Well said @SmidgenofaPigeon.

Cornettoninja · 08/01/2021 14:05

@SmidgenofaPigeon very balanced post, good to read.

I imagine it’s one of those things that you will likely stay on the periphery of unless you need urgent medical assistance (covid or otherwise). Most of us won’t have a brush with the reality of the actual disaster.

the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 14:08

It's not the flu!
A friends partner (48) is currently fighting for his life on a ventilator and that wouldn't happen if it was ' just flu 'I'm sure. He hasn't any underlying health issues prior to this. The hospitals are overwhelmed and the lockdown isn't working as well as the one in the spring last year because some still don't believe it's real or refuse to follow the guidelines.
The new mutant strain is clearly causing havoc , especially in London.
I feel for those working in the NHS.
It must be hell.

RoseAndRose · 08/01/2021 14:08

Wasn't there talk of moving patients who were recovering but not yet able to go home to the Nightingale? They'd still need staffing, but not so many and not ICU capable. So hard to find but not as hard as staffing levels required for more critical patients

This leaving acute hospitals with a bit more capacity for new admissions. But a relentless pace of work for staff there

Freddiefox · 08/01/2021 14:10

@Waxonwaxoff0

Schools only closed on Tuesday. We haven't had a chance to see if that makes a difference yet.
Schools are barely closed, way too many keyworkers to have an effect
billysboy · 08/01/2021 14:11

I got a parking ticket from two jolly wardens in EC1 yesterday , whilst I accept I shouldnt park for too long in a loading bay the place is deserted and are they really essential to keep London moving whilst on lockdown

This mayor is wrecking London with all of his unused cycle lanes etc

Concentrate on enforcing the current rules !

This is all about getting more money so that he can spend more on shitty schemes

TempsPerdu · 08/01/2021 14:14

@nevernotstruggling There are 9 million people in London. Most of us are absolutely fine. It’s a serious situation, yes, but hardly the zombie apocalypse. Hmm

Wolfff · 08/01/2021 14:15

Yeah let’s kill more kids with selfish idiots who drive and park where they want and how dare they try and encourage cycling. Covid is all the mayors fault not the shit government Hmm

He's doing an Andy Burnham I think they call it
mrshoho · 08/01/2021 14:15

Stay home and limit your exposure as far as possible.

I don't know how many school children are still going in but needs to be limited as much as possible. I'm back in my school on Monday but hoping the numbers of children will be low. My own two are staying at home.

This is like it is living in countries when everything is run by the state. If the stock of the vaccine were made in enough quantities for private clinics more people would have it. This will run much more quickly.

lucywho123 · 08/01/2021 14:19

Does anyone have any links to schools where there are 75% of children in? From what I've heard from family and friends its more like 15-20% of children in

My niece is in a school year of 90 children. There are only 11 children in with parents that are classed as key workers

Wolfff · 08/01/2021 14:20

@blueangel19

There is finite availability. Yeah, much better to steal from the old and vulnerable and give to the rich. What a load of crap.

No because it's all anecdotal gossip

Our school has 700 ordinarily, there's 50 odd in

the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 14:20

I've never rated the mayor myself , but if his declared a critical emergency then at least there might be a bit of help available now and his told the government how things are. He can't do much else.
If people are getting parking fines , that is ridiculous and should be waived. The roads must be much quieter and money grabbing at a time like this isn't fair.
Maybe having all these mayors for different cities isn't really a good idea , but that's a whole other thread.

blueangel19 · 08/01/2021 14:20

He is the main virus for Londonders.

😂😂😂🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠

Etinox · 08/01/2021 14:21
Confused Why?
whittystitties · 08/01/2021 14:21

I don't understand how funding can help right now if it's the hospitals collapsing, you can't just train nurses and doctors up overnight

School was closed at end of last term in London and Christmas mixing didn’t happen

Although some probably did and schools have a fair few in them

There’s not much you can do other than stay home and wait for cases to drop

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 08/01/2021 14:23

@Cornettoninja

I really think there’s an argument to concentrate the vaccine on areas with high case numbers. I realise that’s an increasingly redundant argument at the numbers we’re seeing increasing nationally but if we have a steady supply ordered then the direction of the supply could be adjusted.
I understand your logic but can you imagine how this would go down nationally? It would look very much like areas with high numbers were being rewarded.
CleverCatty · 08/01/2021 14:25

@Separateatone

Masks everywhere. Only absolutely essential trips out, tighter definition of keyworker, quarantine on return from overseas
Definitely - I live outskirts of SE London and you wouldn't believe the amount of people - especially younger people who don't bother wearing masks, social distancing etc.

When I was eating out, outside with friends before Christmas a drunk woman sauntered over to our table for a 'chat' - I had to back off - with no mask on whatsoever and seemingly oblivious to the fact you weren't supposed to mix, seemed normal too - no SN etc.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 08/01/2021 14:25

@blueangel19

The worst mayor ever. Waste of space.
Exactly this. And London was licked down for Christmas so it isn’t Christmas mixing that has caused this as we weren’t allowed.
Martinisarebetterdirty · 08/01/2021 14:26

Locked down not licked Grin
