Exercise is now once a day by law?

I’m confused. I thought Boris said it was unlimited. It definitely says once a day in the new lockdown guidance:

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. You should maintain social distancing. See exercising and meeting other people.

My lunchtime walk/run is my daily exercise (in DHs lunch break, when he is at home)
Walking the children (or supervising bikes/scooters) is their exercise. I'm just the carer...
Yesterday, while doing this, we saw one other person on foot. And 3 or4 cars. As this a working Army base, this pattern may continue, or it could become chocablock again, in which case we will alter the direction of exercise.

Have we dropped into a time loop?

Can we just skip all the pearl clutching and literal shaking because runners are killing everyone by breathing through their mouths?

Give it a few hours - the MN invented "roolz" are already starting to appear. By about 10am we'll be back to crisps on a park bench constituting a picnic and being unable to stand still and pick up a dog turd as you must remain in motion the full time you are out of a house or it no longer becomes exercise.
QualityRoads · 05/01/2021 08:31

If you try and avoid places where other people go it won't matter whether you go out once or twice. I'd say try and follow the spirit of the law/guidance rather than the letter. The idea is to reduce your contact with others to an absolute minimum. This is harsh, but it's all we can do to improve the numbers atm.

RedskyAtnight · 05/01/2021 08:31

The issue with exercise is not so much the length and the frequency, but where you do it.

Remote field with not a soul in sight - exercise all day. if you want.

busy park - if everyone restricted the amount/number of time(s) they spend there, then the park is less busy and everyone is that bit safer.

Going out once a day in areas where you see some people who you may go nearer than 2m to is less risky than going out multiple times a day in the same area.

As proved by pandemic behaviour so far, people (at population level) are shockingly bad at common sense, therefore the rules have to sink to the lowest common denominator.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 05/01/2021 08:36

DH goes for very long walks, runs and cycle rides so fortunately these can continue, he is often out for the whole day. I don't have this love of exercise, especially in the winter so won't be joining him.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 08:36

If anyone wants my exercise allowance just say. Grin I don't want it.

Oreservoir · 05/01/2021 08:39

Fgs. In France we weren’t allowed to exercise, including walking the dog, further than 1 km from home and had to carry a form with the time we set out on it.
Just don’t go out unless you need to.

RaspberryCoulis · 05/01/2021 08:39

@cyclingmad

Just use your commkn sense fgs. If you don't want to catch it then limit your exposure by limiting how often your around other people
Agree. I know that when I go out for a walk I see very few people so I shall continue to go as often as I wish.

Problem is, there are many people on MN who seem totally incapable of interpreting guidance or making decisions. Can I do this, should I do that, is it OK if I... these people want a comprehensive list of dos and don'ts, with the government telling them exactly what they can do, complete with time limits or distance limits.

Remmy123 · 05/01/2021 08:40

'The law' who is monitoring this. Today I'm going for two walks with my son.

Sarahandco · 05/01/2021 08:41

Well, it is unfair to make people exercise more than once a day.

PimlicoJo · 05/01/2021 08:41

And now finally it really feels like Groundhog Day. I cannot believe this debate has come up again.

The wording is clear. It's once a day. If you feel that your particular circumstances due to location etc mean you are doing something else then use your judgement and do what works for you. Quietly. No need to come onto social media and tell everyone why you're different. Just use your common sense.

And? Not something we want to aspire to, is it?

Couldn't agree more, they seem to want a tailor-made list specifically for them and their exacting lifestyle requirements.. They couldn't possibly check the .Gov website or use some common sense. Hmm

And your government being totalitarian nutters is relevant how to this thread? It's just so boring, the point is we need to get the vaccine out not be chained to our beds.

OP it says 'should' so use common sense. It's largely to stop city parks and the like getting crowded and in more rural areas the mud is crazy right now so it won't be as easy to find places to go as the spring.

MandosHatHair · 05/01/2021 08:48

I'm going to carry on running, I can't afford to put any more weight on. I wont be choosing between taking the DCs out or exercise for myself when the risks are so minimal.

Many people don't have common sense. And a lot of them seem to come to our rural village in Lancashire for a walk , On Jan 2nd the local national trust car park was completely full, with round 15 cars parked on the road outside it. People milling about in the village co-op as well, not local, but popped in to get a drink or snack etc.

Of course that was all 'allowed' despite us being Tier 4 then.

Maybe we do need a system like France or Spain - their numbers now are below 12,000 new cases a day, as opposed to our 59,000 cases a day Confused after a week of Tier 4

movingonup20 · 05/01/2021 08:53

Nobody is monitoring you, nobody is checking numberplates - do what you can to restrict your interactions with others, keep your distance if you have to, only travel away from your local area if needed and you are fine.

This. I bet people will be giving me even more nasty glares as I dare to run (or even walk quickly) past them (even though there's two of them and they're not single file).

Thank goodness for Zwift. I can cycle in the garage and nobody will get in my way. I am going out for a run with a friend this evening though.

MrsGlitterSparklesHun · 05/01/2021 08:57

Number plates have been checked where I live several times and fines issued for people who were out of the area.....number plates were even checked at a supermarket

And that was more effective than our March-May lockdown in what way(s)?

No it hasn't. As I've said on here ad nauseum I don't have a local number plate to where I live - in Germany you have to get a local numberplate within a year of moving house - that is not the case here.

Even if the police have time and inclination to dig into the DVLA database, cars are registered to a keeper, not the same as a driver. Some keepers don't even have a driving licence.

Will people please stop with this myth.

sociallydistained · 05/01/2021 09:00

Who actually gives a shit now? If you're going outside on your own and going for a walk what seriously is your risk of transmission. Don't get hung up on this.

I'm a nanny and will be taking my charges out and then going out myself in the evening. Am I breaking the law? I couldn't care either way!

annevonkleve · 05/01/2021 09:00

How is me going out for a second walk where I see nobody at all putting anyone at risk?
