CleverCatty's post is really indicative of the social media hate-storm against Khan.

This is a thread about coronavirus, and Khan's statement.

But the mere mention of his name is a dog-whistle.

So ... knife crime.

Knife crime, of course, is best addressed through a multiplicity of areas and interventions - all of which were cut by austerity-pursuing Conservative governments.

This has been addressed in numerous academic papers and reports. And it's also common-sense.

So how has knife-crime become this thing by which a certain type of internet gremlin attacks the Mayor?

I think it started with the anti-Lindon rhetoric we saw with the Referendum. On the internet, a lot of anti-Lindon sentiment was unleashed: disparity between Lindon and the regions; Lindon elites; Lindon too rich; London too poor, too full of immigrants, too liberal; immigration and non-White people fuelling knife-crime ...

It was all quite illogical, quite contradictory. It was often very racist and nasty.

And that now has turned into attacks on Khan - who kind of exemplifies everything a certain section of our Great Isle hate.

So. Here we are. On a thread about coronavirus, with people ranting away about parking and knife-crime and 'don't you call me a racist ...'

@HmmSureJan

And I know why a lot of people don’t like Sadiq, I’m sure I don't need to spell it out.

Well how did he get in in the first place then? He's widely expected to get in again too. It's nothing to do with race. I'm so tired of this. I voted for him, almost all my WHITE friends voted for him. All mayors get moaned about and slated, it really is that simple.

Well it was either him, or the Tory Candidate whose campaign sent hate mail to people they thought were Hindu about Muslims.

I was told to vote for Khan by all the Conservatives I know because of that bit of campaigning...

kirinm · 08/01/2021 15:44

@Dongdingdong

I would love to hear something positive BJ did as Mayor. Something that wasn't already in progress when he was elected ideally.

Scrapped the god awful bendy buses for one. I hated the sodding things!

At a huge cost.
Peachered · 08/01/2021 15:45

@donewithitalltodayandxmas plenty of mixing happened in London over Christmas.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 08/01/2021 15:46

@Peachered it was banned on xmas day though wasn't it ? So any that was done then wasn't allowed

thecatfromjapan · 08/01/2021 15:48

Lewis Goodall on Twitter has some data on school attendance.

He's a Newsnight journalist, so I expect they may cover the issue in Newsnight.

His data says that there are many schools with attendance of 40%-50%, some a lot lower.

Goodness knows where the OP of that thread lifted her imaginary 75% from - it doesn't figure in his data.

40-50% is quite high. But 75% ... I'm amazed the OP wasn't called out in that figure immediately.

the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 15:49

Boris Johnson also wasted money when he was mayor. How they get away with it i'm not sure. It is so sad that they do and they can without being held to any account.
Still, it doesn't stop this current situation being bad in London with the virus and will only get worse I'm sure.

QueenoftheAir · 08/01/2021 15:49

The contrast between this and the Derbyshire arrests thread is quite striking

Indeed, @RoseAndRose

That thread seems full of covid-deniers, saying that people are perfectly fine to drive miles for "exercise" carrying takeway coffees. I wonder if they listen to the news - the accounts on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme from various frontline health care workers were particularly harrowing today.

And anyone who needs serious medical care for cancer, hip replacements, etc can now go whistle for it.

Liftmusic · 08/01/2021 15:49

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz other than obtaining confidential school attendance records I am not really sure what can be done then.
Those who refuse to believe it because of anecdotal gossip or what their friends say are not really any more accurate.

It always puzzles me the desire to talk down the scale of this situation- maybe it’s easier to cope with if it seems less serious.

My dc have key worker places and are currently at 70% according to the email sent out this afternoon.

Possibly it depends on the area but I doubt it’s a priority to collate all the stats for those who want them on mumsnet.

whittystitties · 08/01/2021 15:50
@openallthetime London is a very diverse city. It's insulting and wrong to say those of us who think Khan has been a bloody useless mayor do so because of his race or religion. He combines being useless (from violent crime rising to so many bridges closed at once) with being attention seeking and self serving - no doubt he wants to mirror BoJo and become Labour leader --> prime minister.

