@Bohemiagirl

I'm in London. I think Sadiq Khan has been an utterly useless mayor.

On the subject of the major incident, I am genuinely frightened for the first time since the start of the pandemic. I have elderly and clinically vulnerable friends and family and fear for them getting ill.

I totally and utterly agree with you - he seems ineffective to me - I hate to say it - as I'm not a fan - but it seems to me that Boris did a much better job of being mayor that Khan.

Khan steps up and is interviewed and speaks out, when it suits him. Maybe his hands are tied re putting things into plans and policies being put into place but myself and a few other Londoners I know do think he is ineffective.

@loulouljh

This is the third lockdown..of course no-one is taking it seriously. There is a limit to people's endurance. We have passed that. Some time ago.
Sorry but that is ridiculous. We need to do this, or we will be enduring much worse. Everyone I know is perfectly capable of doing it and is taking it seriously. If anyone isn’t, they need to adjust their attitude fast.
kirinm · 08/01/2021 16:02

@CleverCatty but what did BJ actually do?

thepeopleversuswork · 08/01/2021 16:03

I'm also getting the impression that people hating on Sadiq don't know what the fuck they are talking about: anyone with the slightest knowledge of this knows that a) London was locked down by Christmas and b) it wasn't Sadiq's call to make anyway.

Sadiq has his faults but bizarre that he should have come a lightning rod for this sort of anger. You might want to look at Boris and the appalling Gavin Williamson.

MutantNinjaCovid · 08/01/2021 16:04

@thecatfromjapan

Lewis Goodall on Twitter has some data on school attendance.

He's a Newsnight journalist, so I expect they may cover the issue in Newsnight.

His data says that there are many schools with attendance of 40%-50%, some a lot lower.

Goodness knows where the OP of that thread lifted her imaginary 75% from - it doesn't figure in his data.

40-50% is quite high. But 75% ... I'm amazed the OP wasn't called out in that figure immediately.

I know a school that had 70% request places- so 75% is not impossible. Leeds LA have also quoted 70% at one school in the media.
XVmama · 08/01/2021 16:04

it seems to me that Boris did a much better job of being mayor that Khan.

Ever discussed it with the civil servants who actually have to work with London mayors? Can we allow they probably know better than we do?

Liftmusic · 08/01/2021 16:04

Thanks @thecatfromjapan, that’s from asking 6000 teachers informally as I understand it, not analysis of official attendance records but it does show how much higher numbers are.

I have realised that people get really defensive about it for some reason though.

@Theunamedcat

He should not have sanctioned mixing over Christmas 🤷‍♀️
He didn't in London.

CleverCatty
You are too delicious - and proving my point.

So ... now Khan is the tool of the elites, the lackey of the billionaires? Caring not one jot for the travails of the poor?

Boris Johnson (huzzah!) - that scourge of the billionaires - he's the one we should trust to protect us!

Honestly. See what I mean about the mad, incoherent, crazy rhetoric?

It just makes no sense.

It's like phrases being pulled randomly out of a bag by someone utterly drunk - and pared together randomly by someone who can't read them.

CleverCatty · 08/01/2021 16:06
@CleverCatty but what did BJ actually do?
he says he cut the murder rate and knife crime went down...

Actually in an article I've seen Sadiq begged BoJo for more police officers in August 2019 which was obviously not listened to - so I take back that criticism about him.

XVmama · 08/01/2021 16:06

FIL was criticising Sadiq Khan this morning. He lives in fucking Northumberland Grin.

MargeryMcLatchie · 08/01/2021 16:06

@thecatfromjapan

CleverCatty's post is really indicative of the social media hate-storm against Khan.

This is a thread about coronavirus, and Khan's statement.

But the mere mention of his name is a dog-whistle.

So ... knife crime.

Knife crime, of course, is best addressed through a multiplicity of areas and interventions - all of which were cut by austerity-pursuing Conservative governments.

This has been addressed in numerous academic papers and reports. And it's also common-sense.

So how has knife-crime become this thing by which a certain type of internet gremlin attacks the Mayor?

I think it started with the anti-Lindon rhetoric we saw with the Referendum. On the internet, a lot of anti-Lindon sentiment was unleashed: disparity between Lindon and the regions; Lindon elites; Lindon too rich; London too poor, too full of immigrants, too liberal; immigration and non-White people fuelling knife-crime ...

It was all quite illogical, quite contradictory. It was often very racist and nasty.

And that now has turned into attacks on Khan - who kind of exemplifies everything a certain section of our Great Isle hate.

So. Here we are. On a thread about coronavirus, with people ranting away about parking and knife-crime and 'don't you call me a racist ...'

