Did all this stem from a bat

Just that really. Did all this really stem from someone eating a bat in China

We don’t know. The bat is just one theory because bats are known to be reservoirs of infection.

dingoesatemybaby · 06/01/2021 13:59

I think that's a very simplified and un-scientific explanation but the evidence suggests it originated in a species of animal (bat or pangolin most likely) and mutated to become zoonotic and started infecting humans via the animals kept at Chinese wet markets. It's not as simple as 'someone ate a bat'.

Azerothi · 06/01/2021 14:04

As much as I know people don't agree with me, I don't think we. as humans, were meant to eat live animals and it started like that really. Eating live bats and pangolins in China.

amicissimma · 06/01/2021 14:05

There's also a theory that it may have come from a pangolin.

And another that it came from the labs in Wuhan, which had previously published articles about the research they were doing on coronaviruses and there had been reports from observers that their biosecurity was not all it could have been. The Americans observed an unusual level of activity at the local hospital in October.

We'll probably never know.

Interesting that China has refused entry to the WHO investigation team.

Bluntness100 · 06/01/2021 14:07

No one knows. There is even evidence now it was in italy before it was in China.

A bit like our Kent strain, did it start in Kent or did we just find it first.

Yes, I find it interesting that China have stopped WHO from entering and carrying out their research on the origins of this disease.

But if you meant "such a huge result from one small action" then I get that. Like something I saw where a guy pressed one small button and 4 huge buildings were demolished.

Or like every Time Travel movie where they say that if you change one small thing then everything changes. This was our butterfly.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/01/2021 14:08

None of this comes from bats or pangolins

It comes from US. Humans are massive greedy arseholes encroaching on natural habitats - sucking every piece of monetary value out of it.

We will kill all the polar bears, burn all the koalas, melt all the water.

And eventually be killed off by something we could have prevented if we weren't such massive cunts.

EllaBob · 06/01/2021 14:13

Azerothi - I’m not sure the bat would have been alive in the soup...

Ozzy Osbourne potentially has a lot to answer for here.

safariboot · 06/01/2021 14:15

Nobody ate a live animal.

Covid-19's jump from an animal to people has less to do with eating X creature per se, and more to do with crowded conditions in the market.

And it's easy for us with our wealth and privilege to say people shouldn't eat random animals and shouldn't have live animal markets. In much of the world most people have to eat whatever they can get. And to transport meat and keep it fresh without costly refrigeration equipment, the best way is to keep the animal alive.

It's in impoverished urban environments that the conditions ideal for diseases to arise and spread are made. Always has been.

(And no, the world cannot go 100% vegan. A healthy vegan diet is a luxury unavailable for most of the world.)

LobotheBotanist · 06/01/2021 14:15

Come on

The biggest biological weapons lab in China is in Wuhan

They are studying multiple inter-species viruses there. Many bat-human viruses were/are being developed there, and studied.

Access to the lab by WHO has been denied

This is not a conspiracy theory, but a fact. But it gets lost in the sea of conspiracy theories

The virus probably cane from that lab, but we can’t know if it was deliberate or an accident (human error)

We're omnivores so biologically we are meant to eat animals (and they are all live until we kill them)

Or did you mean Jesus didn't mean us too as if so I will point out that he he ate fish

I recommend this book by David Quammen. I read it about 3 years ago and
It's a really interesting read that manages to convey the science without being too sciency 😆

Biological weapons lab leaked coronavirus, claims US official

There is now strong evidence that the coronavirus was leaked from a Chinese biological weapons research laboratory, rather than developing in a livestock “wet market”, a senior US official said.

Matthew Pottinger, a deputy national security adviser, claimed in a Zoom call to politicians around the world that there was “a growing body of evidence that the lab is likely the most credible source of the virus”.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/01/2021 14:20

What laurie said.

If we as humans continue to destroy the planet, force animals into smaller places than they have ever been before, cause animals that would never meet in the wild to breed or eat eachother to spread disease in ways that would never have ever happened before we interfered them then we only have ourselves to blame really.

If it wasn't covid it would be something else and I think the rest of the world is secretly pleased we can all blame china now as it means thT this time it wasn't their country.

We did this.

"The biggest biological weapons lab in China is in Wuhan" that line of 'reasoning proves that we created Mad Cow Disease in Porton Down.

Someone is spending too much time on Youtube.

skidadle · 06/01/2021 14:21

Yes I agree about the leaking of the virus from a Chinese lab. But... was it intentional or not?? Who knows!

I wonder what it'll take for us to learn 🤷‍♀️

I don't think anyone is suggesting it is the fault of the bat or the pangolin, just that those are the species the virus likely jumped to humans from.

No one ate a live animal lol!

The animals are just stored live in horrendous conditions in close proximity to humans. That's how diseases can spread at wet markets from animals to humans.

Tbf though I understand it can be any situation where animals are in close contact with humans such as farming.

Heartlantern2 · 06/01/2021 14:31

Came from a lab I believe, although my good nature says it was accidental human nature, rather than intentional.

TheGreatWave · 06/01/2021 14:40

I think it takes much more suspension of belief that it came from a wet market than as an accidental exposure/release from a lab that studies such viruses.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 06/01/2021 14:43

I do think it’s wrong that China won’t let the Who in. It does make them look like they have something to hide
