timescale for non vulnerable under 50s being offered the vaccine?

Earlgrey666 · 09/01/2021 08:52

I wondered if there is an estimation of timescale for the above? I have searched but can't find any information on this.

I have friends in their 30s/40s with no underlying health conditions expecting to be offered the vaccine this Spring and I think they are being very optimistic!

@happinessischocolate I understand but the quantitative data shows that it IS rare. Of course it will happen but it is very rare. And that is when a lot of people will balance that against being locked away for a year. They just will.

tootyfruitypickle · 10/01/2021 09:41

Hancock has just said that everybody over the age of 18 will be vaccinated by the autumn.

NaughtipussMaximus · 10/01/2021 09:41

especially if new variants are shown to affect increasingly younger people rather than just those over 80 (this is in fact currently happening, just ask any staff member in a hospital).

This isn’t currently happening. There are more young people infected but proportionately young people aren’t being affected more seriously with this variant: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55586994

My in law's brother in his 50s has just died after contracting Covid in hospital.
Two teacher friends in their 40s and 50s in hospital, clots on lungs.
I know others, in their 40s and fairly fit, who've really struggled - my own 14 year old did and he normally runs cross country.

You've only got to read on here that it isn't rare, sadly.
For those of us in high risk areas, it feels a case of when we get it, not if.

Where did he say this?
Blessex · 10/01/2021 09:51

@middleager but it IS rare! The data shows it is rare. I am very sorry you know some of those people but that doesn’t negate the fact that it is still rare.

Blessex · 10/01/2021 09:52

@daisypond he just said it on Andrew Marr. He said everybody over the age of 18 would be offered the vaccine by the autumn.

thebestnamehere · 10/01/2021 09:55

@BellsaRinging

Well I'm 47 and according to the calculator can expect my first dose between july and september and the second by december. I could cry. If that's what they're saying now then I predict it'll be even later. Another year of this? I actually dont think I can. No holidays. No seeing friends and family. Just work and homeschooling? I've spent the last year being super careful, restricting contact, not having any fun. Another fucking year?
But, with all the kindness from me - it still won't mean you can happily galavant all over the place seeing whoever you want
tootyfruitypickle · 10/01/2021 09:58

@daisypond he just said it on the Andrew Marr show. Was unequivocal- it’s definitely the plan

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/01/2021 10:04

DP is priority no. 6. All I care about is when he’ll be called. I can wait years or never.

And conversely I can tell you what I know no one who has died. I can give you a large list of people I know who have contracted it, but no one that’s died of it.

My biggest worry is that the vaccination program is so slow that we allow the virus to mutate further, to the point that the current vaccines are not effective against the mutants. Increasing the time between the doses (such as the plan for the Pfizer vaccine) makes this more likely. I believe they should have data now showing if the Pfizer/AZ/Moderna jabs are effective against the "super spreader" now but the SA strain maybe structurally more diverse and hence current therapies less effective (hence the SA travel restrictions). But I'm not sure modifying the vaccine to engage with future mutant will require full trials again (based on the flu programs).

Speed and take-up is the issue. And putting this in the hands of Matt and Boris terrifies me.

BerlinCalling · 10/01/2021 10:15

I'm in my 40s, perfectly healthy and wfh but I'll be getting it by the end of January because I work for the NHS. 🤷‍♀️

That can be your worry and yet that isn’t what’s happening. That’s your fear as to what could happen which is entirely different to the reality.

I don’t know if you watched last weeks press conference with BJ, CW and PV? They covered this point and it certainly made me feel less anxious.

Blessex · 10/01/2021 10:32

@didireallysaythat the Pfizer vaccine is now known to be effective against both the new strain here and the one from South Africa. The scientists will have definitely taken what you are saying into account and then would have made a decision to have a longer break based on balancing this off vs giving one dose to more people quicker.

The death part is rare based in the stats. However do we really know whether the health issues are rare. How much data do we know about those becoming ill with it.

I am 47y, teach and I am cv. However my 'underlying condition' is due to something that I wouldn't be expected to die from have a reduced life expectancy.

I ended up in hospital with covid. It caused my blood pressure to reach dangerously high levels so that I was at risk of heart attack or stroke. I was investigated for blood clots on my lungs and other related issues. I am left, 3.5 months on, with high blood pressure, which even in full whack medication is still in the stage 1/2 hypertension levels.

But is this kind of covid-related health issue actually being monitored and reported on?

Is it? That is great news!

@Mousehole10 so Pfizer definitely effective against the common mutation in both the U.K. and South Africa strain. They still need to do a final check on a second mutation in the South Africa strain but highly likely to be fine and even if it isn’t they can tweak the vaccine for it. I am trying to stay as calm as possible.

chloworm · 10/01/2021 11:32

It's going to become another Boomer thing isn't it? I absolutely don't begrudge anyone the vaccine. However I can just imagine the resentment if older people start going on holiday, restaurants, seeing friends etc. and the under 50s just can't or won't for fear of becoming ill. Also younger people who will be saddled with the financial mess, disruption to education and shrinking jobs market will be furious (who can blame them?) I don't know about others but I've got to the point where expecting the worse case scenario is better than hope being snatched away AGAIN.

benedicto · 10/01/2021 11:39

Doctors are now saying that if you are young and non-vulnerable and do not qualify for the vaccine you should stay at home until you have had the vaccine.

Prof. Jeremy Brown of UCH and the JCVI just said on LBC that HALF of the patients in his critical care department are in groups that do not qualify for the vaccination!

Maybe the priority list needs reexamining?

Londt · 10/01/2021 11:43

I saw Hancock’s promise and thought what wonderful news to cheer up a Sunday - I wonder how the MN doomsters will twist it into something negative Grin

PinkPiranha11 · 10/01/2021 11:48

I’m not expecting to have the vaccine any time soon, if it all. I have two young children and a business to run. I’m not staying in until 2022! FFS it’s really not about every single person being vaccinated! It’s about enough of the people who would take up NHS beds and potentially die being vaccinated to that society can restart. The healthy/younger ones are significantly less likely to be ill and take up beds. There is no need for the whole of society to be vaccinated before we can go out again!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 11:53

@PinkPiranha11 agree and exactly what I said earlier. I am not in the privileged position to not be able to work all year either. And I want my and other kids back in school too.
