timescale for non vulnerable under 50s being offered the vaccine?

Earlgrey666 · 09/01/2021 08:52

I wondered if there is an estimation of timescale for the above? I have searched but can't find any information on this.

I have friends in their 30s/40s with no underlying health conditions expecting to be offered the vaccine this Spring and I think they are being very optimistic!

Oh well, I never did like needles anyway Grin

@Hadenough80

Apparently according to that covid vaccine calculator I will be offered from March onwards. I'm 40, but I get carers allowance and have 3 children with autsim and learning disabilities. I'm wondering how they will know all the people who are an unpaid carer?
I think group six will be where things get behind. They don’t have an accurate picture of how many people fall into this category. I assumed carers allowance would be used but no you have to make sure you contact the GP yourself and have it put on your records. There are now many, many people adding themselves as carers that weren’t on record. The same with those who fall into the weight category I would say only the minority would have an accurate BMI on record with their GP. So all these people won’t be on the list.
Estreladebelem · 09/01/2021 11:52

I’m 41 with no health issues and assumed I wasn’t getting it at all unless they have leftovers...

QuiteWorried12 · 09/01/2021 12:02

Actually this sentence on the Gov website www.gov.uk/government/news/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-authorised-by-uk-medicines-regulator in relation to the new UK Vaccine Manufacturing and Innovation Centre is quite telling- 'Once open, it will be able to manufacture 70 million vaccines doses in just 6 months – enough for the UK population'. Assuming that most Covid vaccines will need 2 doses then they only intend to ever vaccinate 35 million people in the future (if this is still needed a few years down the line!)- the vulnerable then key workers I expect. So I have even less hope that everyone will be vaccinated.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 12:21
@BellsaRinging I’m concerned about this to. And if airlines only allow those who have been vaccinated to fly will young people not be allowed to go on holiday whilst others can. I’m fed up of my life being on hold and not knowing if younger people will continue to be treated badly
On the holiday thing, DH is 66 and is in band 5 for the vaccine, I'm 45 and may not get it. I'll be extremely pissed off if he's allowed to travel and I'm not!

I'm also worried about the implications of one of us having the vaccine and the other not. I presume if I haven't had it by the time restrictions are relaxed DH will have to carry on being careful so he doesn't give it to me.

Coasterfan · 09/01/2021 12:23

I m 41 and I did the checker, based on a million vaccines a week I can expect mine between January and June next year.

CoffeeRunner · 09/01/2021 12:24

I’m working in an area where we are starting to vaccinate Group 1 this coming week.

There are literally no plans for vaccinating otherwise healthy under 50’s yet at all. The lowest priority group we have at the moment is 16-54 with underlying health conditions.

tootyfruitypickle · 09/01/2021 12:38

There are no plans yet as we are in phase 1 but the govt has said all adults will be vaccinated . They couldn’t have done phase 2 pre knowing what vaccine we had

Nicecupofcoco · 09/01/2021 12:42

I thought the I'd seen somewhere that the idea was to vaccinate as many people over 16 as possible eventually? To give it to as many who will have it when they are offered? I'm still hopeful I'll be offered one! Even though I'm in my thirties and not vunerable. I do know I have a long time to wait! But hoping I'll be offered one at some point. Long covid can effect anybody.

citrusshowergel · 09/01/2021 12:56

The government want the economy to open up ASAP once hospitalisations and deaths reduce- if they announce that the non-vulnerable under 50s will be offered a vaccine I suspect that a lot of people will wait before resuming normal life e.g. eating out, pubs, going back to the office etc. If there was a vaccine on the horizon I'd probably still be cautious about going out and spending and wait it out until I got one. If not- then I'd probably go 'sod it, going to get this thing at some point anyway so I may as well get it this summer'.

peak2021 · 09/01/2021 13:52

I would wait for a couple of weeks to see how far towards the vaccination of the top four groups has got. I don't think the mid February target will be achieved, but I would love to be wrong.

Not sure how you draw that conclusion - it's not even due to open until December, so is irrelevant to the current rollout. Pfizer/Biontech for example isn't even manufactured in the UK, current UK supplies are coming from a manufacturing facility in Belgium.
Watchingbehindmyhands · 09/01/2021 14:47

Yes, we all are fed up of our lives being on hold but vaccinating people takes time. Someone will be first in the queue and others are going to be last. Given this disease affects older people and our hospitals are over flowing, why do you consider this is treating younger people badly?

