Have most over 80s been called for vaccine now?

Do you have a family member over 80 who has not had the call yet?

My DF still hasn't heard. All other family members over 80 have had already theirs, or have appointments this week.

He has underlying conditions that would put him at particular risk and he's refusing to shield Hmm so hoping it won't be much longer.

‘The Oxford one is only being done in five hospital hubs at the moment to make sure there aren't any problems. It will be rolled out to GP hubs from next week.‘

That explains a lot- I was wondering why more gps hadn’t got going this week now Oxford is available.

My Mum in the NW got hers today. I had to call her a taxi as she was too scared to drive - they had snow overnight. She was promised the second dose in 3 weeks (Pfizer vaccine). Not done at a hospital but a large GPcentre. They seem to be doing it town by town there. Her neighbours with a GP in the next town were vaccinated before Xmas.

knittingaddict · 08/01/2021 14:38

@knittingaddict

My parents live in the South in Hampshire in an area with a massive increase in cv cases. One is 89 and the other 85. Neither have been called for a vaccination. My dad has asthma and cancer and my mum is diabetic. I hope it happens soon.
I just wanted to add to my post that they live in a built up area and definitely not rural.

If they only ring once and my mum answers the phone then we are stuffed. She has dementia and I would put good money on her either not mentioning it to my dad or refusing the vaccination. The surgery usually lets my brother know if they have an appointment coming up, so hopefully he will find out and sort it.

My 91 year old grandmother still hasn’t been called - starting to feel very cross now, so much for rolling it out quickly and efficiently

Musicaltheatremum · 08/01/2021 14:46

Scotland's astra zenica started this week. I'm Edinburgh. Some practices got theirs on Wednesday vaccinated yesterday and onwards.
We have 300 ambulant over 80s we should get 100 vaccines Monday and have planned clinics Wednesday thurs Friday to get it done.
We have 8 frontline staff to vaccinate too from this lot of jags. Also 2 cleaners and as they had to deep clean a room where a covid patient had been this is a priority too.
Problems are
You can't deliver everywhere at once.
Needles and syringes have to be sourced.
You have to vaccinate in groups of 10 as once the vial is punctured it has to be used within 6 hours.
If someone doesn't turn up we have to find someone else to vaccinate so there's no waste. We will call people in at short notice for this.
We also have the day job to do as well as the vaccine.

My nana and grandad both age 87 have not been called yet. They have asked us not to call their house phone only their mobile as they are anxious about missing it

planningaheadtoday · 08/01/2021 14:48

In our area they are doing the 80+
This week. I was told this morning it's very much dependent on where you live and if you are within driving distance of a central hub.

Our GP surgeries in the area are not vaccinating. They instead have a rota between them and are going in to vaccinate at the hub. We are fortunate to have a large district hospital and relatively low population in the area, although a higher proportion of elderly.

I know, its frustrating. But the Pfizer one was only being given in a limited number of sites. And the Oxford vaccine was only approved by the regulator just over a week ago - they are already giving it in five hospital sites and should be in primary care hubs from Monday, so I think that's pretty good really.
DramaAlpaca · 08/01/2021 14:52

My parents are in their 80s and are relieved to be having theirs today.

planningaheadtoday · 08/01/2021 14:54

@Whattodoffs she should be ok with the Oxford. I had this conversation yesterday.

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2021 14:56

My CEV dad hasn't been invited for the vaccine yet. He's 83.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/01/2021 14:57

One DGM is having her first jab tomorrow. They sent a text out, and then you reply to that. Five local doctors have joined together and are doing them on one site. DGM can't walk very well, but apparently they're setting up a car park service for people who can come in a car but would need a wheelchair to get into the surgery.

The other DGM is in a nursing home, and they're waiting to have 'permission slips' from everybody before they vaccinate.

QueenPawPaws · 08/01/2021 15:13

My GP surgery has a recorded message saying vaccine supplies are sporadic, they have vaccinated half of their over 80 patients (so about 1500 done)

iwanttobeonabeach · 08/01/2021 15:18

DM in Devon having hers next week- got the letter/ text yesterday. She’s 80. DF is 78 and not heard yet. A few of their friend nearby had theirs before Xmas but not many. Seems to all be ramping up next week.

annevonkleve · 08/01/2021 15:37

Interesting, my DM is in Devon and has heard nothing. Her GP practice is utterly useless though.

Apparently when she was having a small eye op yesterday she asked if she could have it while she was there - they had to explain it didn't quite work like that ;)

ragged · 08/01/2021 15:49

Starts next week in my area, has been on local Facebook noticeboard. I assume will take until end of month to get thru the 80+s.

Lurkingforawhile · 08/01/2021 15:59

My mum is having hers now. She was offered yesterday so late notice but assume they are using up open batches. It's the Pfizer one, she had a phone call from the GP and was thrilled. My GP is doing them yet, but will be from next week and joining up with the other big surgery here. So I don't think anyone our side of town will have had theirs yet. Very geographically variable.

Mittens030869 · 08/01/2021 16:29

My DM hasn't yet, she's 81. She's also very prone to bronchitis, so I hope her wait won't be too long. My MIL (80) is having hers on Sunday, however.

JumboShiitake · 08/01/2021 16:30

Interesting how much it varies from area to area, in terms of where it's being done, how patients are being contacted etc.

I wonder if areas that are ahead will be allowed supply to move onto their next group before other areas have finished their over 80s?

No. Parents both over 80 and both with varying degrees of underlying health issues. We're in west/mid Wales and as far as I'm aware, the only vaccinating has been done at a single hub at the very south of the county which would mean a good 3-4 hour round trip. Centres are being opened nearer home so I'm hoping they'll get called once that's up and running.

Stirmecrazy · 08/01/2021 16:50

neither my mother (north east) or mother and father in law (midlands) have been vaccinated yet. Bit annoyed as some of my mother’s neighbours have had or are having their second vaccination in the next few days (different surgery’s) which I thought had been suspended to ensure the most vulnerable had at least one injection first.

I know someone who works in a GP surgery (not in the area I live) and this weekend they’ll have completed vaccinating the over 80s and are now moving onto the next group and making appointments for the 76-79 year olds.
thegreylady · 14/01/2021 16:32

We are in Shropshire and dh (84) hasn’t had an appointment yet. We spend our days waiting for the phone. He is deaf so I can’t leave him as he would miss a call. I even take the phone to the lavatory with me!

candycane222 · 14/01/2021 16:41

greylady, I would get a mobile phone number for him registered with the surgery - the will then text first I think, and you just need to reply to the text. This is how it worked at my mums surgery anyway.
