It looks like the thread is full of pro-Tory bots lambasting Khan. Go away and die, Khan will be our mayor!

It is Johnson and Johnson only responsible for this. When Islington and Greenwich wanted to shut schools 1-2 days before Christmas break, the GOVERNMENT threatened to take them to court and MADE them stay open. Is there a need to say anything more?

istherelifeafter40 · 08/01/2021 19:42

Khan - the best mayor ever. "Worst Mayor Ever"="Get Brexit Done", any other "3-word Tory Slogan"

Bohemiagirl · 08/01/2021 19:48

Istherelifeafter40 what are you talking about? It's offensive to suggest that people who dislike Khan are all Tories. As a Londoner I vote for the candidate who I think will best serve my city. I think Khan has done a terrible job. He's a weak opportunist.

BonnesVacances · 08/01/2021 19:52

We can't do any more. We're all staying at home, DD is CV and bed-bound anyway and I'm her FT carer. DH is working from home and DS is learning online. Online groceries. I fully expect to be here for months now and will eventually emerge blinking into the sunlight to see what and who is left after this wave has passed.

@loulouljh

Speak for yourself. We have done the opposite. Taking more care . Making sure our employees work from home . Strict bubbles for those that can not . And personally we are not leaving the house if at all possible. Having lost family to covid and having friends in the nhs it’s a sacrifice worth making .

And it seems you might be in a minority, otherwise why are people blaming the government for not going into lockdown earlier ?

That indicates people want to be told exactly what to do . Because for some reason they can’t curtail behaviour without instructions.

loulouljh · 08/01/2021 20:13

@Unsure 33: I don't think what you read on this little MN bubble is representative of the population as a whole. Good on you for playing your part...but that's not the whole story. I see people-neighbours, friends-who have lost their jobs, cannot pay their mortgages, cannot get treatment for non Covid illness, marriages have broken down, cannot work with their children at home. You are seeing part of the picture but only a small part. All has merit.

StillGoingToWork · 08/01/2021 20:15

Sadiq Khan is an arrogant twonk but he's not responsible for the current shitshow. Put your blame on Central Government. (Sean Bailey is the Tory candidate and he has not a clue about Transport).

Anyway, as someone who works with the London public daily, I can tell you my fellow residents are tired, bored, probably furloughed or recently made redundant, probably facing a bit of anxiety and depression, and cannot be arsed to comply anymore. They are DONE.

Further point, I was on a bus today on the lower deck in my uniform and even though the upper deck was empty someone sat right next to me. I had to ask him several times to move away so that I could get past and move upstairs. It's obvious that I'm more likely to catch the virus, or carry it asymptomatically, because my coat was covered in TfL roundels. But he really did not care.

What a load of twiddle, I've never ever voted Tory, but Sadiq is pointless, only rests his head like a meerkat when there's drama... he's the Andy Burnham of the south
MRex · 08/01/2021 20:51

I feel bad for Shaun Bailey actually, if it weren't a pandemic he could be getting more coverage and he's the first person in decades who appears to actually have knowledge and a plan for stopping kids from getting involved with gangs. It's appalling how young lives are being destroyed and I wish he'd get the chance. I don't think he has a chance of catching up on the polls though; we had one leaflet a year ago plus a few newspaper articles, so I doubt most people have even heard of him.

thecatfromjapan · 08/01/2021 21:03

Shaun Bailey is 'the first person in a decade' who knows about knife crime.

What a stupid statement.

Seriously.

Re-read it.

I know we've had 5 years of having to wade through an ocean of stupidity but ...

The man isn't an expert on knife crime. He's definitely not the expert on knife crime.

Perhaps some of the charities and groups Khan actually gives funding to might contain an expert or two.

MRex · 08/01/2021 21:07

@thecatfromjapan - if you like to misquote then it's going to be tricky to have a discussion. Clearly you have a different view of how to tackle gangs, but for your information the issues aren't actually just about knife crime.

Spaceman1 · 08/01/2021 21:22

If Sadiq Khan was serious he would stop the underground. It is not possible to keep people safe when they are on the tube.

RoseAndRose · 08/01/2021 21:49

I've just seen a news item about fines for those not wearing masks on the Tube. >1000 people just coughed up the fixed penalty notice.

104 were dealt with in court (mainly for non-payment)

Just one produced evidence of a relevant medical condition.

Akire · 08/01/2021 21:53

They need to do something, I’m in a large tower block in London. No mask
No distancing yet we all have to get in and out of building. Not even a single poster from the council or housing association saying don’t share the lift or wear a mask until you are inside your own flat. A year into Covid and you could be forgiven thinking everyone here is totally obviously.

@Spaceman1 stop the tube? How on earth and doctors and nurses meant to get to work? Ridiculous comment.
ExpulsoCorona · 08/01/2021 23:03

Sadiq Khan wanted to close schools a week before the end of term. That actually would have made a difference to this current situation. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-55299848

MinesaBottle · 08/01/2021 23:08

RoseAndRose not to mention the shitloadswho were turned away from stations and other forms of transport because they refused to wear a mask and weren’t exempt.

Personally I think Sadiq has done a decent job given this is a crisis none of us expected. Re the police, he/the Met can’t just pull more officers out of the big policeman box on the shelf at City Hall Hmm and on transport, Boris aided by George Osborne took away the operating grant for TfL making it the only major metro system that’s funded wholly by passenger revenues. Which have crashed because Covid.

Sadiq was my MP and tbh apart from a couple of publicity grabbing exercises I think he did a decent job. I admit he comes across as something of a career politician but he also comes across as caring about Londoners in a way Boris never did. I think he’s doing the best he can, given he only has direct authority over a few things in this city eg transport. I’m glad he’s our mayor atm rather than Boris (although I’d Boris was still mayor at least he wouldn’t be PM...)

So they’ll have to go by his instead then? And that’s better because?

How fo you suggest key workers like carers who look after the elderly and the disabled at home get to work then? I’m very interested to hear your covid safe alternative......

Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 23:11

Bus that should be

Agree, I don't know how anyone can apportion blame to Sadiq Khan for this situation. I say this as someone who fails to see the point of a city mayor but I can at least acknowledge he is not responsible.

MinesaBottle · 08/01/2021 23:17

Spaceman1

I’d rather travel on the tube. More people wearing masks, more enforcement and they disinfect trains and stations regularly. And as pp have said how would you expect people to get to work? Buses don’t go everywhere and taxis are expensive.

thecatfromjapan · 08/01/2021 23:40

@MinesaBottle👍

MRex · 09/01/2021 05:45

Key workers need the tube to get to work, others depend on it for travelling for healthcare (not everything is covid), so it can't just be closed without causing issues. Some tubes are overground with windows by the way!

ConfusedcomMum · 09/01/2021 06:07

MinesaBottle 100% agree, he's a decent mayor. We had been campaigning for step free access for our local rail and underground stations for years with no joy. We have a lot of elderly and disabled residents. A few days into the job and he gave the go ahead. 👌
