Maybe the worst hit hospitals need to just close? If people suddenly realize that 24:7 care isn't there they might take it a bit more seriously! You can't make staff work any harder than they are doing or keep bringing people in with nowhere for them to go.
They wont of course, but nothing else is working is it? People are getting ill because they won't follow the rules and employers are making them go into work.
It's an impossible situation all round and people were told this would happen months ago too.

CleverCatty · 08/01/2021 14:26

Martinisarebetterdirty - but a few people I know did mix outside their bubbles etc - not me and my family and friends but acquaintances of mine did this.

RedMarauder · 08/01/2021 14:27

@Theunamedcat

He should not have sanctioned mixing over Christmas 🤷‍♀️
There was no mixing allowed in London over Xmas as London was in Tier 4 like Essex, Kent and most of Surrey. The rest of the SE went into Tier 4 at 00.01 on Boxing Day.

How do I know? I live in London, have friends and colleagues down the road in Essex, Kent and Surrey, plus have more family and friends in Hertfordshire and Sussex.

@blueangel19

I am content to wait my turn like everyone else. I don't agree that making it available to those that can pay is more efficient. I don't see how that makes me an 'idiot'

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 08/01/2021 14:27

I saw a Twitter post explaining why a more transmissible strain is so bad.

It pointed out that if we start with a 120/100000 death rate and it becomes 50% more fatal that gives a 190 death rate. If it becomes 50% more catching then after 10 days you're at a 900 death rate just because the infection spreads so fast.

Scary.

whittystitties · 08/01/2021 14:29

@Martinisarebetterdirty

Locked down not licked Grin
Perhaps that's what really happened and why we're in this mess Grin
Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 14:29

The only way to sort this is to get the fcking vaccine out quicker.

I'm getting sick and tired of being told we arent doing enough. I wear a mask every bloody where, I only go out for food and I havent met or seen anyone. I cannot do any more than that - if I could order food I would but there are no slots so unless myself and my family starve to death, there is NOTHING more I can do,

This is the governments job now so they need to take responsibility for this shit show.

openallthetime · 08/01/2021 14:30

I don't mean to derail the thread or sound clueless, but why all the hate for Sadiq Khan? Could someone fill me in quickly? Is he really that bad?

says in that BBC article that Surrey and Sussex declared major incidents on Thursday so it's not only London

HmmSureJan · 08/01/2021 14:33

@nevernotstruggling

Dreadful. Feel grateful we are not in london. Hope all Londoners are as ok as they can be x
Thank you. I'm in London. I'm glad he's done this. It's very frightening and it's nice to read some kindly words given that London so often gets a lot of stick on here.
the80sweregreat · 08/01/2021 14:33

I've followed the rules too , but clearly others haven't and the authorities can call as many emergencies as they like and people will continue to not listen to any of it or believe Facebook or u tube.
There is a paramedic talking on lbc now saying that people are not following the rules or wearing masks and his putting his own life on the line to help these people.
It is so scary.

borntobequiet · 08/01/2021 14:33

@UpMySt

He is the main virus for Londonders.
There are probably many people either suffering from the virus or working to the limits of their physical and emotional ability to deal with it who might not only disagree with you but think you rather a shallow and definitely a very unpleasant person for saying this.
Takeitonthechin · 08/01/2021 14:34

Why is it the governments fault, if people adhered to the rules, we wouldn't be in the state we are in....

Bad not the correct description, useless/invisible better
loulouljh · 08/01/2021 14:37

This is the third lockdown..of course no-one is taking it seriously. There is a limit to people's endurance. We have passed that. Some time ago.

oakleaffy · 08/01/2021 14:37

@Separateatone

Masks everywhere. Only absolutely essential trips out, tighter definition of keyworker, quarantine on return from overseas
Absolutely. Masks help protect OTHERS from your spit particles as you talk, cough or sneeze...

A shop owner said in the summer she saw mask less people's spit spray as they talked..the sun catches the particles as they fly out.

Allowing foreign travel is insane. This is what seeded the virus so rapidly initially, Worldwide.

Londoners weren't allowed to mix over Christmas.
middleager · 08/01/2021 14:39

You've only got to read some threads or look around to see why rates aren't reducing.

I was tier 4 and the day before lockdown I went to a local takeaway coffee shop for the first time. They had a marquee up and you had to walk by this to access the shop. The marquee was packed with people at tables, no masks, socialising (I didn't even think that was allowed in T4, gatherings outside).

I went to the shop while there, several in no masks. Not all of them would have been exempt surely?

  • a MN post about a business meeting at the Hilton with more than 20 delegates that could be done via teams
  • schools with 75% attendance

-Mobile hairdressers still going into family homes

  • my friends and families meeting up to mooch around B&M, then Dunhelm, Asda, garden centre and carpet shops. Car sharing from different houses. They're bored.
  • non essential home improvement, workmen in, including an odd job man to pop the Xmas decorations away
  • family member with several bubbles. As she lives alone, she believes she can bubble with numerous households.
MajesticWhine · 08/01/2021 14:39

Sadiq Khan is an attention seeking nitwit without the intelligence required for high office. He calls for others to take action but does nothing himself. He has achieved very little with regards to main priorities for london like violent crime and transport.

Dongdingdong · 08/01/2021 14:39

Agree - total and utter madness. Of course the Chinese government didn’t help by attempting to suppress the whole thing either. By the time they came clean the horse had well and truly bolted.

Couldn't agree more with you. Thank heavens the vaccine priority rollout is not going anywhere near private companies.

Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 14:40

Why is it the governments fault, if people adhered to the rules, we wouldn't be in the state we are in....

Lets see shall we?

  1. Lack of PPE for key workers. They messed that up right at the beginning and wasted millions on the wrong PPE
  2. Lack of an adequate track and trace system when other countries had brilliantly effective ones
  3. Lockdown too late.
  4. Getting us to "eat out to help out" then a month later blaming us for spreading the virus
  5. Mismanaging and causing unnecessary delays in the vaccine being available
Russellbrandshair · 08/01/2021 14:41

Oh yes and lack of adequate border control meaning the virus was brought in and rapidly spread

FrankiesKnuckle · 08/01/2021 14:41

Firefighters (LFB) have been used since late March 2020 to drive ambulances for the London Ambulance service (LAS)
They were stood down end of September. The second peak was imminent yet no one listened.
Covid is now rife throughout the LFB, and they are unable to give the amount of staff back to the LAS.
There's also upwards of 35% of LAS staff off sick/isolating at the current time (likely more)
The LAS call rate is through the roof. Ambulance delays at hospital are ridiculously long.

This weekend will be especially bad as it's 2 weeks post Christmas.
