Racism and Islamophobia is the reason Sadiq Khan is disliked.

He’s actually a very good London mayor - he has managed a very polarised potential tinderbox of a city extremely well through a lot of change, he lets experts and civil servants guide him, and he’s not in bed with a load of corrupt skeevies.

On which note, when might the previous incumbent refund us the £43m of our money he stole for our garden bridge?

Arobase · 08/01/2021 14:42

@blueangel19

The worst mayor ever. Waste of space.
Certainly not. Infinitely better than Johnson was. Remember the idiotic garden bridge?
Dongdingdong · 08/01/2021 14:42

including an odd job man to pop the Xmas decorations away

An odd job man to put the Christmas decorations away? Oh how the other half live!

He has achieved very little with regards to main priorities for london like violent crime and transport.

Agree.

@Russellbrandshair

Why is it the governments fault, if people adhered to the rules, we wouldn't be in the state we are in....

Lets see shall we?

  1. Lack of PPE for key workers. They messed that up right at the beginning and wasted millions on the wrong PPE
  2. Lack of an adequate track and trace system when other countries had brilliantly effective ones
  3. Lockdown too late.
  4. Getting us to "eat out to help out" then a month later blaming us for spreading the virus
  5. Mismanaging and causing unnecessary delays in the vaccine being available
  • Only a week ago insisting that 9 boroughs in London were perfectly fine for schools to reopen. Whilst all around them the NHS was telling us our hospitals were in crisis.
  • oakleaffy · 08/01/2021 14:45

    Key Worker phoned and said motorway he'd been on this afternoon was so busy.

    First lockdown he sent me this, showing state of nearly all roads in proper Lockdown:

    Violent crime is a central government responsibility.

    Cut the police force, crime increases, you blame the mayor and get your Tory mate in.

    openallthetime · 08/01/2021 14:45

    @XVmama "Racism and Islamophobia is the reason Sadiq Khan is disliked."

    I thought this might be something to do with it!! I wondered if there were legitimate reasons behind it. So sad if that is the case.

    Yeah let’s kill more kids with selfish idiots who drive and park where they want and how dare they try and encourage cycling. Covid is all the mayors fault not the shit government

    This.

    MarshaBradyo · 08/01/2021 14:46

    No love for Khan here. Has irritated throughout.

    HappyThursdays · 08/01/2021 14:46

    or maybe it's as much to do with the fact that there's a very transmissible virus doing the rounds and it's winter and even wtihout Covid, the NHS struggles every year at this point

    I think the way people have all managed to turn on each other in this pandemic is extraordinary

    Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 14:46

    Only a week ago insisting that 9 boroughs in London were perfectly fine for schools to reopen. Whilst all around them the NHS was telling us our hospitals were in crisis

    Yes! also, telling us to stay home whilst people in the government and government advisors ignored the advice themselves so they could go on drives to "test their eyesight", or shag their married lovers during lockdown.

    How on earth can you expect people to take your advice seriously when you arent even following it? it undermines everything you are telling others to do!

    yawnsvillex · 08/01/2021 14:46

    @blueangel19

    The worst mayor ever. Waste of space.

    Agreed

    Lucidas · 08/01/2021 14:47

    Someone I know who works as an ophthalmologist at Moorfields has now said they’re going to be deployed. Lots of staff needed for the Nightingale, essentially as a step-down facility for the rehabilitation for post-ITU covid patients still requiring oxygen and nursing care.

    XVmama · 08/01/2021 14:47

    I’m no fan for various trivial reasons, but I have many colleagues who have worked alongside the mayors at City Hall, and Sadiq is leagues ahead of Ken and Boris in their estimation.

    Unsure33 · 08/01/2021 14:48

    @middleager

    that is scary - in our area - I don't see that happening .

    I do think that people do conform if everyone else is - and if others are not bothering I think people do copy . It sort of spreads like the virus .

    If paramedics are saying people are breaking the rules I guess it must be true .

    But I do wonder if with the new variant whether 2 m and masks and washing hands is enough ?

    the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 14:48

    What can a London mayor do about knife crime realistically?
    Police have been cut to the bone. They can't be everywhere and the mayor can't stop people buying knives.
    What else do people think he can do about it? I'm not a fan of his, but people saying ' he isn't doing this or that' is fine but they rarely have the answers as to how they would stop these hideous crimes themselves.
    Anyway, it is scary what is going on in London and lockdown 3 is clearly not working.
    Nobody is protecting the NHS in London it seems :(

    Anjo2011 · 08/01/2021 14:49

    IMO Sadiq Khan is the worst major London has had. Knife crime in London is out of control. That aside, this is awful to read. The emergency services have never been more needed but are more understaffed and under resourced than ever.

    MutantNinjaCovid · 08/01/2021 14:50

    But everyone is a precious snowflake for whom the rules can be bent.

    Its only a trip to Starbucks or MacDonalds (cars need petrol, takeaway staff need to get to work and mix on public transport and whilst at work etc)

    We only met by accident the other 6 families in the park (large groups in our park yesterday, footballs in hand)

    But I am a critical worker and my child needs to be in school (honestly? Deliveroo driver? MacDonalds worker? Admin for a luxury good retailer who is working from home?)

    I need 17 bubbles for my wellbeing

    A couple of weeks ago large groups of 20 -30 year old son the tube with no masks. One group here shouting they had asthma as they downed wine from the mini bottles.etc etc

    Basically as a country we have no community spirit, no sense of doing the right thing even if it isnt the easiest thing.

    It is every person for themselves and sod the rest.

    XVmama · 08/01/2021 14:50

    What don’t people understand about policing and crime? It’s a central government responsibility and budget not a Mayor of London one.

    SmidgenofaPigeon · 08/01/2021 14:51

    You’re throwing your vitriol at the wrong person here.

    And I know why a lot of people don’t like Sadiq, I’m sure I don't need to spell it out.

    XVmama · 08/01/2021 14:52

    Funding emergency services also a central government responsibility. NHS has been defunded and corruptly funded through PFI and now you’re blaming the wrong guy, not the Tories you voted in who were responsible.

    Dongdingdong · 08/01/2021 14:52

    I'm not a fan of his, but people saying ' he isn't doing this or that' is fine but they rarely have the answers as to how they would stop these hideous crimes themselves.

    I don’t get this logic. Why should they have the answers? They’re not mayor, Sadiq Khan is!

    dahliaaa · 08/01/2021 14:53

    I'm a key worker in central London. There is NO comparison to the first lockdown. Roads and public transport still so much more busy than they were first time round.
    And my biggest bugbear ... so many people not wearing masks or respecting social distancing.
    (I know some people are exempt from wearing masks but I don't believe it's that many ...)

    Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 14:54

    I don’t get this logic. Why should they have the answers? They’re not mayor, Sadiq Khan is

    I agree. I can not like or agree with the way a doctor handles something without having to have a medical degree. I can dislike the haircut I have been given without being a hair stylist myself. I can disagree with the government without being an MP.
    The SHOULD have the answers because they get paid to have them- its literally their JOB

    kazzer2867 · 08/01/2021 14:54

    @Theunamedcat

    He should not have sanctioned mixing over Christmas 🤷‍♀️
    FFS. You clearly don't know what you are talking about.
