Exercise is now once a day by law?

I’m confused. I thought Boris said it was unlimited. It definitely says once a day in the new lockdown guidance:

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. You should maintain social distancing. See exercising and meeting other people.

However the population is normally more interested in donuts and booze

Are you entirely basing your views on Homer Simpson?

Even if that’s true, exercising more is a good thing. Who cares why they’re doing it?

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 10:37

Maybe it's reverse psychology. Making people believe that they are only allowed one hour of out of the house exercise a day. All the people that weren't fussed previously all of a sudden wanting more than that. Clever.

FindHungrySamurai · 05/01/2021 10:38

@Hrpuffnstuff1

Why does everyone suddenly turn into a fitness guru in lockdown.

90% of the time people aren't bothered.

Also a lot of people normally get a fair amount of light exercise from their commute/school runs. According to my phone I clocked up an average 10,000 steps a day every year from 2015 to 2019 without making any deliberate effort at all.

Nowadays I need to head out of the house and label it “exercise” in order to get past 3,000.

No, not at all. Statistics clearly say 75% are obese or over weight. Donuts and booze was a euphemism.

We go into lockdown, and people suddenly claim they wish to go out and exercise. Whatever the government says, people come up with a personal caveat with which to excuse non compliance.

SlothMama · 05/01/2021 10:59

Why restrict people, they should encourage us to get out get some exercise and vitamin D!

I have three dogs with various exercise needs I will have to leave my house more than once a day to exercise them.

Apollo3 · 05/01/2021 11:01

I see the STAY AT HOME message is really getting through to people Hmm

MrsDThomas · 05/01/2021 11:02

Oh just go out and do it!

Exercise is really important and a permitted reason to go out. There is a natural limit to how much people can be outdoors exercising anyway. They don’t really need to say once a day.
ClaudiaWankleman · 05/01/2021 11:09

Almost 50% of people have at one point made their resolution to do more exercise and lose weight. Add to that the people who normally do sport/ exercise (a sizeable number, just look at the running board on MN at this time of year) and the number of people with pets that need walking.

It doesn't really seem unlikely that you'll see a huge number of people wanting to get out and about.

Plus, you weren't actually talking about non-compliance. You made the point that people shouldn't leave the house at all for exercise as they probably weren't bothered about it before Covid. Don't change the goal posts. Going out to exercise isn't non-compliance with anything except your own made up rules.

GhostPepperTears · 05/01/2021 11:26

TBH, as someone who is out walking the dog twice a day in all years and all weathers - there was only really a visible uptick in people exercising in the summer, when the weather was also nice.

Not that different to normal in the dark and dreary days of winter.

Sayitasitis2020 · 05/01/2021 11:26

Sad, dumb country, when the government finally acknowledges that hospitals won't cope and people's reaction is "how can I bend the rules to be out as much as possible".
Try not to have an accident while out. Just heard from a neighbour that they had to wait 3h for an ambulance and the lady ended up dying.

InsanityRocks · 05/01/2021 11:41

Also, particularly at this time of the year, we all need to watch our vitamin D - getting outside for an hour or two a day is even more essential

It is very important to get outside if possible, but you can't access vitamin d in the UK between October and March. The sun has to be elevated 35 degrees or more. Please use supplements.

PeoplePleaser57 · 05/01/2021 11:47

@Oreservoir

Fgs. In France we weren’t allowed to exercise, including walking the dog, further than 1 km from home and had to carry a form with the time we set out on it. Just don’t go out unless you need to.
That's OK if you can walk out of your front door in relative safety. I'm shielding (and I have more than one health issue that I need shielding for - so if it was possible I am shielding x 4). If I walk out of my front door I will be surrounded by people, if however, I get into my car and drive 2 miles down the road I can walk in country lanes and see barely a soul - and that is what I will be doing because at least one of my health issues means I need to keep moving.

PLEASE everyone check you are safe to take Vitamin D supplements, I have hyperparathyroid disease making vitamin D dangerous for me

No I did not make the point that people should not go out at all.

I merely pointed out that people suddenly begin to :
A. Come up with reasons to subvert the guidance, rules etc.
B. Exercise.

On a personal note I exercise regularly and have done since I was born.
Sub 40 min 10k
Double bodyweight squats.
Never eat takeaways.
All meals are made form scratch, very little processed foods.
First lockdown I bought a spin bike and went on that for an hr a day using the GCN training video's.

GhostPepperTears · 05/01/2021 11:53

I can imagine how a thread about exercise might tend to attract mostly people who exercise regularly - making the % of respondents on the thread talking about wanting to exercise look higher than the national % of people who do so regularly.

I now have an image of a smug faced newborn on an exercise bike Grin

EeeehElsie · 05/01/2021 12:14

As I just posted on another thread, I have mobility issues which mean I can't walk for long distances sometimes. In order to get any kind of exercise I need to have two or three separate short walks on the days I can't do more. I usually have one very early (before 7am, when the streets are empty), another mid afternoon then sometimes a last one in the evening. If I need shopping one of those will cover that, too. Altogether I might be out for an hour, an hour and a half. Surely splitting it into three parts isn't going to increase any risk - anyone who says an hour once a day is fine, but not in increments, is somehow rule breaking has lost the plot completely.

I'm not going to stop doing this - with my condition (rheumatoid arthritis) lack of movement can be as detrimental as too much, but it needs to be gentle. I have no outside space at home and exercising indoors isn't really possible in a tiny flat with DH wfh.

FindHungrySamurai · 05/01/2021 12:14

The benefits of outdoor exercise on heart health, eyesight development, mood and melatonin production cannot be reproduced by doing an at home peloton class and popping Vitamin D pills.

I agree, however it is an alternative. Eye sight development, what the chuff. My eyes stopped developing at the age of 9 and have been going backwards ever since. National health glasses and the subsequent bullying have scared me for life. Grin
Hrpuffnstuff1 · 05/01/2021 12:59

Scarred not scared...Wink

FindHungrySamurai · 05/01/2021 12:59

Eyesight development probably applies to young children only, yes. But it’s a real concern for so many children to spend so much more time indoors.

southeastdweller · 05/01/2021 13:05

What a fucking stupid rule and I certainly won’t be abiding by it. But, like most of these draconian shite, it means fuck all because it’s unenforceable.
