shut shops and standing chatting outside coffee shops. Dog walkers meeting. Families in parks. Whole families wandering round those shops that are open "because they are open so I can". Meeting that one person (but a different person) every day. Numerous bubbles that change to suit. It's all bollocks.
Most of that is outside so not the reason.
Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:33
@Gwenhwyfar 🙄 we know them well and they have no reason to lie. They are stickler for the rules so I have no reason not to believe them
Fair enough. I know someone else who thinks he got it from the supermarket too, but most of the second and third hand stories I hear about people who never went out, but touched a takeaway container, I'm very sceptical about.

Ffsnosexallowed · 09/01/2021 20:33

Its pretty worrying if the main source of infections is school - given that those kids are going back into key workers homes. Here's hoping vaccination helps

mummabubs · 09/01/2021 20:34

I agree that unfortunately people just aren't treating the current lockdown as seriously as they did back in March. Just went to do our essential shop and the supermarket was packed, no one distancing, I lost count of the number of people I saw with masks around their chin or below their noses and then when someone stood literally right next to me to queue and I politely asked him and his wife to stand back on the 2m marker behind me they refused. The checkout staff watched this and said nothing, I'm very clearly pregnant and to be honest it's put me off going to my nearest supermarket, even though I'm trying not to travel any further than necessary. (Unable to get a home delivery slot before that is suggested!)

allmycats · 09/01/2021 20:34

So many workplaces making as little effort as possible. Warehouses where they are not social distancing, wearing masks, or keeping clean. Had to actually go in to a solicitors practice just before Christmas. Guy at Reception not wearing a mask leaning right into our faces to take temperatures. No one in the building was wearing a mask, and no one was wiping down door handles etc. behind us. They said we could take our masks off and were surprised when we .kept them on. They passed us their pens to sign documents and thought it odd that we had brought our own. Been out walking locally today. Groups of mixed ages and groups of young people out together, the younger groups jumping on each other, arm linking etc. One group of mixed age group passing cabs of pop around. There is no bloody hope.

PinkFondantFancy · 09/01/2021 20:34

It's spreading like crazy in hospitals.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:34

@GabsAlot

Gwen theyve been told not to as they get harrassed/threatened

chubbycheese my dsis works in a dentist same there people ringing up for heck ups which arent necessary although i blame the owners for that

Then they should call the police. Where I am the situation is not perfect e.g. a train guard will say put your mask on and the person will put their mask on just when the guard is watching, but the train companies and the supermarkets don't just refuse to enforce the rules.

People developing symptoms and getting tested from all those NYE gatherings only 9 days ago.

The Great Christmas Loophole and everyone making up far-fetched versions of bubbles etc. Or just ignoring the instructions.

Once one person in a household gets it in this way, then there is a time lag before the other 4 people (for example) in the household get it.

If I got it it would be from going on a lone walk in the park and big groups of people stopping in the middle of the path, turning round and coming face to face with me while shouting at their friends and children.

The post office queue last week had no-one wearing a mask, the assistant was not wearing a mask, there was no social distancing in the queue and the counter is at the back of a long, low-ceilinged, fetid, non-ventilated shop. (I went home and didn't post my parcel).

Bluewavescrashing · 09/01/2021 20:35

Schools aren't closed, just open to reduced numbers. I'm a primary teacher in school every day teaching my bubble of 23 or planning, videoing, marking, uploading adapting lessons for home learning. I have supermarket deliveries and don't go out to the shops for anything else so my workplace will be the riskiest place for me.

Scaredykittycat · 09/01/2021 20:35

Two of my friends have it, follow all the rules. Don’t know where they’ve got it from so can only assume the shops they’ve visited for their weekly shop!

Irishgal20 · 09/01/2021 20:36

Also some of the symptoms are not classic Covid. Some people I know that have tested positive have a a cold, headache, aches and only a slight cough. No continuous cough, no temperature, no loss of taste.