It makes me so angry when people write off genuine criticism of a crap mayor as islamophobia.
It's got sod all to do with his colour, he literally only appears when there's a problem

Liftmusic · 08/01/2021 15:52

Please could those asserting that schools are at 20% attendance provide proof? You can’t just spout that here without providing peer reviewed links Wink

Bohemiagirl · 08/01/2021 15:53

I'm in London. I think Sadiq Khan has been an utterly useless mayor.

On the subject of the major incident, I am genuinely frightened for the first time since the start of the pandemic. I have elderly and clinically vulnerable friends and family and fear for them getting ill.

XVmama · 08/01/2021 15:53

@Unsure33

You asked which employers are back. I’m in W4 and the place is absolutely packed with property and construction people. A friend who designs kitchens and bathrooms has a full list for 2021 for the first time in her career. I need to have a cracked sash window replaced and nobody can get to me until March. People who worked in bars and restaurants have switched to home delivery. The service economy - all the nannies and cleaners who were paid to stay at home last time are very much back, taking care of kids while their parents WFH.

My evidence is also anecdotal but I make my school to be at 7%, but of course a low % won't ruffle as many feathers as a lie!!
user7778 · 08/01/2021 15:54

@Separateatone

Masks everywhere. Only absolutely essential trips out, tighter definition of keyworker, quarantine on return from overseas
At least the will now be requiring a negative covid test for anyone entering the country from next week
thecatfromjapan · 08/01/2021 15:54

The Lewis Goodall initial schools data.

Numbers way higher than March but 75% rare:

MargeryMcLatchie · 08/01/2021 15:56

@Theunamedcat

He should not have sanctioned mixing over Christmas 🤷‍♀️
Sadiq Khan did not sanction meeting over Christmas. He has been pushing for tighter restrictions all along.

This is easier to read;

C8H10N4O2 · 08/01/2021 15:57

Exactly this. We need private sector efficiency

Yes our billion pound track and trace programme which has failed to track or trace effectively is plainly the model to which public sector should aspire.

LangClegsInSpace · 08/01/2021 15:58

WHO on Monday:

As well as minimising contacts in this critical period governments must support people who have to isolate or quarantine. Just as governments have generated stimulus to keep economies going it's important to find innovative ways to offer people the chance to isolate safely away from others.

To break chains of transmission we must identify and find those who are infected, provide the care they need and help them truly isolate safely.

There are around 160,000 hotel rooms in London, the vast majority of them are currently empty. Why are we still insisting everyone 'isolates' at home with the rest of their household?

the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 15:58

When I went to Australia in the mid 80s the planes were sprayed on arrival! Coming back to London , nothing was done.
I've no idea if this is still done or not but surely this might help a bit if this practice was done here? Make it part of the cabin crew routine?
The jet plane is carrying these viruses around and that's how it's getting into London and making it worse.

But - basically if knife crime overlapped into rich areas so much (and it has with thieves on mopeds stealing Rolexes etc) then you'd be damned sure Khan would've solved this ASAP.

But because it's poor underprivileged people, the police don't dare to go into half the estates which are deprived, and the youth clubs are all but closed leaving the youth nothing to do.

Add to that the fact that the police on the street are cut hugely...

Liftmusic · 08/01/2021 15:59

Michaela Marsh said: "My daughter's class basically are all in school, there are 60 in total as they have two split classes of 30 children, except for around 15 that are home schooling (we have seen this on videos which are sent to show what key worker children are doing, which is getting my daughter upset because she is not with her friends). There's too many in school so this isn't going to work."

Anna Carlin fears the R number won't reduce 'when half to three quarters of the school is still in'

Karen Thomas said: "We have three classes in and another opening next week, not exactly helping everyone when we are meant to be on lockdown. I'm in and to be honest getting quite worried about it all

Liars all of them, trying to ruffle feathers.

My ‘anecdotal’ evidence is just as good as yours and it’s really frustrating when randoms on the internet imply that it’s made up for the dramas.

My dc 2 school had 70% in. I have no idea why you want to talk that down.

thecatfromjapan · 08/01/2021 16:00

MargeryMcLatchie, I do wonder if people fully realise the extent (or rather, the lack of reach,) of the Mayor's powers?

It is, indeed, the government which is in charge of coronavirus legislation.

MargeryMcLatchie · 08/01/2021 16:01

@UpMySt

He is the main virus for Londonders.
Funny that they look set to be voting him right back in (when we eventually get our mayoral election).