It seems to me that many young people would happily just euthanise anyone they consider is getting in their way of them having a life, I suggest you might feel differently if you were 65 and otherwise healthy.

EagleFlight · 09/01/2021 14:49

@BuffyFairy

Whilst this is a great tool, every few weeks it gives me a different date and varies by several months.

I think the end of 2021 is the very optimistic hope for 18-50 year olds with no underlying conditions.

bumbleymummy · 09/01/2021 14:53

@BellsaRinging

Well I'm 47 and according to the calculator can expect my first dose between july and september and the second by december. I could cry. If that's what they're saying now then I predict it'll be even later. Another year of this? I actually dont think I can. No holidays. No seeing friends and family. Just work and homeschooling? I've spent the last year being super careful, restricting contact, not having any fun. Another fucking year?
Are you 47 with no underlying health conditions? Why do you feel that you need to be vaccinated to go back out and about? Vaccinating the more vulnerable is to reduce hospitalisations and the strain on the health services. Once that happens, restrictions will start to be lifted.
Covidcovid · 09/01/2021 15:31

I still worry about 19yo dd who has enough auto immune conditions to warrent a flu jab every year but apparently not priority for the Covid vaccine. She's told every year if she gets flu she's more likely to be seriously affected. 🤷‍♀️

PinkPiranha11 · 09/01/2021 15:34

I’m expecting spring 2022 for me (39, female, no health conditions).

Splodgetastic · 09/01/2021 15:48

@Covidcovid I understood from the BBC this morning that there are two million people who are on the list for flu but not priority for covid. That won’t all be pregnant women, it’ll include people like you DD and myself.

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/01/2021 16:02

The government have said they open to offer the vaccine to all over 16s who want it. When that happens will depend on the logistics of getting the vulnerable vaccinated and getting more vaccines approved, and while I doubt their mid-Feb plan will work out it does at least bode well for speed.

I'm 39, healthy, and hope to be vaccinated by autumn. I don't intend to go back to normal life until I'm vaccinated (i.e. indoor restaurants, gigs, flights etc).

If the working population isn't done by autumn we'll have another lockdown next winter.

I'm a similar age to you and will not be going back to normal life until I'm vaccinated either. It's just not worth the risk of getting long covid and possibly spending years/rest of my life disabled by it when I could have avoided it by not eating out or something.

Just read this interview with Hancock which suggests that restrictions will be lifted once the vulnerable are vaccinated- www.spectator.co.uk/article/were-going-to-have-a-great-summer-an-interview-with-matt-hancock

When millions more are infected the numbers of under 50s in hospital will rise- but he seems to suggest that's ok as long as the NHS is not overwhelmed! What is going to happen to vulnerable under 16s who cannot have a vaccine?

tootyfruitypickle · 09/01/2021 16:30

Yes same here I’ll obvs send back to school but apart from that will carry on with restrictions until vaccinated.

Forgetmenot157 · 09/01/2021 16:32

The queue checkers is only based on the current rollout tho so averaging it on what we have done so far... Are more are approved and the rollout is ramped up the timescales will shorten... I think spri g is optomiatic... Later summer is more realistic imo

Phyz · 09/01/2021 16:37

I don't think they have decided yet.
The priority groups were obviously justifiable because it reduces the burden on the NHS
The under 50s is much more problematic. There is a case for prioritising according to risk of occupation eg taxi drivers / retail staff /teachers / police etc. This is much more difficult to achieve consensus on.

Forgetmenot157 · 09/01/2021 16:37

@citrusshowergel under 16s are very unlikely to become seriously ill.

There is and always has been an acceptable amount of deaths and hospitalisations for any illness.

This one is no different and once we are down to that level restrictions will be lifted.... If you still personally feel worried then you will have to live your life based on what you perceive as a personal risk...

Most people however will be willing to take the risk to get back the freedoms we have lost.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 09/01/2021 16:39

I think by the time they need to vaccinate us, they will be worried about waning immunity in the already vaccinated or a new strain and have to start vaccinating all over again

I don’t think I will receive the vaccine any time soon, which doesn’t bother me for various reasons