PinkFondantFancy · 09/01/2021 20:36

Also generally viruses tend to just do their thing, think that's what we're seeing. I don't think you can necessarily blame others. Everyone I know has curtailed their lives so much that it's a tiny shadow of the amount of mixing they used to do. The commuter trains to London were insanely crowded every day. The vast majority of those are now working from home.

ScrumptiousBears · 09/01/2021 20:36

@Gwenhwyfar You say that but there's still no distancing. Being outside is not the magic answer. Oh we can all go outside and we will be ok. No clearly we will not. STAY AT HOME.

ScrumptiousBears · 09/01/2021 20:37

People making excuses everytime 🙄

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:37

Headache is a typical symptom. The NHS has a strange list of symptoms that I don't think other countries follow, maybe to do with a lack of tests.
PinkFondantFancy · 09/01/2021 20:38

My friends that have it have seen noone. Don't go further than the supermarket. Super super careful. It's bizarre

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:38

Catching it outside is very rare. That is what the research is telling us at the moment. You don't know better, unless you have done your own research.

amicissimma · 09/01/2021 20:38

Of the people I know who have caught it lately it has either been off older teen or adult DC who have been out partying, or meeting up, or, mainly, from hospital.

Apparently the partying DC tell test and trace that they've only been to the supermarket, so would have caught it from there, although generally they don't in fact go to supermarkets. Only their parents tell the truth, but that is later and not really relevant as the parents caught it at home.

JEE87 · 09/01/2021 20:38

I think it's because a lot of people that are testing positive don't have the main 3 symptoms! I've known lots of people that have had the following
Headache
Sore throat
Sinus pain
Body aches
Leg pains!!
Vertigo

And if people have just got a head cold because it's not the main 3 symptoms they are just going about doing normal day to day stuff which you can't blame them!
In I know lots of people that have tested positive & not one of them have had any of the 3 symptoms!!
So that's why I think it's spreading! I think the government need to change the guidance on the symptoms & maybe if you don't feel well you stay in & get tested

queenofthelamas · 09/01/2021 20:39

If it take about 10-14 days to manifest then Christmas mixing happened 2 weeks ago. Before that it was schools (which made the Christmas mixing period worse).
Key worker places in schools have a much much higher uptake as well

Timeturnerplease · 09/01/2021 20:40

Schools are essentially 20-75% open. No social distancing or masks.

Remmy123 · 09/01/2021 20:40

Loads of people mixed over Christmas - too much of a coincidence that a few weeks later cases are sky high

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 20:41

"They passed us their pens to sign documents and thought it odd that we had brought our own. "

Or you could sanitise your hands afterwards.
Isn't it the law to have masks on inside public buildings? Does that not include offices then?

JinglingHellsBells · 09/01/2021 20:42

Most of that is outside so not the reason.

@Gwenhwyfar Sorry but you are mistaken if you think it can't be spread outside. Hmm

Of course it can be!

Do you not understand that the virus spreads through droplets, which are spread when people breath, talk, laugh, shout?

There is research showing that in a wind, it can spread 30 feet, so the 2mtrs guidance is just that- a guide.

Even masks only reduce the risk by a small amount as the particles can go through masks.

Most people also don't seem to know what 2 mtrs looks like.

I've seen too many people standing 1 mtr apart.

Coffeeandaride · 09/01/2021 20:43

From the people I examined yesterday
One was a little child who got it from working parent
One thinks from wife who is district nurse
One got it from MIL who is elderly and frail and carer tested +ve the week of Christmas
One got it from adult son, not sure where he got it
One person where whole household affected - grandparents, siblings, wife and kids
Two got it from work colleague

The others I can’t remember. I didn’t ask specifically but it comes up sometimes when trying to work out what day they are into it. I overwhelmingly get told that a lot of people haven’t broken any rules and I’d say majority are right. However they would tell me that Grin
