Exercise is now once a day by law?

I’m confused. I thought Boris said it was unlimited. It definitely says once a day in the new lockdown guidance:

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. You should maintain social distancing. See exercising and meeting other people.

Well it's once a day but with no maximum time, you could go on a long run (in a circular manner so you don't leave your local area)

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/01/2021 07:10

Should be... not has to be

DurhamDurham · 05/01/2021 07:11

Missed the Grinoff my last post, I wouldn't really be running in circles

Lemons1571 · 05/01/2021 07:11

Oh so it’s not part of the law, only guidance?

turnitonagain · 05/01/2021 07:12

It’s unlimited if you’re inside your home!

KitKatastrophe · 05/01/2021 07:13

Guidance, not law. And absolutely unenforceable.

MirandaWest · 05/01/2021 07:13

I think outdoor exercise is unlimited in Scotland.

Meredithgrey1 · 05/01/2021 07:14

If you look at the wording it says should, rather than must. So it’s not the law (same for staying local when you exercise) it’s the guidance.

JacobReesMogadishu · 05/01/2021 07:14

Didn’t Boris say he was going to get some of this stuff made law, so will be interesting to see what the actual legislation is.

I’ve decided my daily dog walk isn’t exercise....it’s animal welfare reasons. My daily bike ride is my exercise.

SimonJT · 05/01/2021 07:15

Should means advised but not compulsory.

I have a dog, no matter how much I read the guidance to him he will still need to go to the toilet once a day.

JacobReesMogadishu · 05/01/2021 07:16

And local area hasn’t been defined so is open to interpretation and therefore unlikely to be enforceable.

VladimirCutiePutiPie · 05/01/2021 07:17

Dogs are exempt from once a day rule- the guidelines about animal welfare state you can walk them when you need to.

Bedsheets4knickers · 05/01/2021 07:18

Another stupid question , sorry I work nights and missed a lot of info . Can I walk with another person from a different household?

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2021 07:18

It’s guidance. Living rurally, this is one thing I’m going to be ignoring.

ineedaholidaynow · 05/01/2021 07:19

Isn’t it going to become law on Wednesday after Parliament is recalled

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2021 07:19

Can I walk with another person from a different household?

Yes-it is clear that meeting has to be for exercise this time around.

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2021 07:20

Not all elements of the guidance will become legally enforceable.
Sunflowergirl1 · 05/01/2021 07:21

We are back to the misinformation there was before. Some restrictions they won't put to parliament as they know their own MPs will rebel and they will be dependent on Labour so they use the word should instead. The problem is the local police didn't realise the difference!

Our local council started issuing guidance as they were so sick of the misinformation and listed what was law, v what was guidance which helps

trappedsincesundaymorn · 05/01/2021 07:29

Not sure how it can be made into law as it would be impossible to enforce.

Charlie63849 · 05/01/2021 07:33

Same. If I want to go for a walk more then once a day I will.
Grooticle · 05/01/2021 07:36

It’s guidance, and you should use cautious common sense to interpret it.

So ....live on a busy high street, right next to a supermarket with long queues and narrow pavements? You’re going to be close to lots and lots of people whenever you leave the house, so maybe don’t do it much.

Live on a remote farm where you never see another human? Go walking as much as you want, it makes no difference.

A lot of things just can’t be enforced, it’s down to us all to be sensible!

MaryLeeOnHigh · 05/01/2021 07:54

There's not much point speculating about whether it's law or guidance till the regulations come out. That will sort it out once and for all.

SuitedandBooted · 05/01/2021 07:56

I will be walking 3 times a day same as last time (rural). It will be impossible to enforce the "once a day" thing anyway, even if it does become Law.

I expect the people who get all their info via Facebook will be along soon to disagree though. The number of "It's an hour a day!" lot last time was quite something, and shows how few people actually listened to/read the actual Government regulations. That said, I was shocked to see that repeated on a BBC website yesterday. It was originally an off the cuff remark from Gove, - not a definite rule!

cyclingmad · 05/01/2021 07:57

Just use your commkn sense fgs. If you don't want to catch it then limit your exposure by limiting how often your around other people

MarinPrime · 05/01/2021 07:57

People have to use common sense as the restrictions can't be spelt out in minute detail to suit everyone's individual circumstances.