Thank you @thecatfromjapan I thought the same. Rather reminds me of the kind of posts you get in any thread about Meghan Markle Hmm

I have realised that people get really defensive about it for some reason though.

It is indeed only based on a sample.

We're only on Day 5 (Day 4 in some areas), do a larger sample isn't going to be available.

But I thought it was interesting and potentially useful.

Also, his point is that numbers are significantly higher.

Everleigh2021 · 08/01/2021 16:08

I’m in essential retail. On my break at work but oh my, people I store Demanding service, wanting us to load their cars with non essential compost bags and buying paint and pot plants!

Stay at home fgs,puts employees at risk as we have no choice but to be here!

Bleepertybleep · 08/01/2021 16:09

Many people don’t realise how much more infectious the new variant is and are breaking the rules in fairly small ways - having a friend round to drop something off, having unnecessary bubbles. With the old variant they would probably have been lucky and not caught it. Now though it’s far easier to end up with it.ä
Although Xmas Mixing wasn’t encouraged apart from 1 family member and 1 friend, everyone I know got together with family for at least Xmas day. That will have spread it around for sure.

Except for absolute emergency all passenger flights should stop. Coffee shops, garden centres, b&q type places shut. Key worker needs redefining so that only those absolutely essential to the running of the Country are leaving the house to work.

Proper and regular cleaning of supermarkets and tightening up on exemptions to mask wearing. There are very few people who should be exempt. Above all the government need to act when they are advised to not 2 weeks after.

I didn't actually say that Khan was the tool of the elites at all...

But - I'm not sure - apart from requesting more police officers back in August 2019 i'm not sure what he's actually 'done' to reduce knife crime.

In fact, who was it who campaigned for free school meals? aha - Marcus Rashford... not Sadiq.

I'm not saying Sadiq doesn't try or doesn't worry about knife crime - but I do think he's ineffective - and as I stated maybe his hands are tied re doing more!

Lucidas · 08/01/2021 16:10

Almost 70,000 cases. Frightening. Remember when 50k a day was seen as the ultimate scaremongering exercise.

Johnson put London into tier 2 in the long run up to Christmas. Pubs, bars, etc jammed daily with office parties, etc then they all piled on to public transport.

Then lots of them went to visit family - many outside London.

We're ALL paying for that now.

TwentyTwentyOne · 08/01/2021 16:12

It's not being taken seriously. I just went food shopping before the weekend rush and there were just as many cars on the road as usual. People out for a stroll in 2s or 3s with take away coffees (why are they open?). I noticed every estate agent was in the shop/ office in town. Why can't they work form home?

People aren't taking it seriously enough. We are only going out for food and then my work as a key worker p/t.

I am in London and really worried now whereas I was not at all concerned previously (other than the empathy for those directly affected).
Quaagars · 08/01/2021 16:14

@SendHelp30
1. Nobody is taking it seriously

Not true.
Just because a vocal minority are idiots, doesn't mean we all are.
The Daily Fail etc aren't going to be "reporting" on people being sensible, doing the right thing are they?
Much more clickbait and froth fun to be had by whipping people up into a frenzy instead Hmm

roisevan · 08/01/2021 16:14

I've in London and recently tested positive for covid. It is scary to know that if I become seriously unwell the hospitals may not have space or even oxygen for me.

Before Christmas there were so many people ignoring the rules about social distancing and masks. The tube was full of people who had pulled their masks under their chins and no one to tell them not to. This was grimly inevitable and stricter rules and penalties will be needed to get it under control.

TwentyTwentyOne · 08/01/2021 16:15

I was waiting for the figures. Thanks for the heads up Lucidas:

*The UK has recorded its highest daily increase in the number of COVID-related deaths of the pandemic, with 1,325 fatalities.

Government figures also show the UK recorded 68,053 new coronavirus cases - also the highest daily total of the pandemic so far.*

This is not good. Thankfully we are locked down.

iwanttobeonabeach · 08/01/2021 16:17

SW London here- much less traffic on the roads. 99.9% of people wearing masks- hardly anyone out and about and not many kids at the local primary schools. We are taking it seriously.

VickyEadieofThigh · 08/01/2021 16:18

@lucywho123

Does anyone have any links to schools where there are 75% of children in? From what I've heard from family and friends its more like 15-20% of children in

My niece is in a school year of 90 children. There are only 11 children in with parents that are classed as key workers

I'm a governor of 4 primary schools - two have 75% of kids in and the other two around 40 and 60% respectively. They cannot teach and do online teaching at the same time.
